The Indian owner of Jaguar Land Rover has announced plans to build an electric vehicle battery plant in the UK. Tata will build one of Europe’s largest battery cell manufacturing sites and aim to have it up and running in 2026. The site of the £4 billion factory is widely reported to be in Bridgwater, Somerset. The government says the new plant will create around 4,000 jobs. The government also says they stepped in with subsidies to entice Tata to build the plant in Britain rather than elsewhere in Europe, although they have not disclosed just how much. 00:29 This is a fantastic vote of confidence
00:31 in the UK and the UK economy.
00:33 It's one of the largest ever investments in the UK auto
00:36 sector that we've seen.
00:38 It's getting us ready for the future
00:39 and the transition to electric vehicles.
00:41 It's billions of pounds of investment and thousands of jobs.
00:44 So it's great news.
00:45 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:54 We're having discussions with lots of companies,
00:56 and we're in competition with countries all over the world
00:59 for these big investments.
01:01 So obviously, those discussions are commercially sensitive.
01:04 But what you can see from today's decision
01:07 is that the industries that are going to grow the fastest
01:10 this century-- and of course, electric vehicles are one
01:13 of those sectors--
01:14 are the sectors that we are fundamentally very strong in.
01:17 And people want to invest in the UK
01:19 because we have a very skilled workforce,
01:21 we have brilliant universities, and we
01:24 have some of the most productive car plants in Europe.
01:26 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:34 This will bring skilled jobs, both directly employed
01:38 but also throughout the supply chain.
01:40 It's a big boost for car manufacturing,
01:42 particularly in this country.
01:44 It's the tip of the iceberg of what we need,
01:46 but it is very good news.
