00:45 - Though crocodiles are famous for being able
00:47 to take down large prey such as wildebeest,
00:50 the elephant is much too big for them.
00:52 In a terrestrial fight,
01:01 the crocodile is obviously no match.
01:04 In the crocodile's favored environment,
01:13 it is still not strong enough to defeat the elephant.
01:16 Normally, an encounter would result
01:26 in both parties walking or swimming away.

01:41 The leopard, Panthera partus,
02:00 is one of five extant species in the Panthera genus,
02:04 which belongs to the Felidae family.
02:06 (dramatic music)
02:09 The leopard has short legs, a long body,
02:15 and a wide skull as compared to other wild cats.
02:18 Rosettes adorn the animal's fur.
02:34 It resembles the jaguar in appearance,
02:36 but it is smaller and lighter,
02:38 and its rosettes are smaller,
02:40 more closely packed, and lack central spots.
03:03 Its well-camouflaged fur, opportunistic hunting behavior,
03:07 diverse diet, strength, and ability to adapt
03:10 to a variety of environments ranging from rainforest
03:13 to steppe, including arid and montane areas,
03:17 distinguish the leopard.
03:18 It can travel at a top speed of 58 kilometers per hour.
03:24 The physical characteristics of a crocodile
03:30 allow it to be a good predator.
03:32 (dramatic music)
03:35 Its external morphology reflects
03:40 its predatory and aquatic lifestyle.
03:42 It can swim quickly due to its streamlined body.
03:47 It also tucks its feet to the side while swimming,
03:55 making it faster by decreasing water resistance.

04:52 Crocodiles have webbed feet which,
04:54 though not used to propel them through the water,
04:57 allow them to make fast turns and sudden moves
05:00 in the water or initiate swimming.
05:02 Webbed feet are an advantage in shallow water
05:11 where the animals sometimes move around by walking.
05:20 Crocodiles have a palatal flap,
05:23 a rigid tissue at the back of the mouth
05:25 that blocks the entry of water.
05:27 The palate has a special path from the nostril
05:36 to the glottis that bypasses the mouth.
05:38 The nostrils are closed during submergence.
05:50 A leopard can kill a crocodile,
05:53 sometimes, if he gets lucky.
05:55 Leopards have a very powerful bite,
06:06 and if they get lucky then yes, easy kill,
06:09 since their bite pushes their teeth
06:10 straight into the crocodile's brain and it's all over.

06:29 Wildebeest are herd animals.
06:43 Herd animals band together for safety in numbers.
06:47 It is harder for a predator to pick a single target
06:59 out of a jumbled mass of bodies.
07:01 (sad music)
07:04 But if one does get caught,
07:27 often the very young or old or a sick animal,
07:30 the herd functions best by fleeing together.
07:33 That means not stopping to try to rescue their companion.
07:45 They are just not equipped to do that.
07:47 Once in a while, we might see a mother fight
07:57 to defend her offspring.
07:59 (dramatic music)
08:02 But for the most part,
08:07 they have evolved to survive by fleeing as a group
08:10 and leaving the weakest members to satiate the predators
08:13 helps the rest of them to survive better.

08:22 Crocodiles are the biggest predators of wildebeest.
08:42 More wildebeest are killed by crocodiles
08:45 than any other predator.
08:48 This is because a stampede is more deadly
08:51 and likely to occur in crocodile infested waters
08:54 than on land.
08:55 Poachers and hunters kill the wildebeest
09:12 for their meat and for trophies.

09:16,
09:45 In the water, the crocodile wins almost all the fights
09:48 with lion because the crocodile is built for swimming
09:51 over a long period of time
09:53 and can hold its breath underwater
09:55 so it can go underwater, swim under the lion
09:58 and bite at the lion's underside,
10:00 possibly ripping its stomach open.
10:02 Near the riverbank, the crocodile wins 80% of the time
10:12 because if it gets the lion in its jaws,
10:14 it can drag it into the water and either drown it
10:17 or give it the infamous death roll
10:19 where it rips chunks off its prey,
10:21 causing it to bleed to death.
10:23 Or if the lion somehow starts to get the upper hand,
10:31 it can retreat into the water and either flee
10:34 or wait until the lion's guard is lowered
10:36 and charge back out and deliver the killing bite.
