00:00 I mean, we would tell your parents to shop at nicer places, but your mom is so poor she
00:03 can't even pay attention.
00:06 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the top 20 times South
00:11 Park characters roasted each other.
00:13 "Butters, where did you get that kind of smart mouth?"
00:16 For this list, we'll be looking at wisecracks, insults, jabs, and other great pot shots aimed
00:21 at fellow characters from this show.
00:24 We're only including roasts aimed at specific individuals and excluding insults towards
00:29 celebrities as well as from the feature-length movie.

00:48 Number 20.
00:51 Cartman's mom laughs at the boys' insults.
00:55 It's all too common for good friends to rib each other all in good fun, but on more than
01:00 one occasion, as we'll come to see, Cartman has been the butt of the joke.
01:05 And as much as his mom thinks he's the perfect little boy, even she succumbs to laughter once
01:10 in a while.
01:12 Such was the case during season 3's Halloween-themed episode.
01:16 After claiming Eric isn't fat, just big-boned, Kyle comes around with a real zinger that
01:21 puts Leigh-Anne in stitches.
01:26 As often as she comes to his defense, we love seeing her join in on the laughter.
01:36 Number 19.
01:37 Kyle calls Stan a Cartman.
01:40 Despite the occasional ups and downs of South Park, two characters have remained the best
01:44 of friends throughout the show's run, Stan and Kyle.
01:48 Yet during season 19's ad story, Stan becomes suspicious of Kyle and the two end up in a
01:54 heated argument in the cafeteria.
02:03 With Butters, Kenny and Cartman all watching, Kyle turns the dial up to 11 by comparing
02:08 Stan to Cartman, to which Eric responds with "Hood as love."
02:13 From there, we're treated to Stan literally sounding like Cartman as a fistfight breaks
02:18 out.
02:19 Not only is the insult a low blow for Kyle, but the fact that Cartman agrees with him
02:23 makes it even better.
02:24 Number 18.
02:26 Butters torches the Goths.
02:28 When Stan and Butters both have their hearts broken, we get to watch how two very different
02:32 characters deal with breakups.
02:34 Stan joins the Goth kids and talks about pain all day, where Butters accepts the reality
02:40 that sometimes bad things just happen.
02:43 So when Stan and the Goths find him crying on the street, Michael, yes, that is the tall
02:48 Goth kid's name, offers to let Butters join their gang.
02:56 And just as he always is, Butters is ever so polite as he declines but manages to get
03:01 a fantastic, albeit highly inappropriate jab at Stan's new friends.
03:06 It's a surprise roast after such a heartfelt confession from the sweetest kid in town.
03:14 Number 17.
03:15 Butters goes after everyone.
03:18 Speaking of Butters, did you know he's Hawaiian?
03:21 Neither did we until he went full-on Hulk against his classmates.
03:31 Forever depicted as the nicest and most innocent character in town, he beats up a fellow classmate
03:36 apparently for no reason.
03:38 When the boy tries to talk to him, we get one of the best teardowns the show has ever
03:43 seen.
03:50 He rips into Kyle, Stan, Cartman, and even Jimmy in a back-and-forth hallway rant.
03:55 He even rhetorically tells his dad to shove it when hauled into the principal's office.
04:01 We love angry Butters.
04:03 But we also love how even when he's berating people, he never uses even the smallest piece
04:08 of profanity.
04:09 How considerate.
04:11 Number 16.
04:12 Cartman and people who are less fortunate.
04:15 For those who've watched the show long enough, you'll know how often Cartman makes fun
04:19 of poor people.
04:21 It started as far back in season one when he cracked jokes about Kenny's family living
04:25 in a cardboard box.
04:27 Since then, he's made countless jabs at Kenny's expense, only to find himself in
04:31 a similar situation.
04:33 Season 15's The Poor Kid gives audiences countless cracks about people in financial
04:38 distress, but with a twist.
04:46 With Kenny's family in foster care, Eric is now the poor kid in town.
04:51 And how does he cope with it?
04:53 By relentlessly mocking himself until he can find a new target.
04:56 It's entertaining to hear him faux insult himself and his mom.
05:00 While we all know he has something else in mind.
05:10 Number 15.
05:12 Cartman roasting the nanny.
05:14 The first mistake Leigh-Anne made was thinking a reality TV nanny was going to tame Cartman
05:19 down.
05:25 The next one was thinking Eric was ever going to be even remotely civil to her.
05:30 After the nanny takes his Xbox, he insults her, spits in her mouth and keeps on trucking.
05:35 Yet it's when she starts her heart to heart that we really see how bad Cartman can get.
05:45 What starts as a polite conversation between them quickly nosedives as Eric quietly roasts
05:50 her social and maternal relationships to the point where she's disgusted and leaves.
