00:00 At the top of the food chain, it's hard to imagine a big cat having very much competition.
00:11 Lions, tigers, cheetahs, they're all vicious, powerful creatures.
00:17 But what happens when the stars don't align on their side?
00:20 These predators might usually have the upper hand, but it can't always go perfectly.
00:25 Sometimes it's a misstep that couldn't have avoided, but sometimes it's a matter of
00:28 messing with the wrong prey at the wrong time.
00:31 So keep your arms and feet inside the safari bus at all times, and stay glued to your seat.
00:36 You're going to want to make sure to watch all the way through so don't miss the surprising
00:40 twists at the end.
00:41 From the gentlest creatures to horned beasts packing a powerful punch, here are 30 times
00:47 animals gave a tough time to big cats.
00:49 30.
00:50 Wildebeests are solid and unique creatures.
00:53 Unlike almost any other in the animal kingdom, they're built like fearsome Frankenstein to
00:57 gather a few animals.
00:58 They have the front legs of an ox, the back legs of an antelope, and the mane and tail
01:02 of a horse.
01:03 Not to mention their curved, sharp horns provide an extra layer of personal protection against
01:07 anyone who comes their way.
01:09 They also have known as the "new" and one of the most specialized and successful African
01:13 herbivores, dominating the plains' ecosystems.
01:16 Despite this, though, other animals seemingly didn't get the memo.
01:19 Like the lion, trying to catch a quick bite to eat, he quickly bites off more than he
01:24 can chew.
01:25 The wildebeest's powerful legs are quick thinking saved him from this inevitable end, and she
01:29 did this line out of her lunch.
01:32 29.
01:33 This warthog didn't want to back down.
01:35 If you'd just been attacked, you'd be less pissed too, wouldn't you?
01:39 The lion in question seems a little distracted, admittedly, and maybe that's why she eventually
01:43 backs off.
01:44 Either way, this little guy's tenacity probably saved him a world of pain.
01:48 It makes us feel like maybe it's more of them fought back.
01:51 A lion's wouldn't feel so "on top of the world", would they?
01:55 28.
01:56 Sometimes not being fast enough can cost you a meal, and it did for this lion.
02:00 No matter how stealthy she thought she was being, the young wildebeest didn't stay around
02:04 long enough to find out what came next.
02:06 He may not be the fastest herbivore, but those quick movements went on to save him from the
02:11 jaws of a predator, so who am I to judge?
02:14 27.
02:15 A mother's love knows no bounds.
02:17 This is especially true for the animal kingdom.
02:19 This leopard didn't stand a chance when they went against the warthog.
02:23 He might have won in the end, a set of jaws like that, as well as speed and agility unmatched.
02:27 Only the warthog didn't go down without a fight.
02:30 Don't mess with the mothers of any species, much less an angry wild boar.
02:35 26.
02:37 Amazingly enough, these wildebeests not only outrun a pack of lionesses on the kill, but
02:42 made it across a lake with what seems like very few injuries.
02:45 If you watch closely, they not only jump over their would-be killers, but directly into
02:50 the water and through it without skipping a beat.
02:52 I know many of the creatures display some stunningly quick thinking and oppressive skills
02:56 on this list, but there's something so smooth about the way this big guy moves.
03:01 Saying it's impressive almost does it a disservice.
03:04 25.
03:06 Sometimes it's more than getting away.
03:08 If you're anything like this wildebeest, you can fight back.
03:11 Sometimes these predators can get an easy meal, and sometimes they pick the spunky one
03:14 in the bunch, armed with horns and a bad attitude.
03:19 Wild pigs are not the cute little muddy creatures you see on the farm.
03:22 From massive tusks to protective fur, they're a far cry from the barnyard.
03:27 But warthogs and wild boars are not something to be trifled with.
03:30 These big cats learn that the hard way.
03:33 24.
03:34 Mountain lions Like any predator, they're not to be trifled
03:37 with, but neither is a goat with an attitude problem, and 14-inch horns.
03:42 They're nasty creatures who will hold grudges, and next to him the mountain lion looks like
03:46 a rowdy house cat who's just been caught doing something he's not supposed to.
