00:42 not to comment on the fact that Scotland's really good in recent form.

00:52 You're closing in on the 100th cap against Finland.
00:54 How good was it to be back with us, Bob?
00:56 Yeah, yeah.
00:57 Nah, it was amazing.
00:59 Honestly, I didn't expect to call it for one either, because I was enjoying summer holidays.
01:04 I think the camp was starting on the Monday.
01:06 Pedro gave me a shout on the Saturday night, which I then got, because I think it was like 10 past 10 he called.
01:11 I didn't see it until the morning.
01:13 So he was like, yeah, there's been an injury, we want you to come back into camp.
01:17 So I was like, right, sounds like, I'd obviously been training loads, doing loads of running stuff.
01:23 I didn't expect to be back on the balls, but nah, it was so nice being back.
01:26 I loved it.
01:27 And even to get minutes and stuff.
01:29 It was just class.
01:30 I love the girls and I love the squad.
01:33 I was actually amazed at just even not being there for the last two camps, the level that went through the roof.
01:39 Considering everyone had time off and stuff, that was by far the best camp that I've ever been a part of on the national team.
01:46 Just in terms of the girls doing exactly what the coaches wanted, taking on board what they're saying.
01:52 And then finally, you're seeing the results of that.
01:56 Pedro and his staff obviously have a very specific style of playing.
02:00 I think it's probably taken us a bit longer to get to grips with it than we would have liked.
02:04 But I think you're now finally seeing the results of that.
02:07 In the last few games, the results, as you said.
02:10 But yeah, nah, the camp was amazing and it was so nice to be back.
02:13 It really was.
02:14 Obviously, the 100th cap is approaching.
02:16 Is that something that's on your mind?
02:18 It's a big milestone, isn't it?
02:20 I think so, yeah.
02:21 Obviously, it's amazing for anyone to reach 100 caps.
02:24 It's obviously in the back of my mind, but it's not the be all and end all.
02:29 Like I said, I'll take it.
02:31 Every camp that I can be involved in, it's just an opportunity to show Pedro that I want to be there and think I deserve to be there.
02:39 It was just nice to get the opportunity, even though it came as a surprise.
02:43 But yeah, it was amazing.
02:45 Obviously, looking at the World Cup, I know it's annoying for yourself.
02:48 I know for a lot of people, it's sort of unfair that Scotland aren't there.
02:51 I think it's annoying for me and many people.
02:53 But obviously, you were there in 2019.
02:55 That felt like, when I look back, the tournament itself, it shone like a huge light on the women's game.
02:59 It felt like it changed an awful lot.
03:01 And it hasn't really looked back, although there's things that need to change.
03:04 It did an awful lot for it.
03:06 I'm kind of curious as to you being part of that World Cup in 2019, what can this tournament in 2003 do for the women's game?
03:12 And how do you think this World Cup is going to be remembered?
03:15 It's always going to be remembered as that one that really broke things and started really throwing stuff forward.
03:21 But what can 2003 be?
03:24 2023, even.
03:25 I think you've seen it.
03:27 The fan experiences, I think, seeing that amount of the attendances in the stadiums has been incredible.
03:33 And I think also just, I think our first World Cup, obviously, was pretty predictable, I think,
03:38 and the teams that were getting out of the groups.
03:40 But now you can see everyone's capability and everyone.
03:42 You can really see the development and the steps that the smaller nations, I say smaller nations,
03:48 but the ones that you'd not written off before, but you'd give them less of a chance of getting through.
03:53 And now it's like dog eat dog.
03:54 I think if you're not at the level, these teams can pick you off.
03:59 And you've seen that in the group stages, which obviously just makes it more competitive for the neutral watch.
04:04 I've really enjoyed seeing the, as I said, the smaller teams or the lower ranked teams doing really well.
04:13 The likes of Colombia the other day against Germany.
04:15 You just love seeing that as a neutral.
