In this quick 9 interview, we put the questions to Sky Sports commentator Inci Mehmet
Transcript
00:00 (dramatic music)
00:03 - Tiger Woods, although I have played with him before.
00:06 I'm just gonna drop that in there.
00:07 For me, it would be the home of Golf St. Andrews.
00:09 I just think it's a really special place.
00:11 It was just taking on like the most absurd corner
00:13 and I struck it out the middle
00:15 and ended up making the birdie and keeping my tour card.
00:18 So, and I ended up kind of shanking my driver
00:21 and like, actually no, I think it was like a semi shank
00:25 slash top in front of everyone,
00:28 in front of all the counties.
00:29 So that was quite embarrassing.
00:31 (upbeat music)
00:34 - Okay, Incy, your dream pool ball?
00:38 - This is a difficult question.
00:40 I feel like you need time to think about things like that.
00:42 I would say Tiger Woods,
00:45 although I have played with him before.
00:47 I'm just gonna drop that in there.
00:49 If, do you know what,
00:51 I think Serena Williams is getting into golf.
00:53 I think she's an amazing female athlete.
00:57 I went to my first ever basketball game yesterday.
01:00 I know Steph Curry loves golf.
01:02 - Doesn't he?
01:03 - I'm very good at golf as well.
01:04 - And then me, so I'm the football, right?
01:05 - Okay, favourite golf course in the world?
01:07 - Favourite golf course in the world.
01:10 For me would be the home of Golf St. Andrews.
01:12 I just think it's a really special place.
01:14 So much history has gone down there,
01:16 but just also the experience of walking
01:17 over the Silicon Bridge is special like no other.
01:20 - Best golf shot you've ever hit?
01:21 Or really memorable good golf shot?
01:23 - Best golf shot I ever hit was playing with this man
01:26 behind the camera, Jay.
01:27 No, I'm joking.
01:29 - What was it like to play with me?
01:31 - What was it like to play with you, Jay?
01:32 It was an absolute honour.
01:34 Actually, do you know what, I do know.
01:36 Back in like 2018 maybe, I can't remember the year exactly.
01:41 I had to birdie the last four of the six holes
01:45 at the Emirates Golf Club.
01:47 This was for the Amiga Masters on the L.E.T. Tour.
01:49 It was just taking on like the most absurd corner
01:51 and I struck it out the middle
01:54 and ended up making the birdie and keeping my tour card.
01:56 So I think given the pressures and what I had to do
02:00 by the four of the last five holes,
02:01 that was all part of it.
02:02 So drive on 18 at Emirates Majlis, of course.
02:06 - Okay, flip side of this.
02:07 Worst golf shot you've ever hit?
02:08 - Oh, there's way too many.
02:10 Oh my, actually, do you know what?
02:12 Yeah, yeah, I remember.
02:12 I was playing for Surrey, my county.
02:14 I was off first.
02:15 I was leading the group out a bit like today, you know?
02:18 And it was a drivable par four.
02:21 I think we were playing Walton Heath
02:23 and I just remember wanting to hit it so hard
02:25 to try and hit the green, right?
02:27 And I ended up kind of shanking my driver.
02:29 I think it was like a semi-shank slash top
02:32 in front of everyone, in front of all the counties.
02:35 So that was quite embarrassing.
02:36 - Best tip or piece of advice you've ever been given
02:39 for golf or in life?
02:40 - For golf? - Yeah.
02:41 - Like a good one that I heard.
02:43 So I worked with Graham Walker a little bit.
02:46 He works with Tommy Fleetwood,
02:47 predominantly on the short game.
02:48 And I had a lesson with him once
02:50 and he was saying after a bad shot,
02:52 you can get annoyed if that's the way you react,
02:55 but instead of leaving it on the note of being annoyed,
02:59 like rehearse what you could have done better.
03:01 So at least you've let the emotion out
03:04 and you've actually rehearsed what you should have done.