05:56 No wonder it took a dog trainer to get him under control.
05:59 Number 14.
06:00 "Screw you guys, I'm going home."
06:02 Okay, so we know this is more of a catchphrase than a roast, but come on.
06:07 In the earlier days of South Park, Cartman would often utter this phrase as a way of
06:11 flipping off just about anyone.
06:13 Whether it was his friends, the teachers, or even Jennifer Aniston's Miss Stevens.
06:23 When Eric has had enough, he blows them off with one simple sentence, turns his back,
06:28 and is on his way.
06:30 Far more polite than some of the other entries on this list.
06:33 It cuts through everything else and just gets to the point.
06:36 "Screw you guys, we love this roast."
06:39 "Okay, that does it.
06:40 Screw you guys, I'm going home."
06:42 Number 13.
06:43 "Girls Volleyball."
06:44 Sometimes, a good jab is a finely crafted joke that builds up over the course of a conversation.
06:52 Then just at the right moment, you deliver the punchline and all the waiting becomes
06:56 worth it.
06:57 Other times, we're presented with a fast quip that comes out of nowhere and surprises
07:02 everyone.
07:03 The latter was the case when Stan poked fun at girls volleyball, giving Cartman and the
07:07 other boys a great laugh.
07:14 What makes this even better, however, is Stan's reaction when he realizes his girlfriend Wendy
07:19 is the butt of the joke.
07:21 Looks like Stan forgot the golden rule of comedy, "Know your audience."
07:30 Number 12.
07:31 "Butters and Sports."
07:33 Butters doesn't get football, and he tells this to his friends, proclaiming that's
07:38 why he's terrible at playing it.
07:40 In a quick retort, Stan makes it clear that Butters just outright sucks at all sports.
07:50 This alone is a fantastic little jab, but it's Stotch's comeback that we never saw
07:56 coming.
07:57 Unlike how other characters would react, Butters agrees with Stan and makes the insult even
08:02 worse.
08:03 Clearly oblivious to its real meaning, he refers to Cartman's suggestion about working
08:08 in a massage parlor.
08:10 It's one thing to get roasted by a friend, but something else entirely when you pile
08:14 on with him.
08:16 Number 11.
08:17 "Kyle Insults His Mother."
08:19 What would you do to sustain peace in the Middle East?
08:22 When a prank of Cartman's inadvertently unites Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, Kyle
08:27 is forced to endure whatever Eric wants of him all in the name of peace.
08:33 So when Cartman asks him to insult Sheila to her face, poor Kyle has to face his worst
08:38 fear.
08:39 Not only does he already have issues standing up to his mother, but now he has to rag on
08:43 her at Cartman's whim.
08:51 Kyle drops some pretty brutal descriptive language about his mother.
09:00 It's not just funny, but we can't help but wonder if after everything she's put him through,
09:05 somehow Kyle actually enjoyed the rare moment.
09:10 Number 10.
09:11 "I Wish Jaden Smith Was My Son."
09:14 If you were to pick the most random insult to say to your own kid, this line is the last
09:18 thing anyone would have ever thought of.
09:21 The whole thing comes from the fact that Stan has locked out all of the true crime programming
09:26 on television with a code his parents can't figure out.
09:29 Randy shows up at Stan's door, begging him to give him the answers.
09:33 All while trying to explain why these crime shows aren't harmful.
09:42 Only someone like Stan's father could come up with the most ridiculous of insults.
09:46 All in the name of wanting to watch documentary TV.
09:53 Number 9.
09:54 "Butters Roasting His Grandma."
09:57 Butters roasts his grandmother in an episode called "Butterballs."
10:00 Is it just us, or does anyone else smell turkey?
10:03 Either way, our beloved stocks boy once again shows how he's probably one of the most
10:07 profound children in this town.
10:10 After having been repeatedly assaulted both physically and psychologically by his grandmother,
10:15 Butters finally gets his say.
10:17 Thinking she's asleep, Butters delivers a brutal but chillingly truthful takedown of
10:22 his grandmother's actions.
10:32 As he describes how she's eventually going to die angry at the world, Butters will still
10:37 be there.
10:38 It strikes fear into her eyes with nothing more than the real, unadulterated truth.
10:53 Number 8.
10:54 "Stan's Band Moop."
10:56 Take four nine-year-olds with no real musical talent and throw them in a band.
11:00 Unless you've got some prodigies in there, odds are you're not going to hear Grammy-worthy
11:05 music without some practice.
11:07 Such was the case for Stan, Kenny, Kyle and Cartman with their band, Moop.
11:13 Like other kids their age, they just want to play and have fun.
11:16 So when Randy hears all the racket, instead of trying to help or support their efforts,
11:21 all they get is a sarcastic retort.