04:17 It's been absolute class.
04:18 And I think that's probably the biggest thing that I've taken from this World Cup is just the development of those lower ranked teams.
04:25 They're catching teams up and you can see that.
04:28 I can't remember who said it, but someone the other day was saying that a lot of these results of the,
04:33 as we'll say, quote unquote, smaller teams or lower ranked teams or teams that weren't getting results in previous tournaments has come from a lot of their players moving to professional since the last World Cup.
04:42 Yeah, no, I did see that as well.
04:44 I can't remember who said it, but it's a really good comment, isn't it?
04:46 I think it's pretty fair to say.
04:49 I mean, without a doubt, like if you're training day in, day out, you've got like the best resources, you're training with the best players in that country,
04:56 you're going to get better and that's in turn going to help the national team, of course.
04:59 No doubt about it. Obviously at the time of speaking, we're approaching the end of the group stages.
05:03 We've seen Canada surprisingly go home today, Republic of Ireland have obviously gone, the co-hosts of New Zealand have gone as well.
05:09 But which teams have impressed you most in the group stages?
05:12 Because there's so many, like Norway found a return to form, Colombia against Germany the other day, Japan.
05:16 There's so many teams. Yeah, honestly, the two teams you mentioned there, Colombia, Japan, obviously we've got two of the Japanese girls.
05:24 We've also got Yui who was at us, as you know, the end of last pre-season.
05:29 But no, I'm really, I'm rooting for Japan to be fair.
05:32 I think they've obviously started playing a different style of play that you saw today.
05:35 Like that was one game that I did manage to watch.
05:37 But even against, was it Zambia they played in the first game?
05:42 Yeah, just the way that they played, like obviously in kind of like this deep block, not allowing any space in behind them,
05:49 it's been really effective and they've played a different style.
05:51 I don't know, it's probably not one that they're familiar to playing, but it's been really effective and fair play.
05:56 I think they've probably impressed me, impressed me the most.
05:58 And when you look at Japan, I read a stat today, don't quote me on it because I'm not a stats person,
06:02 but they only spent, I think it was the first half, 27 seconds in the Spanish box, three goals.
06:07 That's insane. Yeah, clinical.
06:10 And honestly, like nine times out of 10, like you wouldn't take all those three chances, but they've done it.
06:15 They've been absolutely ruthless when they've had the chances.
06:17 And no, it was so good.
06:20 So, so good. I mean, you've obviously got a bit of luck.
06:22 Was it the second goal that was a deflection, kind of chipped over the keeper?
06:25 Or the third, I can't remember.
06:27 But obviously kind of Spain have had their own issues coming into the tournament as well.
06:31 So it will be interesting to see, yeah, in terms of what happens to them the next few rounds if they get through.
06:38 But no, like I said, I'm really rooting for Japan and I was delighted that they beat Spain.
06:42 Absolutely. I think when you look over the last few games, like I said, we're speaking on Monday for people listening to this.
06:46 So last few days, like I say, Norway have kind of found their return to form 6-0.
06:50 Colombia, Schalke, Germany, Japan doing what they do.
06:54 And obviously with your training, getting back into pre-season, you won't have catched every game.
06:58 But which games have you caught and what's been kind of your favourite games to watch so far?
07:03 I watched the Columbia, Germany game the other day, as I said, like that, I think for me was the game in the tournament so far that I've seen.
07:11 Anyway, like I said, I've not been able to watch that many or as many as I would have liked to have.
07:17 But yeah, no, that for me was unreal.
07:21 Just like obviously the last kind of 10 minutes of the game, it was like first half was maybe a bit scrappy,
07:26 but I just thought Colombia did so well physically.
07:29 We obviously knew what they were about in terms of reading all the articles and stuff with Ireland and camp in that game.
07:35 I've kind of expected them to be a bit rough and ready.
07:39 But honestly, like physicality, but also just the actual technique on the ball,
07:43 like the short passes, the kind of style of football that they played, very confident.