03:07 So you leave on a high note
03:08 and it's not only like an emotional high,
03:10 it's also like a feeling.
03:12 So next time you're with the same shot,
03:14 then you can approach it better.
03:15 - Okay, you've just won the Open.
03:16 Congratulations. - Wow, thank you.
03:17 - The pirate jug is in your hand.
03:18 - Pirate jug, okay.
03:19 - The pirate jug is in your hand.
03:20 What are you filling it?
03:21 What are you filling it with to drink
03:23 to celebrate the success?
03:25 - How PG are we keeping this?
03:27 - Go with whatever you wanna go with it.
03:30 - Honestly, I've actually really got
03:31 into ginger beer recently.
03:33 And I think I had my first ever ginger beer
03:37 about two months ago.
03:38 And I'm a big fan of the drink, yeah.
03:40 So, but I think there's only so much you can drink
03:43 of ginger beer 'cause it's so fizzy.
03:44 - How about like a Moscow Mule,
03:45 which is vodka ginger beer, but a lot.
03:47 - Maybe.
03:47 - Or keeping it, keeping ginger beer.
03:49 - I've not had many Moscow Mules, but I'll take your word.
03:51 Maybe order one tonight.
03:52 - So we're in a car, Bluetooth speakers attached to it,
03:54 tunes are blaring, what's on your playlist?
03:56 What are you playing for us?
03:57 - Let's get a bit of Queen B out.
03:59 I'm one of those where everyone hates
04:02 because I like chart music and it's embarrassing,
04:06 but you gotta own it.
04:07 So, maybe a song with a bit of attitude from Queen B.
04:11 - Strangest thing in your golf bag
04:13 or something you keep in there
04:14 that's maybe a bit superstitious
04:16 or that's just always been in there?
04:18 (laughs)
04:19 - I'm quite minimalist, so I try
04:21 and not have too much rubbish in there.
04:23 The weirdest thing in my golf bag.
04:25 Well, actually, how about this?
04:26 So, today I bought this marker.
04:30 It says, no three putts.
04:33 - I saw that in the shot.
04:34 - And I'm pretty sure I three putted the second hole.
04:37 So, it hasn't worked, but I'm gonna keep it in my pocket.
04:40 Yeah, exactly.
04:41 - Last one in to you on the quick nine
04:43 is how do we get even more people playing golf?
04:47 - I think it's a collective effort of us,
04:52 I say us, us golfers, golf fans,
04:57 breaking down barriers
05:00 and having some better representatives.
05:04 Because, I mean, even this week
05:05 we were talking about relatability.
05:07 And so, I think the power of relatability is massive
05:11 'cause I think if you see someone doing something,
05:13 I think you can feel like you can do it too.
05:15 I mean, I played with Logan today, who's got one arm
05:18 and he is so impressive from an attitude perspective,
05:21 but also in what he's capable of
05:24 and what a pleasure to be around.
05:26 And affordability, it just annoys me how expensive golf is.
05:29 I'm not gonna name names here,
05:30 but equipment for instance, like a brand new driver
05:33 comes out, I'm in a position where I've not actually
05:37 had to buy a golf club for quite a while.
05:39 And so, when I found out how much it was, I was shocked.
05:44 And I think even if I had all the money in the world,
05:47 it's still an expensive piece of equipment to buy.
05:52 And I found it really shocking.
05:54 And this is a bit of a secret of mine
05:55 and I know I'm getting filmed right now,
05:56 but one of my passions is to actually transform golf
05:59 to a bit more of a subscription model.
06:01 I'm gonna patent this, you heard it here first, okay?
06:04 I've never heard anyone talk about it,
06:06 but I don't understand why.
06:07 - I thought about it.
06:08 If you subscribe to X amount a month,
06:10 you get this set of clubs or bag or whatever.
06:13 - Yeah, I've got a bigger vision,
06:14 but I'm not gonna say too much.
06:16 - Great stuff.
06:17 (upbeat music)
06:19 (upbeat music)
06:22 (upbeat music)
