The survey of Gyanvapi Mosque in Varanasi by ASI which began today at 7 am in the morning came to a halt by 12 pm after the Supreme Court of India passed Status Quo.

Following the order from a Chief Justice of India-led bench, the survey work by ASI could not be performed within the premises of the Gyanvapi Mosque till Wednesday.

The Supreme Court has asked the Muslim-side to approach the Allahabad High Court within 2 days, against the Varanasi district court order. The Muslim-side has stated to the media that they would move the Allahabad High Court latest by Monday-evening, that is today.

The survey which was carried by ASI this morning was on the order of the Varanasi Court.

Last Friday, the district court of Varanasi had directed the ASI to submit the survey report of Gyanvapi Mosque by August 4, along with the photos and videos of survey proceedings.

ASI was asked by the Varanasi court to carry out GPR surveys under three domes of the mosque and beneath the western walls. The court had further directed to perform excavation if required.

The order by Varanasi Court was passed on the plea by four women worshippers who claimed Gyanvapi mosque was built over a pre-existing Hindu temple.

The mosque management committee had filed the petition in Supreme Court against the Varanasi district court’s order allowing the survey in Gyanvapi mosque.

After this order of the Supreme Court, the Allahabad High Court has to decide the matter afresh.