07:47 And it's funny because at the last camp we were speaking to Kaka about this wee kid, Linda,
07:53 and she was speaking about her like, oh, Colombia's got this ball or she plays a fuss.
07:57 I'm not sure she'll play every game, but like, yeah, she's really big talent.
08:01 And it's funny because she obviously first two games, two man in the matches and two goals.
08:07 So yeah, it's class.
08:09 I love how you called her Kaka, Caroline Waif to the rest of us.
08:13 You touched on Linda Casedo there.
08:16 I think every tournament has a story and it tends to be like a young up and comer,
08:21 but it's not just the fact that how good she was, obviously she's at Real Madrid.
08:25 I think diagnosed with cancer two years ago, scored a wonder goal.
08:29 Katie McCabe might disagree, but arguably a wonder goal and called her to the tournament.
08:33 But it's her story and from what you've seen, how good can she be?
08:37 She's just 18, she's at Real Madrid and Caroline Waif is already talking about her.
08:41 Yeah, no, unreal.
08:43 I think she's in the best place as well in terms of Real Madrid's scouting system.
08:46 They've done so well to land a player like that.
08:49 And obviously that's the fun thing about World Cups,
08:52 it can make players like that into an even bigger and better player.
08:56 It's amazing to see her whole story.
08:59 The fact that she collapsed in training and then she's back in,
09:02 she's playing in the starting XI again.
09:05 It must be so much for her, 18 years old, but also at the same time,
09:08 maybe she's thinking, no pressure on me and do my thing.
09:12 It's just good to see, sometimes young players, like I said,
09:14 they've got less pressure on them.
09:15 They can just go out and perform and not think too much about it.
09:20 Missed those days, to be fair, but it was class.
09:22 You love seeing that and you love the story behind it, obviously.
09:26 The cancer diagnosis and then off the back of that,
09:29 coming back and absolutely smashing up the World Cup with Colombia.
09:32 It's amazing. That's what you love, don't you, about football?
09:34 Right to the headlines and obviously what makes people happy, absolutely, 100%.
09:38 I think, you know, I talked to Kirsty Hansen on the show last week
09:41 and I think in the Euros it felt like Spain or England were the big favourites.
09:46 As it was, Spain got knocked out by England, narrowly.
09:49 The game could have went either way, England won it,
09:51 and then the Germans kind of crept up.
09:52 The previous World Cups, you've gone, well, America,
09:55 you've had a couple of dark horses, but in this tournament,
09:57 you've got England, not impressive at the moment,
09:59 I'll admit if they say that, but we're trucking along.
10:01 Germany, outstanding in their opening game, then they've lost.
10:04 France, draw with Jamaica, then they beat Brazil.
10:07 America haven't looked as all-encompassing as they normally do,
10:10 but they still have something in their locker.
10:12 Holland, getting a draw with America, Holland are still kind of there.
10:15 Norway now finding form.
10:17 How open is this tournament in comparison to previous tournaments?
10:22 It is, it really is.
10:25 Exactly like you said, normally, USA, you just expect to go through,
10:28 nine points, done and dusted.
10:31 It's so exciting, I love it.
10:33 Like I said, it's obviously good for the neutral.
10:35 I would have loved to have been there with Scotland,
10:37 but it's been amazing.
10:39 Everyone's just capable of beating everyone, that's what you want.
10:43 I think that's been a real difference, this World Cup, no doubt about it.
10:48 It's made it really, really interesting.
10:50 No one really has an idea who's quite going to win it,
10:53 but I'm going to pin you down to a, at the moment,
10:56 I think it's a guess, I said Spain, but maybe I'm wrong.
10:58 After today, I thought I was going to be right, maybe I'm wrong.
11:01 If you were to tip a team at this moment in time,
11:03 which is pretty difficult, who would you be plumping for?
