00:03 Welcome back to Movie Recap.
00:05 Today I'm gonna show you a movie called, Brightburn.
00:08 It is a 2019 American superhero horror film directed by David Yurovsky and starring Elizabeth
00:13 Banks.
00:14 The movie is about a young boy of extraterrestrial origin reared on Earth who realizes he has
00:18 superpowers and begins to use them for sinister purposes.
00:22 Let's start.
00:34 We first meet Tori and Kyle Brayer as they attempt to conceive a child.
00:38 We see a number of books on shelves indicating this, though they appear to be unsuccessful.
00:43 In the middle of their latest attempt, Tori feels vibrations from something crashing outside.
00:49 At first, she brushes it off, but then a louder shake turns the lights off.
00:53 They look out the window and see something has crashed outside.
00:57 We then flash forward to a video of a child, Brandon, as he grows up.
01:02 After seeing some of these clips, Tori is playing hide and seek with a slightly grown-up
01:06 version of Brandon.
01:08 Brandon is then at school, answering a question by a teacher.
01:12 This gets the attention of a young classmate named Caitlin.
01:16 Back at the farm that night, as Tori paints, Brandon sleepwalks to the basement and finds
01:21 a meteor, the one he presumably arrived on Earth in.
01:24 He chants angrily as he attempts to get close to it.
01:27 Tori calms him down.
01:31 The next morning, Brandon sets out to mow the lawn.
01:34 Frustrated with starting the mower, he flings it a few hundred feet.
01:38 He goes over to see the blade spinning on it.
01:41 Curious, he jams his hand into it, stopping it cold without taking a scratch.
01:46 The family stops at a diner later on with Tori, Kyle, his aunt Marilee and his uncle
01:51 Noah.
01:52 When Noah attempts to give him a toy gun, Kyle chastises him.
01:55 However, Brandon demands the gun.
01:58 With that, the family leaves in the midst of their celebration, with a waitress looking
02:02 on as they depart.
02:04 The next morning, Brandon isn't even listening to Kyle.
02:08 He notices that Brandon is chewing on a fork without taking any damage to his teeth.
02:14 Kyle takes Brandon hunting, showing him his rifle and explaining how his body's changing
02:19 after Tori found some lingerie ads underneath his bed.
02:23 Later that night, Brandon is stalking Kaitlyn while listening to a slow rock tune.
02:28 She notices the music is coming from her laptop and she shuts it.
02:32 However, she's nervous that he's watching her from a nearby window.
02:36 Suddenly, her mother, the waitress from earlier, bursts in, asking what's wrong.
02:41 She begins breathing nervously.
02:45 Back at the farm, Noah and Tori are looking for Brandon.
02:48 They find him.
02:51 The next day, at school, Tori talks with Brandon's teacher as he does some mysterious drawings
02:56 in his notebook.
02:57 Tori asks about them and he closes it and walks away.
03:01 Back at the farm, Kyle notices Brandon startling some chickens.
03:05 He asks if he's alright, to which he acknowledges he is.
03:09 The two go inside.
03:10 Later on, Tori and Kyle go outside to see all the chickens have been murdered.
03:15 Tori thinks a wolf did it, but Kyle thinks it's Brandon, noting he was out there earlier.
03:21 At school the next day, Brandon and his classmates take part in a trust fall exercise.
03:26 Kaitlyn is nervous about what took place the other night, but doesn't say anything.
03:30 However, he falls to the ground after one classmate fails to catch him.
03:35 He's okay, but Kaitlyn notes that she won't help him because he's a pervert.
03:40 Brandon says it's a lie.
03:41 The coach forces her to help him up.
03:43 But he takes her hand and suddenly breaks it, sending her screaming.
03:48 He's then in the office, with Tori explaining to Kaitlyn's mother that he's sorry and accidents
03:53 happen.
03:54 The mother, however, isn't so sure.
03:57 She demands the sheriff arrest him, but he refuses.
04:00 He'll be in special sessions in school instead.
04:02 Meanwhile, Brandon just sits here, looking sad as they continue to argue.
04:07 The mother insists that a psycho gave birth to him, but Tori defends him.
04:12 The family leaves, but not before Brandon gives her a menacing stare.
