00:00 Bangladesh has started to witness yet another round of disenchantment and resentment against
00:08 the ruling Sheikh Hasina's regime.
00:10 Yesterday, tens of thousands of opposition activists defied the scorching sun to march
00:15 in capital Dhaka and other cities calling for Hasina's resignation.
00:19 At least one opposition activist has died and hundreds of others have been injured in
00:24 clashes across Bangladesh as tens of thousands demanded Prime Minister Hasina's removal ahead
00:29 of elections expected in January.
00:32 The opposition and rights groups have criticised the Hasina government for cracking down on
00:36 anti-government protests.
00:38 In Dhaka, activists and supporters from different parts of the city joined the march that stretched
00:43 for nearly 13 kilometres, bringing traffic at different points to a standstill for hours
00:48 on a busy weekday.
00:51 The opposition, Bangladesh Nationalist Party, led by former Prime Minister Khalid Azia and
00:56 dozens of smaller allies have called for protests throughout the country to demand Hasina's
01:00 step down and the polls take place under a neutral caretaker government.
01:05 The opposition parties have alleged that Sheikh Hasina's government has been fast-tracking
01:09 pending police cases against some of the opposition leaders to prevent them from running in next
01:14 year's elections that will take place in January.
01:17 Several members of the opposition camp have been facing charges of arson, violent attacks
01:21 on police, various subversive activities and other serious crimes since 2013.
01:27 The members of the opposition claim that the police officers have been allegedly instructed
01:31 to maintain good rapport with public prosecutors and judges to ensure quicker trials and the
01:36 disposition of such criminal cases.
01:39 Last December 2, the country had erupted in violent protests.
01:42 A lot of factors had combined together back then to aggravate the situation.
01:46 Dhaka had witnessed huge protests after a massive hike of 51 per cent in essential fuels
01:51 was declared in August 2022 that had made its citizens livid.
01:56 That massive hike was the biggest hike in prices of fuel since Bangladesh became a free
02:00 and sovereign country.
02:01 Although there were already concerns about the nation falling prey to the debt trap of
02:05 China, the impending economic crisis had made concerns even more worrisome.
02:11 Bangladesh had in fact become the third country in South Asia last year after Pakistan and
02:15 Sri Lanka to seek financial support from IMF.
02:19 Inflation rates had skyrocketed and it had increased the cost of living and had decreased
02:23 the actual income of people.
02:25 The often occurring power and energy crisis still continue and it has also exacerbated
02:30 the current situation.
02:31 Yet again, people from all walks of life have joined the demonstrations to protest against
02:36 rising food prices and to express their dismay at how the government has been handling crippling
02:41 inflation.
02:42 These renewed protests seem to be a very serious threat for Sheikh Hasina's authority.
