00:00 Hubertus Heil is talking to young people who are poised to leave for Germany.
00:05 They are in their early twenties and are excited by the prospect of starting a new life.
00:12 I already registered at a university in Berlin.
00:16 Learning German is part of the preparation for their big move.
00:22 But there are cultural differences which may surprise them.
00:26 The German ambassador warns them.
00:28 When you come to Germany you will be a bit surprised by the directness of people.
00:32 Don't be discouraged by that because it doesn't mean that they are rude.
00:35 Or maybe they are rude but they are not unfriendly.
00:38 But Germany is eager to attract talent to make up for the shortfall in their workforce.
00:45 In Germany we need a skilled workforce.
00:49 And we do everything to educate people, to train people in Germany, to give them a chance.
00:55 But we need additionally a skilled workforce from abroad.
01:00 And that's why we made a modern skilled labour law.
01:04 I'm here because India is a very important partner for fair migration for Germany.
01:09 Last December Germany and India signed a treaty on migration and mobility
01:15 to promote an exchange of professionals between the two countries.
01:20 But those applying for student visas often complain about the long and tedious process.
01:26 We destroyed a lot of bureaucracy by law.
01:30 But we are working also on more digitalization to speed up the question of visa, for example.
01:38 We have to speed it up because if we win talents in the world for Germany
01:44 and they are confronted by barriers of bureaucracy it would be a bad thing.
01:50 Every year about a million people join the Indian workforce.
01:54 But many of them do not get jobs here.
01:57 Those who found a placement in Germany consider themselves extremely lucky.
02:04 I want to become aerospace engineer.
02:06 Like from the very childhood I had interest in rockets.
02:09 So that's why I decided to become an aerospace engineer.
02:12 While I feel like the education system in Germany is more practical rather than the other countries.
02:18 The quality from the education is very nice.
02:22 I want to specialize in Ayurveda as a chef.
02:25 I decided to go to Germany because it is one of the hubs for Ayurveda outside India right now.
02:30 I would love to portray my own country's culture out there.
02:33 Germany and in general Europe has a very good work-life balance.
02:37 I think that's the thing that motivated me the most compared to some countries in the west where it's a norm to work overtime.
02:45 They are pleased by the warm welcome given by the minister.
02:49 And they hope they can make it in Germany.