11:07 I did say Germany before the tournament.
11:10 I just think they impressed me already at the Euros.
11:14 I think, apart from England, really, obviously, who impressed, they won it.
11:19 They were the next best team, and I thought they were pretty unlucky in the final.
11:22 Obviously, there was a few decisions that went against them.
11:24 They didn't have Pop playing, obviously a massive loss.
11:27 I just thought, maybe it'll be their turn.
11:30 They've got loads of experienced players,
11:33 but they've also got a young squad, got a good manager.
11:36 I thought, the Germans are always good, tournament football, they're always good, why not?
11:40 I still think they'll be up there,
11:42 but it was interesting the other day against Colombia,
11:45 because they didn't play that well.
11:47 Japan, again, like I said, they've impressed me so much.
11:52 I didn't really know much about them before going into the tournament.
11:55 Obviously, I know Risan, I know Honon,
11:58 I know the way that they like playing football, and Yui.
12:01 To even see them playing the way that they have been playing,
12:04 I feel like they are quite adaptable.
12:06 They can play tiki-taka, possession-based football,
12:08 but they can also, are quite happy to sit in a low block,
12:11 play longer balls, and hit teams on the counter-attack,
12:13 which I haven't ever seen that side of Japan before.
12:15 I feel like that in itself really speaks volumes,
12:19 that they're very adaptable, and I think they'll need that throughout the tournament,
12:22 the more that they progress.
12:24 Definitely those two, and obviously USA as well.
12:29 You can never write them off, can you?
12:31 I think their front three that started the first two games, unbelievable.
12:36 I'd probably say USA. Nothing really exciting.
12:40 To be fair, I said at the start, Rapinoe's last tournament,
12:44 I feel like she's got something to write in this tournament,
12:46 whether it's winning it or not.
12:48 Look at Australia, who were great today,
12:50 obviously not too great in the previous games.
12:52 Although they were alright against Warwick of Ireland,
12:54 but I think that's a tough team to play against.
12:56 But Sam Curze, due to come back, and that changes everything, I suppose.
12:59 But I think, like I said before, we're speaking on the Monday,
13:02 so it's not too long after that Japan game,
13:04 and I think I'd be wrong if I didn't speak about Yui Hasegawa
13:08 and the players that he played with, because I'm a huge Yui Hasegawa fan.
13:11 Anyone who knows me knows I'm a huge, huge fan.
13:14 Signed his name at TACCA midfield,
13:15 Eiffelman City now plays in the deep line role,
13:17 and it's just tremendous.
13:20 They've been unbelievable in the tournament so far,
13:22 and they've gone from being someone who you went,
13:24 "Oh, well, fair enough, they're doing alright,"
13:25 to all of a sudden, "Well, hang on, they've won it before,
13:27 there's a bit of experience there, they've played two different ways.
13:29 They've played defensively, they've played offensively,
13:31 they can do both things."
13:32 They've won it before.
13:34 How much do you rate the chances of,
13:37 or how far do you think they can realistically go?
13:39 Can they get all the way to the final, do you think?
13:42 I think so, yeah.
13:43 I think probably the only thing I would potentially say
13:46 is maybe the physicality side of things.
13:47 I know there's more physically strong teams than what Japan would be,
13:50 and I think that's a lot of people's argument,
13:53 but at the same time, they've dealt with everything that's come their way.
13:56 Arguably, Spain, one of the best teams in the tournament,
13:58 they've just wiped them aside today.
14:03 So, yeah, it will be interesting.
14:05 I feel like they just really look like they gel together,
14:08 the team just looks tactically so organised, so well set up.
14:12 And yeah, I would say Japan.
14:14 I don't see why not.
14:16 Yeah, I feel the same way, to be honest.
14:17 I wanted to ask you about Yui and obviously the girls that you play with.
14:21 Yui's had a massive season for Man City.
14:23 I think gone under the radar, if I'm completely honest,
14:25 I was really surprised she wasn't up there for Player of the Year.
