00:00 - Can you please tell the jury why you're here today?
00:03 - Ms. Hurd accused me of abuse.
00:06 - My ex-husband is suing me.
00:08 - Brutal, cruel.
00:10 - This is humiliating for any human being to go through.
00:13 - And all false.
00:16 - Johnny Depp and Amber Hurd's defamation trial
00:19 is being re-examined in a new docu-series on Netflix
00:22 a little over a year after the case
00:24 captivated people all over the world.
00:27 In a newly released first look
00:28 of the upcoming three-part docu-series,
00:31 it shows how the trial captured so much attention
00:33 through social media platforms
00:35 by having cameras in the courtroom.
00:37 - Amber Hurd forever changed Mr. Depp's life and reputation.
00:42 - Behind the fame,
00:43 you're gonna see who the real Johnny Depp is.
00:45 - Depp was the one who wanted the cameras in the courtroom.
00:49 She didn't.
00:49 - I would argue it's a PR campaign
00:51 disguised as a defamation case.
00:53 - It was the man himself.
00:54 - It's been a social media circus of commentary
00:56 from creators and influencers.
00:58 - Did you commit any kind of prank?
01:00 - Absolutely not.
01:01 - On my side of the bed was human fecal matter.
01:05 (coughing)
01:09 - This has moved away from a news story or a lawsuit.
01:14 And it's transformed into a cultural moment.
01:18 - People are live tweeting.
01:20 People are live streaming.
01:22 Where does it end?
01:23 - The engagement is phenomenal.
01:27 - My videos can be very easily manipulated and republished.
01:30 - We're being influenced by bots interacting with bots.
01:34 - Johnny Depp is clearly winning right now
01:35 in the court of public opinion.
01:37 - I've never been so scared in my life.
01:40 - She's acting.
01:42 - This trial is about so much more
01:45 than Johnny Depp versus Amber Hurd.
01:47 - Why are we all so fascinated with this case?
01:49 Because they're famous, because of the details.
01:52 - What did the jury see?
01:53 - It just kicked me.
01:55 - It didn't happen.
01:56 - I don't know who to believe.
01:57 - I (beep) was hitting you.
01:59 - Ms. Hurd, Mr. Depp is your victim, isn't he?
02:01 - This is not so much about the legal merit,
02:06 but rather what the public perception is.
02:09 - And that leads us to the real question,
02:11 which is what is the actual truth?
02:15 - "Depp vs. Hurd" was directed by Emma Cooper,
02:22 who made Netflix's 2022 documentary,
02:24 "The Mystery of Marilyn Monroe, The UnHurd Tapes."
02:27 Since the trial,
02:28 there have been several documentaries about the case,
02:31 plus a to be original movie titled "Hot Take,
02:34 The Depp-Hurd Trial."
02:35 The pair's heated defamation case wrapped up last year,
02:38 and a settlement was announced on December, 2022.
02:42 A jury sided with Johnny's claim
02:44 that the "Aquaman" actress had defamed him
02:46 in a 2018 Washington Post op-ed,
02:48 in which she described herself as a quote,
02:50 "public figure representing domestic abuse,"
02:53 but did not mention her ex-husband by name.
02:56 Johnny was awarded more than $10 million in damages,
02:59 while Amber was awarded $2 million in damages
03:02 in her defamation countersuit.
03:04 Access Hollywood chatted with the "Pirates of the Caribbean"
03:06 actor's lawyer, Camille Vasquez, following the verdict,
03:10 and she shared what it was like working with the movie star.
03:13 - First of all, congratulations.
03:15 I was so pleasantly surprised to see a young Latina
03:21 chosen to take on this case
03:24 that was gonna get major headlines and so much attention.
03:28 And I should have started off with,
03:30 congratulations on being named a partner.
03:32 - Thank you. - In the law firm right there.
03:33 - Thank you very much. - Yes, exactly.
03:35 That deserves a little, yeah.
03:37 How does that all feel right now?
03:40 - It's been an honor to represent women,
03:44 to represent Latina women,
03:47 and just be famous for doing a good job.
03:51 - What's it like now dealing with
03:53 this newfound fame and attention?
03:54 - You know, I just focus on the work.
03:57 I'm a lawyer at the end of the day.
03:59 I'm a lawyer, my life has changed,
04:02 but in a lot of respects it hasn't.
04:04 I'm still one of two girls and very close to my parents.
04:08 My mother is here with me today.
04:10 - Love that.
04:11 - I come to Los Angeles often.
04:13 My sister is a mom and has my niece,
04:17 who is a piece of my heart,
04:19 and I love her more than anything.
04:21 My life has changed, but it also hasn't.
04:25 You know, I'm just a lawyer that's doing her job
04:28 and representing her clients in an advocate forward way.
04:33 - You mentioned trial, and I know Amber Heard
04:35 has done sit-downs recently about the trial,
04:38 which just as an outsider, it seems confusing
04:40 because wasn't the whole point about the defamation
04:42 and isn't she sort of going down that same road again?
04:46 - I think that the verdict speaks for itself, right?
04:51 This was about Johnny getting up on the stand,
04:55 telling his story, and telling the truth
04:58 about what happened in that relationship,
05:00 and I think he did that,
05:01 and unanimously the verdict was he was defamed.
05:06 - And you'll continue to work with him if needed, correct?
05:09 - Absolutely.
05:09 We have another potential trial coming up in July.
05:13 - And was it always in this particular space,
05:15 criminal law, that you wanted to get into?
05:16 Because there's obviously so many different areas of law.
05:19 Was that always the area you wanted to work in?
05:21 - I mean, yes and no.
05:23 This had a criminal element to it, this trial did,
05:25 but it was obviously at the heart of it.
05:28 It was a defamation case, right?
05:30 It was about your name and Johnny's name in particular
05:33 and his reputation and what that means.
05:37 You know, to me, it's important in a defamation matter
05:40 to make the jury understand that this affects
05:44 all aspects of someone's life.
05:46 And yes, we were talking about a big life.
05:48 We were talking about Johnny Depp and a lot of money,
05:51 but it could be your life, and it affects your job,
05:54 your family, your friends.
05:56 It's your name.
05:57 - Right.
05:58 - It's what you have.
05:59 - That's right.
06:00 - It takes someone really brave and courageous to say,
06:03 you know, I've been defamed and I'm going to bring
06:06 an action to put a stop to this.
06:08 - Hmm.
06:09 - And I think Johnny did that.
