00:10 WIL WHEATON: Hi, everyone.
00:11 I'm Wil Wheaton.
00:12 For nearly 60 years, Star Trek has shown an optimistic view
00:15 of the future, celebrating diversity, inclusion, and
00:18 hope. It has taken its place as one of the most iconic
00:22 pieces of pop culture media in history.
00:25 The newest entry into the Star Trek universe is Star Trek's
00:28 Strange New Worlds.
00:30 It's a throwback to the episodic style of
00:32 storytelling.
00:33 Strange New Worlds features the early adventures of the
00:36 Starship Enterprise and spotlights classic characters
00:39 like Captain Pike, Mr. Spock, and Lieutenant Uhura, as well
00:42 as new favorites like the ship's pilot, Erika Ortegas,
00:45 and security chief, La'An N'Nien Singh.
00:48 Today, I am thrilled to share with you a special preview of
00:52 Strange New Worlds' epic second season, which is
00:55 streaming right now on Paramount+, the
00:57 home of Star Trek.
00:59 Coming up, I sit down with Strange New Worlds stars
01:02 Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn, who play Captain
01:04 Christopher Pike and First Officer Una Chin
01:07 Riley, respectively.
01:08 We'll go behind the scenes for a sneak peek at what's in
01:11 store for season two.
01:12 And if that weren't enough, we're giving you the top five
01:14 reasons to watch Star Trek Strange New Worlds' exciting
01:18 new season.
01:19 But before all of that, to help you get ready for season
01:21 two, here's a look at everything that went down in
01:25 season one.
01:26 Check it out.
01:27 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:30 -I need you back on that horse, Captain.
01:32 I'm pulling Enterprise out of space, Doc.
01:34 I want her crewed up and ready to fly by 1800.
01:36 -Course, Captain?
01:37 What's the mission?
01:38 -We explore.
01:39 We seek out new life and new civilizations.
01:42 -Cool.
01:43 -Hit it.
01:44 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:54 -We were reminded of the cost of exploration.
01:57 What it means to chart the stars, to push the boundaries
01:59 of what is known and what is possible.
02:02 When we seek out the unknown, we will find things that
02:04 challenge us.
02:06 -Spock, will you marry me?
02:07 -Spock, we're going back out.
02:09 -I will meet you on board, Captain.
02:10 T'Pring will understand.
02:11 -Your time in Starfleet may be causing you to behave in a
02:14 manner so human we may ultimately find
02:16 ourselves incompatible.
02:17 -You know how you used to brag you were going to be the best
02:19 pilot ever to graduate the Academy?
02:20 Time to prove it, Lieutenant.
02:21 -Initiating evasive pattern Ortegas Gamma One.
02:25 -Here's where things get weirder.
02:27 -You're suggesting the comet had foreknowledge
02:30 of future events?
02:31 -It knew its fate, you might say.
02:33 -I'm an Illyrian.
02:34 I've committed a Federation offense.
02:36 I'm resigning my commission.
02:38 -Ridge Acton.
02:38 I don't care where you come from.
02:39 You're the best First Officer on the fleet.
02:41 -You let me worry about Starfleet?
02:43 -I told her.
02:44 A year ago, she was diagnosed with cytochemia.
02:46 Somewhere out there is a planet that has the
02:49 discovery I need.
02:50 -Hello, Daddy.
02:51 -Promise me you'll be happy.
02:53 -I promise.
02:54 I know exactly how and when my life ends.
02:57 -Don't throw your life away, Chris.
02:59 -I accepted my fate.
03:02 -He doesn't like to take the path everyone else does.
03:04 -Sounds like a wild card.
03:05 -The truth is, he's as fine a captain as Starfleet has.
03:09 -Captain Kirk, welcome aboard the Enterprise.
03:11 -We found three castaways.
03:13 The D.R. Ryan was infected with Gorn X.
03:16 -The Gorn captured my family's colony ship.
03:18 -When they hunt, they're unrelenting.
03:20 Plenty of people have seen the Gorn.
03:23 They just don't live long enough to talk about it.
03:25 -What the hell is going on?
03:26 -I am arresting Commander Una Chin Riley for violations of
03:28 our anti-genetic modification directive.
03:30 -This isn't over.
03:31 -It is my great privilege to now talk to the commanding
03:37 officers of the USS Enterprise, Anson Mouth and
03:40 Rebecca Romijn.
03:41 It is wonderful to see both of you.
03:43 Thanks so much for being here.
03:44 -Oh, thanks, buddy, for having us.
03:46 -You know, a lot of modern series feature
03:48 serialized storytelling.
03:50 But "Strange New Worlds" is a callback to that episodic
03:54 style of storytelling that was so prevalent in the
03:56 20th century.
03:57 And this really allows for the cast to play in so many
04:02 different genres, like horror and adventure and comedy.
04:08 And you do it all under the umbrella of telling
04:11 Star Trek stories.
04:12 I would love for you to talk a little bit about what it is
04:15 like to experience all of the different worlds that make up
04:20 "Strange New Worlds."
04:23 -Anson and I have been having a blast finding comedy.
04:27 Right, Anson?
04:27 Hasn't that been fun?
04:29 That's been kind of a journey.
04:30 -That, combined with the freedom that Akiva and Henry
04:34 have instilled in the show to explore not just storyline,
04:37 but genre from episode to episode, has made it--
04:41 you can imagine, if it's fun to watch, how fun it is to make.
04:45 -Is there anything from season one that you really were
04:49 excited about, that you love, that you hope we will see more
04:52 of in season two?
04:54 -Well, buckle up for season two, is all I can say.