14:28 I know there's a lot of good players that were on there,
14:30 but really, really surprised at that.
14:32 You've worked with her on a day-to-day basis.
14:34 You've seen her talent on the training pitch.
14:36 How good is Yui Hasegawa?
14:38 Amazing. She's such a good player.
14:41 Nice girl as well.
14:43 She's such a nice kid, dead, dead nice, really professional.
14:47 But I think obviously it was difficult for her at West Ham
14:50 just in terms of the way that we wanted to play Oli harder at the time.
14:54 I feel like it was just hard in that team to play her football.
14:58 I knew making the move to Man City, she would absolutely fly.
15:02 And she has done.
15:03 I didn't expect her to be playing the Six, to be fair.
15:06 Even to be fair, in that pre-season we had before she left,
15:09 she basically went on the back of Keira Walsh's deal to Barca.
15:13 It was a chain reaction.
15:15 I remember us getting pulled into the meeting that day,
15:17 and it was like, "Yeah, we've decided to take a really good deal for Yui Hasegawa."
15:22 It's what she wanted.
15:23 When she came to West Ham, she was very open and honest.
15:25 Man City was her dream club.
15:27 She supports the club.
15:29 And she'd kind of seen West Ham as a stepping stone,
15:32 so fair play.
15:33 You've openly said that.
15:34 She turned up every week, always played well.
15:36 But I feel like she's really taken off now that she's went to Man City.
15:40 Honestly, I don't even think they were aware of how good she actually could be.
15:44 I think she's probably surprised a lot of people,
15:46 but we obviously saw it day in, day out at West Ham.
15:50 That pre-season before she left, she was scoring goals for fun,
15:54 taking on people.
15:55 She's such an intelligent, smart player.
15:57 You think playing as a No. 6 in WSL can be difficult physically.
16:01 You expect a big, strong, kind of like a Frida Manham or a Kim Little.
16:06 I know she's not the tallest, but she's really strong and robust.
16:09 But Yui's different to that.
16:11 She's just so intelligent and so good on the ball.
16:14 I think she fits to their methodology perfectly.
16:17 She's such a good player for that.
16:19 Yeah, she's amazing.
16:20 I think even Gareth Taylor, in the few times that I've spoke to him,
16:23 and asked him about Yui, which feels like every press conference,
16:25 if I'm honest, he's even sort of surprised him how quickly she's grown into the team
16:29 and how fast she's just instantly become one of their most important players.
16:33 I think that speaks to her talent.
16:35 I was sort of looking through other players that you've played with
16:37 that are at the World Cup, and I'll be honest, the list is quite long.
16:39 You've got even Izzy Atkinson.
16:41 Obviously, you've played with Katie McCabe, Caitlin Ford.
16:43 Yeah.
16:44 Tons of players.
16:45 Obviously, Caitlin was fantastic today against Canada.
16:47 Lia, obviously, for Switzerland.
16:50 Of all the players that you've obviously played with current and former teammates,
16:53 that'll mean you've watched those games and stuff like that.
16:56 Which players alongside those have stood out for you within the tournament?
16:59 Is there any player, and obviously, touch on Brenda Cassado previously,
17:02 but is there any player that you've watched and thought,
17:05 "Oh, wow, hang on a minute, there could be a player in the tournament."
17:07 I felt like that with Pop last year, but is there anyone that stood out for you particularly?
17:12 What, in this year's tournament?
17:14 Yeah.
17:15 I mean, I rate Oberdorf.
17:20 I've never played with her, so I don't know what she's like day in, day out,
17:22 but I rate her very, very highly, I think.
17:25 You could see it in the first game, obviously, she didn't play,
17:27 but even when Germany wasn't playing well,
17:29 I feel like she was the one that was getting the ball rolling,
17:31 getting the passes, trying to find just clever little balls through.
