00:00 This all started when our Russian colleagues dug up a bit of permafrost for their studies

00:21 and they found that after thawing this, some nematodes crawled out of it.

00:26 So they knew that this piece of soil had been frozen for a very long time and then used

00:32 radiocarbon dating later to determine that it's actually been frozen for 46,000 years.

00:37 It's kind of a super fascinating finding to suddenly see live, living animals crawling

00:41 out of a piece of soil that has been deep frozen for 46,000 years.

00:46 And I think by studying these species, comparing their genomes and see how they adapted to

01:05 these extreme conditions, we can learn a lot about conservation biology.

01:09 We can learn things that could inform us to maybe save endangered species and think about

01:18 protection measures and all these things.