04:58 There is a little-- you know, everything from season one we
05:01 bring into season two, and then some.
05:04 I mean, it's a lot.
05:07 We're going to be taking some mighty big swings in season
05:11 two, we're very, very excited about it.
05:13 -Anson, I understand that you grew up as big a fan of the
05:17 original series as I did.
05:18 I hear that you would pretend that you were Captain Kirk,
05:22 playing Star Trek as a kid.
05:24 I pretended that I was Mr. Spock.
05:25 I loved it.
05:26 Are you willing to share something about those first few
05:30 moments you sat in your chair on the bridge of the USS
05:37 Enterprise?
05:38 -It was certainly different than pulling one of my parents'
05:41 lounge chairs up to the fireplace in our living room,
05:44 in which we thought the bridge--
05:47 I don't know, fireplace bridge.
05:49 -It's as good a view screen as any.
05:51 -Yeah, I guess so.
05:52 When I wanted to do my camera tests, our director said,
05:55 would you like to sit in the captain's chair for the first
05:57 time?
05:57 I said, sure, and I jumped in.
05:59 And I was like, whoa.
06:01 I was hit by this wave of nostalgia.
06:04 -Rebecca, throughout your career, you have played
06:07 characters in franchises with just enormous global fan
06:12 followings.
06:13 I'm curious to know how your experience as Una in Star Trek
06:18 is similar and different to your experiences in some of the
06:21 other incredibly iconic and well-known roles you've played.
06:26 -It is similar in that there's a hell of a lot of pressure to
06:29 get it right and not let down the fan base of the various
06:33 franchises.
06:34 So I will say it is different in that the Trek family is so
06:40 different.
06:42 I mean, it's--
06:44 and I feel like Trekkies get heard.
06:46 I think that things that come up, ideas or notes or
06:50 comments, things that come up from the fans get implemented.
06:54 -OK, last question, and this is a big one.
06:57 I would like both of you to imagine that I am a person who
07:02 just loves science fiction, right?
07:04 Like, I will not stop talking about Star Wars and the
07:07 Expanse, and I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
07:10 I love Mass Effect.
07:12 I love Halo.
07:13 I'm crazy about all of this stuff.
07:15 But for some reason, I have just never watched Star Trek.
07:19 What is it that Star Trek offers that I'm missing, and
07:22 why Strange New Worlds is a really great entry point for
07:26 me, this imaginary brand new Star Trek fan?
07:30 It's a big question.
07:31 Take your time.
07:32 -That's a very big question.
07:35 I mean, Strange New Worlds is the perfect starting point for
07:38 the Star Trek uninitiated.
07:40 You don't need to know much about the background.
07:43 -Yeah, I would say that really the driving energy of Star
07:46 Trek is that instinct that we have to walk beyond the
07:51 campfire light to see what's out there in the darkness
07:54 beyond, and to do it for the sake of the tribe.
07:58 There's something that really human that it taps into that I
08:02 haven't seen anywhere else.
08:04 -And with so much science fiction, which can be so heavy
08:08 and so dark and scary sometimes, the Trek world is
08:14 uplifting and operates in a space of
08:18 optimism and hopefulness.
08:20 And I think that's what separates us a lot from a lot
08:23 of other science fiction as well.
08:25 -Well, I, hypothetical giant science fiction fan who has
08:28 never watched Star Trek, am completely convinced.
08:31 Thank you.
08:32 I look forward to tuning in to Strange New Worlds.
08:34 On behalf of fandom, thank you for your work on Strange New
08:37 Worlds.
08:38 We are so unbelievably excited for this upcoming season.
08:41 And I'm really looking forward to crossing paths with y'all as
08:45 the year rolls out in front of us.
08:47 -Same.
08:47 -Oh, same here, man.
08:48 -Can't wait to see you, Will.
08:50 -Season two of Strange New Worlds, it just amps up
08:53 everything a thousand times more.
08:56 Season two is more.
08:58 We just did more.
08:59 We did bigger.
09:00 We did more bigger.
09:02 -In season two, we pick up on this incredible planet.
09:06 And I can't say, because I'm going to give it away.
09:09 -We took some real big swings this season.
09:11 -I hope they love it as much as we love doing it.
09:13 -The crew is going to face a whole bunch of new journeys
09:16 this year.
09:17 And we're going to do something in season two that's never been
09:19 done in any Star Trek show before.
09:20 -When they first pitched the idea and said,
09:23 it's a crossover episode with a lower dex,
09:25 I was like, that's brilliant.
09:27 -I'll never forget it.
09:28 It was an amazing episode to film.
09:29 -We are delighted to be able to offer up another set of
09:33 varying tones, another set of varying story structures,
09:37 and deepening and evolving character stories.
09:41 -I would like the ship to go.
09:44 Now.
09:45 [MUSIC PLAYING]
10:03 -Brace for impact.
10:04 [MUSIC PLAYING]
10:17 -Long before I became a member of the Star Trek family as
10:20 Wesley Crusher on Star Trek The Next Generation,
10:22 I was a major Star Trek fan.
10:26 Strange New World reminds me of the very best parts of the
10:30 original series, only with a modern angle and in high
10:32 definition.
10:34 Two episodes of Star Trek Strange New World stream on
10:36 Thursdays on Paramount Plus, the home of Star Trek.
10:39 And after you see each episode, I hope you'll join me in the
10:42 ready room, your behind the scenes hub of all things Star
10:45 Trek universe, where I'll have more Strange New World's
10:48 goodness to share with you.
10:49 Until then, I'm Will Wheatney.
10:52 Live long and prosper.
