Twitter risks losing credibility with rebrand - analyst

00:00 I think in changing the logo from Twitter to something different, and in the X logo,
00:18 it is completely different.
00:19 You know, there's no, there's no cute animal, it's a different color scheme, it's really
00:23 going to have a totally different appeal.
00:25 And I think they're throwing the baby out of the bathwater here.
00:28 And they're losing a lot of, ultimately a lot of credibility that Twitter has built
00:31 up over the last, you know, 10, 15 years.
00:35 And in the last few months, really, what they should have been doing, I think, is just rewinding
00:42 rather than rebuilding.
00:43 And that's kind of what we're seeing now with the new rebrand.
00:49 So the last few months have been tumultuous at Twitter, but a new brand, I don't think
00:53 is going to solve everything.
00:55 We've got the owner Elon Musk and the new CEO, Linda Iaccarino, both talking about the
01:01 rapid rate of new feature launches coming through audio, payments, connectivity.
01:08 I mean, I actually think that this is less about reinventing Twitter, and more about
01:12 building a brand around Elon Musk's current empire, which is, for example, SpaceX, where
01:19 the X brand really does connect a little bit more closely.
01:22 So I think this is more about ditching what Twitter has become and trying to build something
01:27 bigger around connectivity on the SpaceX platform.
01:45 I think much has been made of Twitter's recent turmoil and new challenger brands, social
01:52 networks looking to take Twitter's user base and move them over.
01:56 Threads, Blue Sky, Mastodon, to name just a few.
02:00 But Twitter has actually held onto a core user base over recent months.
02:04 A recent Ofcom report published actually shows that Twitter is the number one source for
02:09 breaking news for UK adults in some sectors, such as politics.
02:14 So I actually think there was a lot that Twitter could have held onto were it to have worked
02:18 on it and improved its features rather than throw everything away to a certain extent
02:23 and go with this rebrand.
02:41 I think Twitter and X's rebrand, how it's actually taken shape, to me is a little strange.
02:46 It won't have the mass appeal of Twitter because of how it's actually been carried out.
02:50 So we've seen just in the last few hours in the dark in San Francisco, the X logo beamed
02:57 up onto the side of the Twitter headquarters.
03:00 And it looks almost like something out of a dystopian movie, maybe something out of
03:03 Gotham City and Batman.
03:05 Everything's very dark.
03:06 It certainly is not going to have the mass appeal.
03:09 So there's going to be some thought put into why is it so dark?
03:13 Why is it being carried out at night on a Sunday night?
03:16 So I think the targeting of the audience is going to be something to play for here.
03:22 And that will be something they've factored into the way that the brand actually looks
03:27 and the brand activation work that they're doing right now as well.
