Throughout history, being gay has always been fraught with challenges and adversity. The 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s were marked by an increasing backlash against those who openly identified as gay, leading the LGBTQ+ community to adopt a more secretive approach. In 1978, a significant event took place in California when a proposed initiative aimed to prohibit gay teachers from working in public schools. Harvey Milk, a courageous openly gay public official, emerged as a prominent advocate and urged individuals to embrace their true selves, famously declaring, "Come Out, Come Out, Wherever You Are." Milk's efforts proved successful as the bill ultimately failed to pass. Fast forward 45 years, and today we commemorate National Coming Out Day every October 11th, honoring the history and significance of the coming out journey. This is the history of coming out.
