In the most recent installment of the Bob Ryan and Jeff Goodman Podcast, Jeff raised a fascinating question: Is Jaylen Brown going to conclude his upcoming contract with Boston?

While Bob Ryan wasn’t as suspicious of Brown’s delayed contract extension, he argued on the Bob Ryan & Jeff Goodman NBA Podcast on CLNS Media that he does believe it speaks volumes about Brown’s position in Boston.

“[Brown’s] never expressed complete fidelity to the city, said Ryan.” “There’s this lingering issue of how good he thinks he is and whether he should be regarded as the equal of Tatum… There’s all this speculation because he only leaves you wondering.”

00:00 So I think something's afoot with Jalen Brown.
00:05 Bob, I'll start with you.
00:06 Something smells rotten in Denmark to me.
00:09 I just I'm reading the tea leaves and this is what I read.
00:12 I don't think Brad wants to pay him.
00:15 I think Jalen doesn't want to be here.
00:16 And the only way he'll be here is if he gets paid.
00:19 I think that Brad Stevens has shown that he can be cold and heartless
00:23 and all about business when he traded Marcus Smart.
00:26 Something smells with this Brown thing.
00:29 Your thoughts?
00:30 I'm not as, you know, deeply suspicious as you appear to be at all.
00:37 But I must say the one loose end in my mind
00:41 is that he's never expressed complete fidelity to the city or the cause.
00:46 He's had opportunities, I think, and people,
00:48 he's had people wondering what's he really think about being here.
00:51 And we know that, A.
00:54 B, there's this lingering issue of who how good he thinks he is
01:00 and whether he should be regarded as the equal of Tatum.
01:03 And does he want to go somewhere, you know, to, quote,
01:06 have his own show, unquote, a la Kyrie, you know, years ago?
01:09 This is all just all speculation because he's never,
01:13 you know, he's only he only leaves you wondering.
01:16 He doesn't say anything about it.
01:18 But I still think they'll get it done.
01:22 I just think they got to pay him.
01:24 I wish they didn't have to pay him to Max.
01:25 I've gone through that because that's the reason I have to pay him.
01:27 Max is a stupid reason, you know, because he made second team all week.
01:31 I mean, that's absurd.
01:32 They should never have been fortified.
01:34 But anyway, it's the reality.
01:36 And so I'm not I'm worried, but I'm not I'm not worried.
01:42 I'm anxious to get it done.
01:44 I still think it'll be done again.
01:47 I said this last week a little bit.
01:50 Is it dragging a little bit because Brad Stevens is so
01:54 smart for lack of a better word and just saying, like,
02:00 I'm not going to rush into this thing.
02:01 Who knows what the asking price is going to be for Damian Lillard in a week or two weeks.
02:06 Let me slow play this a little bit.
02:08 And who knows?
02:10 Maybe the asking price comes down enough.
02:12 You know, also, the fifth year player option is important in this one,
02:19 because otherwise you're basically given Jalen Brown control for five years.
02:23 And again, listen, guys, do we really think unless they win a title?
02:29 Do we really think there's any chance Jalen Brown is here for five more years after this year?
02:34 No, no chance.
02:35 Zero.
02:36 No, I don't even think Tatum's a long time.
02:39 If they don't win a title, you could be right.
02:44 I think he's gone.
02:47 I don't know if he's gone because he's still the guy and beloved here today.
02:53 But you're right.
02:53 If he doesn't win a title next year, does the fan base start to turn on Tatum and Brown
03:00 more than they turn on Brad Stevens?
03:04 This year is Joe Mizzoula, right?
03:06 Mizzoula was the fall guy this year for the most part.
03:09 He was the one everybody was expressing their anger at.
03:13 But I think next year it flips and it becomes whether it's Tatum or Brown or a combination
03:19 of both.
03:19 But I also think that the Mizzoula thing will linger until and unless they do win.
03:26 Yeah, they got to win in the playoffs.
03:28 I'm just saying, you know, he's a handy target.
03:31 And it's particularly my guy, you know, Houston has a turnaround year next year.
03:39 They won't.
03:40 They won't, Bob.
03:40 You don't have to worry about that.
03:41 I mean, they may turn around and win 10 more games.
03:43 But I mean, yeah, that turnaround year would be 38 and 44.
03:47 Right.
03:47 So, yeah.
03:48 I just to wrap this one up, I just have a feeling that the player doesn't really want
03:52 to be here in Brown and the Celtics don't want him at that money.
03:55 And that's just what I keep coming back to.
03:59 Now, Bob's right.
04:00 Everything Bob said is factually correct.
04:02 So it's almost like a forced marriage, you know, which I don't like.
04:06 I really don't like that.
04:09 So we'll see.
