President Biden will sign a proclamation designating the national monument on July 25.
That date also represents what
would have been Till's 82nd birthday. .
Till was kidnapped, tortured and murdered at the age of 14 when he was accused of grabbing and flirting with a white woman.
The men who were acquitted in
his murder later confessed to the killing
in an interview with a magazine.
Carolyn Bryant Donham, the woman who accused Till of harassing her, later confessed that her testimony was a lie. .
Till's mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, was "instrumental in keeping the story of
[his] murder alive," NPR reports.
