Elegant Exterior Design, 455 Hp, Quiet and Comfortable Cab, New Volvo XC60 PHEV SUV 2024

2024 Volvo XC60
Starting at $47,645

Whether it's a nice shoe or the perfect pair of jeans, the 2024 Volvo XC60 combines practical design with handsome style to create a unique option in the luxury SUV class. The XC60 combines an elegant exterior with a luxurious interior and luxury with a Scandinavian approach. Volvo offers a choice of two four-cylinder engines for the XC60: the 247 hp B5 and the 455 hp T8 plug-in hybrid. Volvo takes corners well and feels connected to the road, even as competitors like the Porsche Macan add more athleticism to their road behavior. Technology is at the forefront of the XC60, and it works well enough, even if we don't like the Google-based infotainment system.

The 2024 Volvo XC60 leaves the front-wheel drive version of the B5 drivetrain, leaving only the all-wheel drive versions. Last year's more powerful B6 powertrain has also been discontinued. Volvo has changed some of the exterior paint colors, leaving a black one and adding a gray option instead. An air cleaner is now standard on Plus and Ultimate trims, while the Ultimate trim features laminated windows as well as a new 20-inch wheel option.

Volvo offers two different drivetrains (B5 and plug-in hybrid T8) in the XC60, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Under the hood of the B5 badged XC60s is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 48-volt hybrid system producing 247 horsepower. The plug-in hybrid T8 powertrain pairs a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a set of electric motors for a total of 455 horsepower on Recharge models. The XC60 takes corners well, feels connected to the road when cruising, and steers with confidence.

The EPA estimates that the B5 models should deliver 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

The quiet, comfortable cabin provides adult accommodation on both rows. Clean lines and high-quality materials give the XC60's cabin a distinctly Scandinavian flair, and we would expect nothing less from a modern Volvo. Reasonable cargo-handling capacity puts the XC60 ahead of the curve in our tests; 20 pieces of hand luggage with the rear seats folded down.

All XC60 models come with a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment display running Volvo's latest Google-based software interface. The system offers a variety of customization options and offers voice controls via Google Assistant. We found the software interface to be responsive, but its menus take some getting used to. A built-in Wi-Fi hotspot is standard, supported by Bluetooth connectivity and 4G LTE data connectivity, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