03:51 Where's the spray bottle at when you need it?
03:54 23.
03:55 I would say not all animal encounters go down like the Lion King.
03:59 But more accurate would probably be almost no animal encounters are anything like the
04:03 Lion King.
04:04 Nala and Puma in the Disney classic got along swimmingly, but this warthog seems to have
04:08 a bone to pick with his lioness friend.
04:11 The way he's standing his ground is impressive, as if nothing was threatening about a big
04:15 prowling cat circling.
04:17 22.
04:18 This rhino In particular, was not ready to be anyone's
04:21 lunch.
04:22 Clearly the lions understood what they were going up against, but that still wasn't enough.
04:26 Maybe the horns spooked them is an excellent line of defense, but what they thought would
04:30 be easy pigs things was clearly not.
04:33 21.
04:35 Ostriches are the world's largest birds.
04:36 They're fiercely territorial, known best for being protective.
04:40 These bipedal birds are often known for biting off more than they can chew.
04:43 They're so aggressive that they'll attack anything that comes near.
04:47 More often than not, they'll go on to win whatever fight they go against.
04:50 Mostly because whoever they're fighting against doesn't want to fight an ostrich who has nothing
04:54 to lose.
04:55 They use a little bit of how they feel, like they're ready to die fighting.
04:59 Lucky for these guys, they didn't have to.
05:02 Sometimes being bipedal pays off.
05:04 This ostrich saw its opening and bolted.
05:06 The thing about that, and you'll probably be surprised to hear this, but ostriches are
05:09 the second fastest land animal out there if you don't count them with the birds.
05:14 Second only to cheetahs, and what they lack in speed they make up for in confidence.
05:19 Chances are they'll outrun something on pure spite alone.
05:22 Good for them.
05:23 20.
05:24 There's something worthy saying about a mother's instinct, but whether it outranks an animal's
05:28 will to live is questionable at best.
05:30 Similarly, the ostrich looks at its quick opening, getting away from its would-be attackers
05:34 and sacrificing her baby in the process.
05:37 Sometimes it's rough out there in nature.
05:39 That's how things go.
05:40 Have you ever been on a safari?
05:41 Whether it's on the actual savannah or a simulated one in a theme park, there's a unique energy
05:46 that comes from safari rides.
05:48 Feeling like you're surrounded by wildlife, you get a chance to feel what the wild would
05:51 be like.
05:52 What would you do if you got to see one of these twists of fate in person?
05:56 Leave us a comment down below.
05:59 19.
06:00 Nobody is out here questioning whether the strong hippo is a worthy opponent.
06:04 Chances are a hippo would take down nearly any other animal out there.
06:07 But what about wounded, and against five lions at once?
06:11 This hippo doesn't look as large as others, but there's still a powerhouse.
06:14 Not only do they stay alive, but they defend themselves against a pack of lions like a
06:19 champ.
06:20 It just goes to show how crazy powerful they are.
06:24 18.
06:28 Zebras don't just kick with their legs.
06:30 Getting one good kick in would be powerful enough, but getting both legs in?
06:35 Devastating.
06:36 This guy was not here to be someone's lunch, that's for sure.
06:39 The zebra might not be able to hide, but with a kick like that, they really shouldn't have
06:43 to.
06:44 Lions and other predators probably don't go after one of these otherwise easy targets
06:48 unless they're sure they can handle it.
06:50 Rather funny to think it might take a few lions to bring down a zebra, isn't it?
06:56 17.
06:57 Sometimes hunger works against their favor because the hungrier you are, the less likely
07:01 you are to have a clear head.
07:03 In this lioness's case, chances are she thought she'd grab a fast meal and recoup her strength.
07:08 But the zebra was too quick, jumping out to some rocks, leaving behind the would-be predator
07:12 to her hungry stomach.
07:14 You never want to make decisions mad, and you never want to try to hunt on an empty
07:17 stomach.
07:18 Basic stuff.
07:20 16.
07:21 This wildebeest here takes on two lionesses at once, kicking and moving with a finesse
07:26 that makes me feel like this isn't his first rodeo.