04:17 Later that night, he hears Kyle and Tori talking about him.
04:20 Tori then reads up on meteors, but then notices something happening in the barn.
04:25 Brandon experiencing something glowing, possibly from the meteor.
04:29 She rushes out to check on him, only to find him levitating in the barn.
04:33 He continues to chant, "Take the world", as she approaches.
04:37 He falls and cuts his hand on part of the meteor.
04:39 She goes down to recover and talk him back down.
04:42 He freaks out and explains that he came from the sky, and he yells that she lied to him
04:47 and runs off.
04:48 She goes and tells Kyle what he discovered with the meteor.
04:52 Angry as he walks along, Brandon screams and fires lasers from his eyes.
04:57 Later, he visits Kaitlyn in her bedroom as she types with her one good hand on her laptop.
05:02 He tells her not to be scared, and that she knows just how special he is.
05:07 She says her mother said not to talk to her, but he says, "He's gonna take care of that."
05:11 She cries as he suddenly departs, leaving a flower behind for her.
05:15 Meanwhile, at the diner, her mother is just closing up shop, but she notices something
05:21 is off.
05:22 She walks out and suddenly sees diagrams on the windows, similar to that of what Brandon
05:26 drew in his book.
05:28 The lights begin flickering.
05:29 Suddenly, the windows shatter, and the mother removes a piece of glass from her eye.
05:34 She looks around and doesn't see anything, but knows someone is there.
05:38 She grabs a baseball bat, only to see a shadow figure fly by at rapid speed.
05:43 She takes a swing, but doesn't hit anything, then retreats to the cooler in the back, locking
05:48 the door.
05:49 She scrambles for safety, only for Brandon to burn through the door with his laser vision.
05:54 He tears the door off and looks menacingly at her, before he charges and presumably kills
05:58 her.
06:00 The next morning, Brandon meets back up with his parents, telling them everything is fine
06:05 with how things were explained.
06:08 Back at the diner, a sheriff and his deputy investigate what happened, including what's
06:12 left of her body.
06:13 The sheriff locates one of the diagrams on the window that Brandon drew.
06:19 Merrilee, who's also a counselor, tries to talk to Brandon, but he's despondent in terms
06:26 of explaining what's going on.
06:28 The session pretty much goes nowhere, and Merrilee considers talking to the police about
06:32 his behavior.
06:33 Later, at a bar, Kyle talks with his friends about what went down with Kaitlyn's hand,
06:39 and he starts to think his son is a monster.
06:41 Merrilee, back at home, is doing things in the bathroom as the lights flicker on and
06:46 off quickly.
06:48 Brandon shows up at Merrilee's house later on, and says he needs to talk to her.
06:52 He says not to talk to the police, as it's not good for anyone.
06:56 She tells him to go home, and he leaves supposedly.
06:59 But he later stands outside her window and watches her text Noah.
07:03 He comes back in the house in his costume, but Noah returns and finds him in the closet.
07:08 He escorts him out and threatens to tell his parents.
07:12 They start to load up on Noah's truck, and when he tries to force Brandon into it, he's
07:16 thrown up against a garage door.
07:19 He gets up and drives away in his truck, fearful, but he is convinced Brandon is following him.
07:24 Suddenly, the truck starts swerving out of control and loses power.
07:28 He attempts to restart it, but Brandon appears in front of him as he screams.
07:33 He lifts the truck off the ground, levitating it in the air, and then suddenly sending it
07:37 crashing down.
07:39 Noah viscerally breaks his jaw in the process as Brandon goes over to him.
07:43 As he lays there dying, Brandon draws out another one of his symbols in the ground in
07:47 his blood.
07:49 Brandon returns home, saying he was playing soccer the whole time.
07:53 He explains how he was bullied, and that's how he lost his shirt.
07:58 That night, Kyle has a nightmare that shows him how Tori first found the baby in the meteor
08:03 and chooses to adopt him.
08:05 However, it startles him when its eyes suddenly light up with lasers.
08:11 The phone awakens him, and Kyle and Tori are called to the hospital where Marilee is.
08:16 She explains Noah was killed, and they comfort her.
08:20 She explains that Brandon came to visit beforehand, which concerns Kyle.
