00:00 A $1 million lawsuit against Taylor Swift has been dropped.
00:06 According to court documents obtained by E! News, Teresa LaDarte filed to dismiss her
00:11 $1 million copyright lawsuit against the singer on July 26.
00:15 She had alleged Taylor's 2019 book, Lover, that was released as an extra along with her
00:20 album of the same name, was similar to Teresa's self-published book of poems, also called
00:25 Lover.
00:26 E! News reached out to Taylor's rep and Teresa's lawyer but has not received a comment on the
00:30 lawsuit dismissal.
00:32 Per Teresa's August 2022 complaint filed in a Tennessee federal court, she claimed that
00:37 design and textual elements from her 2010 book Lover were copied into Taylor's.
00:42 According to legal documents obtained by E! News, the author's lawyers alleged that the
00:47 Grammy winner's book, which sold 2.9 million copies in the U.S. alone, infringed Teresa's
00:52 copyrights and that Taylor owed their client in excess of $1 million in damages.
00:58 Teresa also said Taylor borrowed a number of visual elements that mimicked her book
01:03 and that both had substantially the same format of a recollection of past years memorialized
01:08 in a combination of written and pictorial components.
01:12 As for the alleged similarities, they consisted of covers that both featured pastel pinks
01:16 and blues, as well as an image of the writer photographed in a downward pose.
01:22 Back in February, Taylor's lawyer Doug Baldrige spoke out on the lawsuit, saying in a statement
01:26 per Billboard, "This is a lawsuit that never should have been filed.
01:30 These allegedly infringing elements, each a generic design format, are not subject to
01:35 copyright protection."
01:36 Thus, defendants could not possibly have infringed plaintiff's copyright.
01:40 However, Teresa's counsel, William S. Parks, responded to Doug's comments with a statement
01:45 as well, saying at the time, "Ms. Ledart has questions that will hopefully and eventually
01:50 be answered regarding her perceived similarities between the two works."
01:54 Unfortunately, she felt it necessary to bring this suit in order to possibly obtain such
01:58 answers.
01:59 We will see how the judge decides at this point.
02:02 Ledart's lawyers filed to dismiss the matter with prejudice.