11:32 Suggesting that the sounds of human torture were comparable to Moop's music, however,
11:37 might be going a little too far.
11:39 Number 7.
11:40 "Something to Suck On."
11:42 Eric has been using this catchphrase as a means of insulting anyone who crossed his
11:46 path unfavorably.
11:48 He said it to Garrison in the movie.
11:50 He spouted it off to his impersonator when he tried to extort him for more money.
11:54 He even tries the line on his new teacher, only to have her respond in a positive nature,
11:59 shocking both him and the rest of the class.
12:09 What makes this a great roast is how Cartman seems to find new and interesting ways to
12:13 deliver it to those who have it coming.
12:15 Number 6.
12:16 "A Large Beehive."
12:18 Having won a contest, Cartman's going to appear on TV along with Kathie Lee Gifford.
12:27 Wanting to get in shape, he starts eating copious amounts of a bodybuilding supplement,
12:31 triggering massive weight gain.
12:33 Eric is of course proud of how bulky he's become, but Kyle isn't having any of it.
12:41 While first referring to him as a "wide load", it's what follows next that's
12:45 the real burn.
12:46 Inspired by a scene from the original "The Spirit of Christmas" short, Kyle insinuates
12:51 that casual pedestrians would exclaim profanities at him for being so large.
13:02 Not only is it funny, but it's a great nod to the original.
13:07 Number 5.
13:08 "Christmas Ham."
13:09 Fun fact, George Clooney apparently sent out hundreds of copies of the original South Park
13:14 short "The Spirit of Christmas".
13:24 Not only did this short serve as the inspiration for our previous entry, but it also gave us
13:29 another awesome burn at Cartman's expense.
13:32 Just as Stan is trying to deliver his speech about the true meaning of Christmas, Eric
13:36 piles on and insists it's all about ham.
13:39 Without even blinking, Stan yells back at him reciting the exact same insult Kyle had
13:43 used earlier.
13:45 It's yet another variation on a standing theme around Eric, but that doesn't make
13:53 it any less of a jab.
13:55 Number 4.
13:56 "Sand in Places."
13:57 Have you ever been to a beach and returned home only to feel like you've brought all
14:03 the sand back with you?
14:04 Depending on where it sticks, you can find yourself itchy, scratching, or even outright
14:09 irritated at it getting everywhere.
14:15 This becomes a running gag throughout the South Park season 5 premiere, as Cartman blames
14:20 Kyle's recent irritability on him having sand stuck somewhere.
14:25 Each time Eric delivers the line, Kyle becomes even more infuriated, spurring Cartman to
14:30 come up with even better ways to make the roast cook.
14:47 Number 3.
14:48 "Cartman's Butters Impression."
14:51 An otherwise middle-of-the-road episode, fans are treated to one of the best moments
14:55 of the entire series.
14:57 After being grounded for having illegal liposuction, Butters sneaks out with the boys while Cartman
15:01 promises to impersonate him if his parents call.
15:10 Inevitably, they do, and Cartman, as Butters, delivers what is arguably the funniest impersonated
15:16 lines of dialogue ever spoken on the show.
15:21 Butters' dad gets a roaring insult about his sexuality and bodily functions, while
15:26 he implies Linda enjoys the company of livestock.
15:29 The crudeness of the insults is one thing, but when delivered as faux Butters, it brings
15:34 the laugh to a whole new level.
15:42 Number 2.
15:43 "Leanne's Magazine Appearance."
15:46 It's Halloween time in South Park, and Kyle is arguing with Cartman about him having dressed
15:51 up as Hitler.
15:55 As the two exchange insults, Kyle makes a rather disparaging remark about Cartman's
16:00 mother being on the cover of an adult-themed publication.
16:04 Kids poking fun at each other's moms is nothing new, but Cartman is taken aback by
16:08 the insult.
16:09 If that had been it, the crack would have been funny enough.
16:13 But the real punchline comes later, when the boys end up at the morgue.
16:17 Kyle finds an adult magazine featuring Leanne Cartman on the cover.
16:25 Cut, game, and match.
16:43 Number 1.
16:44 "Larger Than Life."
16:46 For a film that is barely over five minutes long, it certainly has its own share of quotable
16:51 moments.
16:56 Serving as the inspiration for our number six entry, the original replaces much of the
17:01 TV-friendly dialogue for words we won't repeat here.
17:05 We get to see the first inklings of the ongoing feud between Cartman and Kyle.
17:09 Using language unfit for an eight-year-old, Kyle claims passerby's would be shocked at
17:14 how large Cartman is.
17:20 It's our number one, not just because it's funny, but because it was the first of so
17:24 many roasts the show would come to be known for.
17:35 "Larger Than Life" is available now.
