00:00 I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to do now.
00:02 You have to go to the real world.
00:04 The transition between Barbie Land and the real world
00:06 is a series of transportation vehicles that get us there.
00:09 Kind of like in this 2D endless tracking shot.
00:12 Every time we shot one of those transportation sequences,
00:16 it was the most satisfying thing to watch.
00:18 It's not Barbie Land and it's not the real world,
00:20 and it had six different environments that Ken and Barbie travel through.
00:24 We get to camp and we get to be in space
00:26 and we get to be sailors and all these little things.
00:29 From space and time to land and Barbie Land.
00:32 None of it's CGI and it's just presentational as if you were watching a play.
00:36 It was using these old silent movie film techniques.
00:39 It looked like a Carl Zemman movie.
00:41 I settled on wanting it to look like a diorama in the Natural History Museum.
00:46 Each box contains a scene and I wanted them to sort of move through that scene
00:50 and then come out and then move through the next scene.
00:53 We looked at theatrical methods of making things work.
00:56 So the foreground goes very fast, then it goes slightly slower, slower.
01:00 It's all very flat in 2D, so you might have a boat that's moving while the water's moving.
01:07 And that's literally like our crew members pulling a rope like this
01:11 and putting little bits of cellophane on the water
01:14 to make it look like it's twinkling like water.
01:16 In this movie, I wanted to paint in big, beautiful, broad strokes
01:22 and build this crazy world.
01:24 It's something where I just want people to feel just joyful.
01:28 (upbeat music)
