00:06 >> You kind of said, praise how you have embraced your role,
00:10 this going into this season.
00:13 Would you agree with that and how would you describe that?
00:16 >> Well, my role is to get better every single day.
00:19 And if I'm getting better, then we're all getting better.
00:22 So I'm grateful to have the opportunity to come to work every day and compete.
00:27 Right, and that's just a part of my livelihood, we all in this thing to compete.
00:30 And I gotta push everybody around me.
00:34 >> How are you feeling?
00:35 >> I'm getting better.
00:37 I am getting better.
00:37 [BLANK_AUDIO]
00:41 >> Jamis, any significance for the haircut?
00:43 Looks like the first day of school kind of cut that you got going there.
00:47 >> Well, I mean, the long hair was just, the significance was there.
00:51 Like, I've been had a haircut, so just gotta look good.
00:55 I went home to see my mama last weekend, spent some time with my brother and
00:58 my pop.
00:59 So I went ahead and cut it off.
01:01 The facial hair was a different thing, but I like, just made me look,
01:05 well, I'm not gonna say it, but you can tell me it makes me look like five years
01:09 younger. >> [LAUGH]
01:10 >> I was gonna say,
01:11 it's like the Florida State days.
01:11 Like you got there, yeah.
01:12 >> Taking it back to the old school.
01:14 >> Have you done anything this offseason just in terms of approach,
01:17 just with your body or anything else?
01:19 Have you tweaked anything in terms of how you're getting ready for
01:21 this training camp?
01:22 >> Yeah, preparation change in terms of not over training,
01:28 not doing as much as I've done in the past, more corrective things for my body.
01:33 More intentional things, small things, marginalism,
01:36 that's a big thing that I focus on this offseason.
01:39 Just doing small increments of things and continue to improve.
01:43 >> Jamis, when you came into the league,
01:45 was there a gathering quarterback with the Bucs who kind of had a positive
01:50 influence on the room that maybe you can draw on now to have that kind of
01:54 influence on the quarterback room?
01:56 >> Well, I definitely embrace that cuz I know how important that is.
01:59 Mike Glennon was two years ahead of me.
02:03 He was a great teammate.
02:05 Ryan Griffin was with me all years there, but he still was a young quarterback.
02:09 Ron Fitzpatrick, I got to spend two years with him, and he was awesome.
02:14 Just his coolness, his presence, and
02:18 his ability to make the room, I would say, very fun.
02:24 Yeah, he had just a fun personality, and that's my role here.
02:27 We got a young quarterback in Jake, a veteran quarterback in Derrick.
02:31 And my role is to come to work every single day and give it my best and
02:36 be able to cater to those guys so we all can help lift each other up and go higher.
02:40 >> What's it been like building a relationship with Derrick?
02:44 >> It's been fun, man.
02:45 My favorite thing about him, he's an excellent man of God, man.
02:48 He's a fun-loving guy, great energy, very easy to talk to.
02:52 It's just good coming to work every single day and
02:55 you know that your quarterback is approachable, and he's just a fun guy.
02:59 >> Was it tough to decide to stay in New Orleans for you?
03:03 >> No, no, it wasn't, cuz I'm grateful for this opportunity to be the quarterback
03:07 here, and I know I'm not finished here.
03:10 I love this city, I love our fans, I love y'all guys, on most of the day.
03:14 But no, it's a privilege to be in the NFL.
03:19 And anytime you have an opportunity to be a quarterback, especially one of the 32.
03:24 And I do know that I'm still one of those 32,
03:27 just my role here is to help uplift our one so we can get us the Super Bowl.
03:32 >> Right.
03:32 >> And I love that.
03:34 >> Mario just talked to us about some of his off field,
03:37 things that he had going on when he was younger.
03:40 Looking back on some of the things that you had off the field earlier in your
03:44 career in college, how much do you feel that has impacted you as a person?
03:48 [INAUDIBLE]
03:49 >> Well, every single day I'm looking for
03:51 a way to improve, right, whether that's on the field, off the field.
03:55 And just as a man, you have to continue to move forward and
03:58 you have to continue to get better.
04:00 I don't believe and stand the same, right?
04:03 So just the holistic part of me being a leader in my household,
04:06 having kids that's looking up to me every day, being a great husband to my wife.
04:10 I have to continue to improve and
04:13 hopefully that leadership carries on within my house.
04:16 >> James, adding on to the quarterbacks,
04:20 going back to your college days, Derrick Brooks and Charlie Ward.
04:26 Do you still have contact with them and
04:30 what was it like for you having those two helping you out with your career?
04:34 >> Yeah, absolutely, Charlie Ward, it was more of the admiration phase with him and
04:41 we developed a relationship over the years.
