00:02 Turtles,
00:04 including saltwater sea turtles,
00:08 land turtles,
00:10 and coastal brackish sea turtles
00:13 have been on this planet for a long time.
00:15 These curious animals may attribute
00:21 their long-term survival in part
00:23 to one of nature's best defense mechanisms,
00:25 hard, bony protective shells.

00:32 While their defense anatomy can protect them
00:35 from most predators,
00:36 tortoises often still fall prey
00:40 to a variety of determined predators.
00:42 While adult turtles have few predators,
00:46 turtle eggs and hatchlings are incredibly vulnerable.
00:50 Some snake species eat turtle eggs,
00:57 which are easier to capture.

01:01 Others may try their luck with an adult tortoise.
01:03 While most turtles can bite,
01:06 only a few use the bite as a defense,
01:09 and the next snake had the misfortune
01:11 to find just one of those.
01:12 These incredible images show the moment
01:17 a snake attacked a turtle
01:18 and got its head inside its shell.
01:20 The tortoise had retracted its head
01:26 to ward off the deadly snake,
01:28 causing it to fall into a trap.
01:30 Inside, the turtle bit the snake to kill it.
01:35 After a few moments of intense fighting,
01:39 the snake moves its body quickly
01:45 from side to side, trying to get away.
01:47 This took place on a reservation in the United States.
01:53 The snake managed to break free
01:57 and quickly flees, leaving the tortoise aside.
02:00 This time, the tortoise showed the snake
02:03 that it was not as easy prey as the snake imagined.
