00:00 "Hi Barbie!" "Hi Ken!"
00:02 Could we be getting a Barbie sequel? Well, director Greta Gerwig is revealing whether or not she
00:07 sees one in her future. During an interview with the New York Times, the filmmaker was asked if she
00:12 sees the blockbuster film as the start of a franchise. The director noted, "At this moment,
00:17 it's all I've got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I'll never have another idea,
00:22 and everything I've ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn't want to squash anybody else's dream,
00:27 but for me, at this moment, I'm at totally zero." A sequel wouldn't be totally out of left field,
00:33 seeing as Barbie scored a record-breaking debut weekend, earning one of the top openings since
00:37 the pandemic, with $162 million at the North American box office, and Gerwig also breaking
00:44 the opening weekend record for a female director. Gerwig also discussed the massive praise the film
00:49 has been receiving, saying, "Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine something like this. My hope
00:55 for the movie is that it's an invitation for everybody to be part of the party and let go of
01:00 the things that aren't necessarily serving us as either women or men." The filmmaker also addressed
01:05 some of the disagreements the film's creative team had with Mattel throughout filming. It was
01:10 previously reported that Richard Dixon, COO and president of Mattel, went to the London set at one
01:15 point and argued with Gerwig and star Margot Robbie over a scene where a teenage human calls
01:21 Barbie dolls "sexist and fascist." "They were coming anyway, so it wasn't like, 'Stop everything,
01:26 we all have to go to London.'" Although she never got a full seal of approval from Mattel,
01:30 she explained, "She got them to accept it enough to proceed. I had faith once it was in there,
01:35 and they saw it that they would embrace it, not fight it." For more on this story, head to THR.com.