04:43 But man, Derrick Brooks has been one of my mentors since I stepped foot on campus
04:47 at Florida State and luckily I was able to go to Tampa where he was living.
04:51 So he has always been one of those voices in my head that had a lot of impact on me.
04:57 So just him being a Hall of Fame linebacker and having a true perspective and
05:01 being one of the great really film watchers or
05:05 prepared players in league history has helped me with my career tremendously.
05:10 >> And how much being with Drew brings?
05:13 >> Yeah, that one year with Drew and Sean, that was the daily combination.
05:17 Drew is the Hall of Fame and he had a vision.
05:20 But seeing the continuity of them two together was so
05:25 important for my growth and me moving forward.
05:28 >> James, what are some differences you've noticed in Rashid and
05:31 Chris Alavi in year two as opposed to when they came in as a rookie and
05:34 you worked a lot with them?
05:36 >> The biggest difference is they're older, and they're not older in terms of that,
05:41 but it's just the way that they view the game.
05:43 They're older in the system, I'll put it that way.
05:47 And they're just on top of, they're playing faster.
05:50 Those two guys, I've had some great young receivers in my career,
05:54 one of them being Chris Godwin, and they're in that category and
05:59 striving to be better, right, with electric speed, strong hands, and
06:04 lateral quickness, and length.
06:07 That's one thing those guys have.
06:09 They're six foot, six one, but they're extremely long.
06:13 Both of them remind me of Deshaun Jackson,
06:15 the way that they attack the ball and how they can get behind the defense.
06:18 >> James, what are your first impressions on the rookie, Jake Hayner?
06:22 >> I think he's gonna be a great quarterback in his league.
06:25 He works his tail off, right?
06:26 He's always studying to prepare.
06:28 And he's just a fun guy.
06:31 He loves football.
06:31 He has a chip on his shoulder.
06:33 People talked about, we were talking about the transport portal the other day.
06:39 He transferred from Washington to Fresno State.
06:41 He has a chip on his shoulder.
06:42 And when you're coming into this league,
06:44 you wanna have that edge to push you harder to go far.
06:48 >> James, who's the photo you're gonna take?
06:52 >> Man, this is a Father's Day gift that I got from my wife.
06:55 And the middle is my grandmother's.
06:58 I got both my grandmothers.
07:00 That's a popular one, my draft day picture.
07:02 But this one is Patricia White.
07:04 She's who raised me till I was about 14.
07:08 And these are my two babies.
07:09 But I almost got, like, almost teared up when my wife gifted me this.
07:16 Because these two women on my chest are so influential to me.
07:20 And I do my best to carry on their legacy every day.
07:23 Thank you for asking that.
07:25 >> James, one more question before the state.
07:28 What do you feel about them this year?
07:30 Do you think it'll be a pretty good year?
07:32 >> Yeah, I'm certain that they're gonna have a phenomenal year under the leadership
07:35 of Coach Mike Norvell and Jordan Travis.
07:38 We got a great quarterback, a great defense headed by Jared Burks.
07:42 And you got a great head coach who's a great leader.
07:45 And you get the guys to rally behind him.
07:47 I know you guys are gonna be pulling for the Tigers.
07:51 But I will be pulling for the Noles when we go to Orlando and
07:55 take care of business yet again.
07:57 >> I might be rooting for the Noles.
07:58 >> [LAUGH] >> I'm gonna be rooting for the Noles.
08:01 I'm not gonna grab one.
08:02 >> James, you spoke a bit about your connection with whether it be the media
08:06 core, the players, the organization, everything.
08:08 Can you expand a little bit further on just your example?
08:10 >> Yeah, I grew up five hours down the road in Birmingham, Alabama.
08:16 Grew up admiring the likes of Aaron Brooks and Drew Brees.
08:21 So I'm a kid that grew up somewhat of a Saints fan.
08:24 I actually was an Eagles fan because of Andy Reed.
08:26 But my other team was the Saints because of their pedigree,
08:30 because of Sean, because of Drew.
08:32 Admiration of Aaron Brooks, just the things that they did here.
08:36 And when I got here, this city, they took me in.
08:41 And I respected that.
08:42 And this is a football town.
08:45 You go to other towns where football might not be as important to some people.
08:50 But I know in this city, we love football.
08:54 So I really love that.
08:56 And I was embraced by the city, and I love them back.
08:58 >> You came here for Manning Award too, I remember that.
09:02 >> Yeah, yep, I did.
09:03 But that was a day in and out.
09:06 Once you get affiliated with the Manning,
09:08 you feel like you're on top going to the Manning passing the cannon.
09:12 Me and Archie, me and Payne, me and Eli, I gotta try to slide in their door a little
09:18 bit more often.
