00:36 An excruciating inner yearning for life and self-expression.

01:05 destined to die and ultimately no more significant than, let's say, a lizard or a potato,
01:11 is not especially uplifting.

01:32 All organisms have a life instinct, an instinct to live.
01:36 Our species has as much of that as any other species.
01:41 We also have the intelligence to know that we're doomed.
01:44 We can think of the old days, we can think of five million years from now,
01:48 we can think about what it would be like to be tap dancing on the Great Wall of China.
01:52 All of that is tremendous and all of it is highly problematic
01:56 because it renders us as human beings uniquely aware of the inevitability of our demise.
02:02 That creates a cognitive problem for us.
02:06 It creates a potentially enormous amount of anxiety that we have to do something with.

02:17 One of the easiest ways to make yourself feel more than mortal
02:23 is to stand as the conqueror of someone else.
02:27 And that can be done in socially acceptable ways,
02:30 but it also can manifest itself in violence.
02:35 The big problem with seeking immortality is that we invest in these larger structures
02:41 as our basis of security and immortality.
02:44 And then whenever something suggests that our structure is not right,
02:50 we're going to feel threatened and we're going to have to react against that.
02:54 More people have been killed in the name of God and country
02:59 than by all the serial murderers Jeffrey Dahmer types put together.
03:05 It's just a drop in the bucket compared to how much killing has gone on
03:08 out of loyalty, patriotism, love for God and country.