08:24 The next morning, they give Brandon the news about Noah, but all he says is, "Okay."
08:29 Kyle now wonders what's up with that and accuses Brandon of being there.
08:33 Tori tries to calm him down, but he just gets angrier.
08:36 Suddenly, Brandon shoves him into the pantry, breaking the doors in the process.
08:41 Tori sends him away.
08:43 Later, Kyle finds Brandon's shirt and notices a little blood on it, but manages to take
08:48 it away without him noticing.
08:50 He apologizes for earlier, but Brandon just says, "Okay" again.
08:55 Later, Kyle explains to Tori what he found, but she refuses to accept what he's saying.
09:00 Meanwhile, the sheriff takes a close look at the accident, and notices similarities
09:04 with the diagram from the window and what was drawn on the ground.
09:09 Kyle looks through old birthday cards of Brandon's and tries to comfort Tori that night.
09:14 The next day, he opts to take Brandon on a hunting trip.
09:18 As they go, the sheriff visits Tori to explain what he's found with the photos.
09:22 She doesn't acknowledge them, but he says he'll be back.
09:26 In the woods, Brandon and Kyle follow some deer tracks, and Kyle lets him walk ahead.
09:31 Back at the house, Tori finds Brandon's notebook and notices the same diagram from the window
09:36 in the road, along with other drawings like his outfit and glass in the waitress's eye,
09:41 and several dead people along with the words, "Take the world."
09:44 She panics.
09:47 Back in the woods, Brandon investigates the tracks as Kyle attempts to shoot him.
09:51 The bullet fires, but just bounces off of Brandon's head.
09:55 He shows a startled look as Kyle attempts to reload.
09:58 Once he does, however, Brandon vanishes.
10:01 Kyle runs in a panic, but Brandon, now hooded again, flies around and appears around him.
10:07 He finally tackles him and forces him to sit up.
10:10 Kyle tries to apologize, but Brandon suddenly fires his laser eyes that shoot through his
10:15 skull, killing him.
10:18 At the house, Tori frantically tries to call Kyle, but to no avail.
10:22 Brandon finally answers, and Tori asks where Kyle is.
10:26 Brandon explains, he's gone, and that he's coming home.
10:29 He hangs up and begins flying through the house at a rapid pace, destroying it in the
10:33 process.
10:34 She calls 911 as he continues to fly around her.
10:39 The sheriff and his deputy are called in after the 911 call is cut short.
10:44 They show up to see the house is devastated from Brandon's destruction.
10:47 Tori starts to come out of the house as the sheriff calls out to her.
10:51 However, before she can talk with him, Brandon rushes him and rips him to shreds.
10:56 Panicking, Tori and the deputy make their way inside the house.
11:01 Tori goes upstairs to hide as the deputy cocks her gun, looking for Brandon.
11:05 She calls for backup.
11:07 She walks around the house and sees Brandon appear in front of her, and then suddenly
11:11 behind her.
11:12 The sounds of her being torn apart by him can be heard by Tori.
11:16 She continues to be quiet as Brandon looks around for her.
11:19 She makes her way out the window and crashes to the ground.
11:23 Tori makes her way to the barn, where the meteor is located.
11:26 She remembers earlier where Brandon was injured in his fall, and rips off a shard from the
11:31 meteor.
11:32 She finds the body of the waitress as she hides the shard and calls for Brandon.
11:36 He shows up, hooded and all, and she explains that he means everything to her.
11:40 She goes to take his hood off, and he looks at her innocently.
11:44 The two embrace, and she prepares to stab Brandon with the shard.
11:48 However, he catches her hand, forcing the shard out of it.
11:52 Angry, he flies her into the air, several hundred feet into the air.
11:56 He gives her one last look, holds her out, and drops her to her death.
12:00 As he levitates in air, an oncoming plane comes towards him.
12:05 The next day, wreckage from the plane is shown on the ground, with no survivors from the
12:09 crash.
12:10 It's reported that the plane crashed into the farmhouse, with Kyle and Tori inside.
12:15 Brandon sits there, eating a cookie with an innocent look on his face.
12:20 During the end credits, we see cities devastated and millions dying by Brandon's hands.