07:28 Much like a drunk person in a bar trying to stay on the bull, this lion is somehow both
07:33 stuck and not able to keep on her prey.
07:35 Who said specialized horns weren't a killer asset?
07:39 15.
07:40 Honestly, I'm leading to believe mountain animals might just be built differently.
07:44 These mountain goats are not having it when the snow leopard comes in to have a go at
07:47 them.
07:48 They're built tough, much more brutal than their ground compatriots.
07:52 Chances are they'll remember his face too.
07:53 You better find a new stomping ground.
07:56 Now.
07:57 14.
07:58 Giraffes are graceful and gentle, but they're also deceptively powerful.
08:04 They might be herbivores, but they're also the tallest land mammal.
08:07 They also get as large as 2,600 pounds at a whopping 20 feet high.
08:11 So maybe you shouldn't come as much of a surprise when they get throw-that-size-around.
08:14 Likewise, it shouldn't be such a surprise when you hear about a giraffe kicking its
08:18 way out of a situation.
08:20 If you've got the power behind your back legs, then it may save you from a world of
08:23 hurt.
08:24 But this giraffe was lucky, one properly aimed kick and they're free to go.
08:30 13.
08:31 How about another example of "don't mess with a baby when the mother's around"?
08:37 This baby giraffe would not have made it very far had their mother not quickly stepped in.
08:41 And it's clear the lions who were circling were not about to mess with the mother.
08:45 A couple of good stomps dissuade them entirely.
08:48 Which with legs like that, can you blame them?
08:51 Better luck next time.
08:53 12.
08:54 This giraffe barely seems fazed by the lionesses trying to take them down.
08:58 It's almost comical.
08:59 I guess when you're that big, it's hard to take the little things down there so seriously.
09:04 One good kick and that would spell disaster.
09:06 So maybe it's for the best they took it as a warning and got out.
09:10 11.
09:11 Gazelles are graceful, light-footed and quick.
09:14 They're not just the first animal you imagine when you're thinking "could take down a predator".
09:18 But maybe you should consider them given the 14-inch horns spiraling out of their skulls.
09:23 They're quick.
09:24 They can be lethal.
09:25 And above all, they want to live.
09:26 But isn't that true of all animals?
09:28 If given a chance, most creatures would fight back for their own lives.
09:32 Sometimes the fighters come in small packages.
09:35 Gazelles may be light on their feet, but that means every decision they make is a fast one.
09:39 Much like the coyote and the roadrunner, they have to think quickly or be eaten.
09:42 They have to be quicker than the predator.
09:45 And when you have horns like that, you better be using them to your advantage.
09:48 10.
09:50 Sometimes the best choice you can make is just playing dead.
09:53 Like other animals, most predators prefer to catch their prey live in the hunt.
09:56 It's less about the fun aspect of it and probably a survival technique.
10:00 Some scavenging creatures will hunt carcasses, but rarely will a predator like a cheetah
10:04 take time to carve up a dead hunk of meat.
10:07 That doesn't mean the hyena doesn't, but the gazelle gets out of there fast enough
10:16 that they're scot-free.
10:18 9.
10:25 Gazelles are wicked fast, and like other prey animals, very much aware of their surroundings.
10:30 Not only did this gentle creature display cunning enough to trick a lion into running
10:34 the wrong direction, but they got away with it too.
10:37 So fast, blink and you'd miss it.
10:41 8.
10:42 Water buffaloes are hardly a threat.
10:44 They're generally slow moving due to their size and feed mainly on vegetation and aquatic
10:48 plants.
10:49 They are the world's largest bovine, with a height of 6 feet, not including the horns
10:52 on top of their head.
10:54 You don't get to be this big without being a quick thinker, especially on a deadly savannah.
10:59 You'd think something so big and lumbering would be an easy catch, right?
11:02 Well, you'd be wrong.
11:03 This water buffalo was quick enough to not only dodge a lion, but the crocodile that
11:07 came after it.
11:09 Herbivores adapt quickly to their surroundings because the live means to think on your hooves
11:12 and keep moving no matter what.
11:14 This big guy seems to have gotten that memo.
11:18 7.
