00:18 Good evening. Welcome to the press conference for Carlos Alcaraz, Wimbledon champion.
00:23 How does it feel, Carlos, to be the Wimbledon champion?
00:26 Well, it feels great. It's a dream come true for me, being a Wimbledon champion, something that I really wanted.
00:37 Honestly, I didn't expect to get it really soon.
00:42 It's a time to enjoy and to share everything, all my feelings. It's a dream.
00:57 Elena.
00:58 Hi, Carlos. Elena Critchin, Press Association.
01:01 A lot of people have talked about a changing of the generations, like a changing of the card.
01:07 How important was it for you to beat Novak at his best on a stage like this?
01:14 Well, I did it for myself, not for the changing of the generations, honestly.
01:21 But it was great beating Novak at his best in this stage, making history,
01:34 being the guy to beat him after 10 years and beating on that court is amazing for me.
01:42 It's something that I will never forget, that's for sure.
01:46 But it's great, I think, for the new generation as well to see me beating him
01:59 and making them think that they are capable of doing it as well.
02:08 So it's great for me and I think for the young players as well.
02:13 Carlos, congratulations. What is it that you changed early in the second set or that changed for you?
02:24 You were really struggling for the first 40 minutes of the match.
02:29 What happened that allowed you to fight and get even and be playing on an even court?
02:39 Well, it was tough, first, honestly. But I thought that they were playing great.
02:45 They were playing at a good level.
02:48 I had chances to break his serve. I was close to breaking his serve.
02:54 I couldn't take it. It's a problem when you don't take the opportunities against a legend like Novak.
03:07 You have to struggle with it.
03:11 But in the second set, I knew that I was going to have my chances.
03:16 I had to be focused. I had to stay there and wait for my chance to be up or to be close on the score.
03:31 After winning the second set, it was really good for me.
03:35 Because if I would have lost that set, probably I couldn't have won the trophy.
03:41 I probably could have lost in three sets, in strike sets.
03:47 I would say that gave me a lot of confidence and a lot of motivation to still go in and to think that I'm able to win Novak in that stage.
04:00 Going back to the French Open and the cramps that you suffered in that match,
04:07 just the feelings that you had after that semi-final,
04:11 what steps did you take to ensure that you would be able to go, as you did today, five sets strong with Novak?
04:20 Was there any sort of change in your approach, recovery, anything like that, to just make sure that you would remain on form?
04:26 In terms of your recovery, to go five sets and to be going toe-to-toe with Novak today,
04:33 I know you wanted to do that at Roland-Garros. It wasn't possible the way the day went.
04:38 What allowed you to do that today?
04:40 As I said before, I am a totally different player than French Open.
04:51 I grew up a lot since that moment. I learned a lot from that moment.
04:55 As I said before the final, I took lessons from that match.
05:04 I did something different before the match. I prepared a little bit differently mentally before the match.
05:11 I could deal with the pressure, the nerves, better than I did in French Open.
05:21 Obviously, on grass it's different than on clay.
05:25 I'm really happy to be able to stay there. I didn't get down. I didn't give up.
05:36 I fought until the last ball. Every ball. I think we made great rallies, great points.
05:46 It was a long match, a long set. I think it was the mental part that allowed me to stay there during the five sets.
06:00 Congratulations Carlos. I wanted to ask you, before the final you said that this was the biggest moment of your life.
06:11 For Novak it was just another match possibly.
06:15 I want to ask you, why was it the biggest moment in your life? You're just 20.
06:20 There are going to be many, many Grand Slam finals. Why was this such an important moment for you?
06:27 Right now, it's the happiest moment of my life, that's for sure.
06:32 Probably in five years it will change.
06:36 Right now I'm 20. I didn't live too many situations like this.
06:42 I'm going to enjoy this moment. Making history that I did today, it's the happiest moment of my life.
06:54 I think it's not going to change for a long time.
06:58 It's beating Novak, winning a women's long championship, is something that I dream about since I started playing tennis.
07:11 That's why it's the biggest moment of my life.
07:14 Carlos, you said just then that you're going to enjoy this. What's the plan tonight? Any wild plans, parties planned?
07:24 I have the official dinner, like every year.
07:33 And then, I don't know. I'm going to spend time with my family, that's for sure. But I don't know where.
07:41 Novak was asked to describe what he thinks your best qualities are.
07:50 He said you've got a little bit of him, a little bit of Roger Federer and a little bit of Rafael Nadal.
07:59 I wanted to ask what your reaction is to that. I think you just gave us a little bit.
08:04 But also, how would you describe yourself as a player? What do you think your best qualities are?
08:11 It's crazy that Novak said that, honestly. I consider myself a really complete player.
08:21 I think I have the shots, I have the strength physically, strength mentally enough to handle these situations.
08:33 I don't know. Probably he's right. But I don't want to think about it.
08:43 I want to think that I'm a full Carlos Alcaraz, let's say. But probably I have some great ability from every player.
08:57 What did you learn about yourself today?
09:03 That's a good question. I don't know. I probably know that I'm really incapable of doing the things that I did today.
09:17 Probably before this match I thought that I wasn't ready to beat Djokovic in five sets in an epic match like this.
09:29 I stayed good physically or good mentally for about five hours against a legend.
09:38 Probably that's what I learned about myself today.
09:45 Did you change something in the way you considered Novak Djokovic before this match?
09:51 After Roland-Garros semi-final you said, "Of course I was nervous because it was Novak, because it was him."
09:57 Just like if he was superior to you. Did you change something in that point today?
10:02 Yes. Before this match I thought that I can beat Novak. That's obvious.
10:18 After this epic match, I think I'm different about Novak in the way that probably in other tournaments, in other Grand Slams, I will remember this moment.
10:36 I will think that I'm ready to play five sets against him. Good rallies, good sets, really long match.
10:47 I stayed there physically, mentally and in tennis in general.
10:54 Probably it changed my mind a bit after this match.
11:03 We saw you go up to your box to celebrate with your family. Your family obviously love tennis as much as you do.
11:09 You've spoken about your dad. Can you just describe what that moment felt like to give them that experience of you becoming the Wimbledon champion?
11:16 Because it was quite emotional to watch you.
11:18 Yes, it's a big moment not just for me but for my family, for all the people around me.
11:27 It's a really special moment. I started playing tennis thanks to my dad. He's a huge fan of tennis.
11:36 He was watching tennis before he was born. It's crazy. His whole life is about tennis.
11:51 For them, watching his kid making history, lifting the trophy here in Wimbledon is something incredible for them.
12:05 For me to have them there and giving them a big hug is something that I will never forget.
12:17 I hope to have a photo from that moment because I'm going to keep it forever.
12:25 forever.