11:21 Water buffaloes are lucky enough to travel in herds, much like this guy.
11:24 When he was fending off his lion attack, he was backed up by other buffaloes, which helped
11:28 him escape.
11:29 A single buffalo might be easy enough for a lion to take down, but a whole herd is going
11:34 to be enough to take down any animal.
11:36 That's not even mentioning the dangerous horn situation they've got going on.
11:39 Chances are, you don't want to pick a fight with this big guy.
11:42 Try to get him alone and get out before his family comes to the rescue, if you have to.
11:48 6.
11:50 Hyenas are more of scavenger animals, similar in that way to the vulture.
11:53 Alone they'll go towards the meat on left-behind carcasses.
11:56 Hyenas rarely ever pick a fight, but if they see a wounded big cat, they're not above it.
12:01 Thinking back to what I said about the lion king earlier, I might have misspoken in this
12:05 respect.
12:06 They were right on the money.
12:08 Hyenas exist in the background, just waiting for their prey to drop dead, so they don't
12:13 have a way to fight back.
12:14 Are they cowards or the ultimate opportunists?
12:17 Sometimes you get the sea on the table's turn.
12:20 Hyenas generally go for carcasses and dead meat because they're the cleanup crew on the
12:23 savannah.
12:24 But if you get enough hyenas going all at once, they'll happily share a piece of live
12:28 meat if they can.
12:29 You have to imagine fresh meat probably tastes better.
12:32 This lioness got away, but things got out of hand real fast for her.
12:38 5.
12:39 Cheetahs are known to be very anxious, skittish creatures.
12:42 But hunger is hunger.
12:44 The family of cheetahs had likely not eaten for a while.
12:46 The hyena who approached them was just trigger-happy for his next meal, coming down a little bit
12:50 before they'll die.
12:51 Some quick thinking got the cheetah out of there safely, but this displays a strange
12:56 bout of bravery.
12:58 4.
13:00 Who in their right mind would mess with a rhino?
13:03 You might be asking yourself that, but in the wild it's more common than you think.
13:07 Rhinos are herbivores, like many others on this list, and the truth is they're armored
13:11 for a reason.
13:12 Tanks of the savannah, they've evolved into their suit of armor, between the horn and
13:16 their thick elephant-like skin.
13:19 But being herbivores do make them technically prey.
13:22 For a fearless predator, that is.
13:24 Just watch out for the horn.
13:26 If you give up before the fight is over, of course, you're never going to win.
13:29 The wildebeest knew they had an opening and took it as soon as they could.
13:32 Twice.
13:33 These lions must have thought they had this meal in the bag, but the game's not over until
13:37 all the meat is off the bones.
13:39 It seems like.
13:41 3.
13:42 Even as babies, rhinos know what they're doing.
13:45 This calf narrowly escapes his fate, getting away from the lion trying to pick up the runt
13:49 when they get separated.
13:50 But surprisingly agile and quick on his feet, he scampers off to safety.
13:55 2.
13:57 Elephants are massive.
13:58 You probably wouldn't mess with one, even if you're not aggressive.
14:02 There are so many things that could go wrong, and that's before the elephant even feels
14:05 threatened.
14:06 One of their massive feet could take down just about anything, especially a mass of
14:10 13,000 pounds and 10 feet tall.
14:13 Maybe with enough backup, a few lioness could take down a single elephant, if they have
14:17 ample time and preparation.
14:18 But these lions didn't see the force coming when they have to scramble away from the aggressive
14:23 elephant.
14:24 All they wanted was her baby, and they couldn't find a way in.
14:26 I guess she's a bit justified in the aggression, in that case.
14:31 1.
14:32 This one lioness thought she had it in the bag, trying to feed her cubs, when this elephant
14:36 would have made an excellent prize meal.
14:38 The safest place she could be is right on the face, like she knows.
14:42 But when the elephant gets the lioness off its face, it's all over.
14:46 The elephant has strength and size on its side.
14:49 No surprise, then there's very little lioness it can do before escaping.
15:01 And that's a wrap on 30 times animals gave a tough time to big cats.
15:05 What do you think about these unexpected attacks?