17:36 She was obviously the one then to win the penalty as well in the end.
17:40 So, yeah, I think Oberdorf's absolutely different gravy,
17:43 and I love that position, number six.
17:45 I feel like in modern-day football, it's such a pivotal position.
17:49 In the women's game, if you play with back four, back five, whatever,
17:53 everything goes through that number six.
17:55 You really need to trust them with the ball.
17:58 It's the same at our national team.
17:59 It's kind of the same principles.
18:00 Obviously, our midfield's as good as anyone's,
18:02 with Erin Kaka and Sam Kerner, who's playing at Bayern,
18:05 but it's just such a pivotal position.
18:08 Everything goes through that player, and you can see that as well with you,
18:11 yeah, Man City.
18:12 So, yeah, I'd probably say Oberdorf, but even playing with, like,
18:15 Lia Valdez, there's loads of players, even at Potsdam,
18:18 I played with so many that were, now at the World Cup,
18:21 like, some Adam Mioda and Ada Hegeberg,
18:25 although she's not played that much so far,
18:27 but it's so nice seeing everyone, like, and where they are at now,
18:31 in terms of, like, development and stuff,
18:32 because obviously I was at Potsdam, like, when I was young,
18:34 like, 19 years old, so it's just nice seeing everyone now on their journey
18:38 and what they're doing with their national team, so, yeah.
18:41 - Yeah, it's been a great tournament.
18:42 It's been fantastic.
18:43 I wanted to ask one more question before we've got a couple of fun questions,
18:46 which Georgia, my people will know, my normal co-host,
18:50 put together, they're a bit more fun than maybe mine are,
18:53 but talked about the number six role there and how important it is.
18:57 We don't know the extent of Kiera's injury yet for England,
19:01 but obviously it's better than expected, but still didn't look great.
19:04 How much do you think that can affect England's chances
19:07 if Kiera isn't able to play for the rest of the tournament?
19:11 - Yeah, massively.
19:12 We were talking about that at the time when it happened, obviously,
19:14 you never want to see anyone going down with any injury,
19:16 and I think her reaction, it does literally send shivers down your spine.
19:21 Just even the three words, or three letters get mentioned.
19:26 It's just not nice.
19:27 There's been too many, and obviously there's loads of research and stuff
19:30 that needs to be done to try and prevent those injuries,
19:33 but yeah, it's interesting for England.
19:35 They've obviously lost the spine of their team, we were saying.
19:38 Obviously, if Kiera's now injured for the rest of the tournament,
19:42 Leah Williamson obviously capped in the centre half.
19:46 Kiera, you've lost Frank Kirby and you lost Beth.
19:49 It is a major part of that team that won the Euros,
19:52 so I do wonder how much that will affect them.
19:56 I think so far, they obviously started the Euro tournament pretty slow as well.
19:59 I remember the first game against Austria, everyone was thinking,
20:02 "Oh, can't see England winning it," but it's not how you start the tournament.
20:07 As we know, I feel like Germany are a bit like that as well.
20:09 It's how you end it, and it's these knockout games that really will tell.
20:14 But yeah, if they can get a replacement in for Kiera,
20:17 which obviously she is irreplaceable in that team, she is,
20:21 but I guess it's up to Serena to try and compensate as much as she can
20:26 for that position, whether that be dropping down the two sixes
20:29 or whether she's putting Stanaway in there, putting Katie Zellm in there.
20:35 I know Katie Zellm's had a class season for Man U and that's a similar position.
20:40 It'll be interesting to see what she does.
20:42 Or she brings in Lauren Hemp back in and then Lauren James into the ten.
20:47 She's got loads of options. They've got such a good team.
20:50 I'm sure whatever she decides on, they'll still get decent results,
20:56 but it's going forward.
20:57 Yeah, absolutely. I think it's more of a testament to how good Kiera is
21:00 as opposed to not having the options, I guess,
21:02 which is just arguably alongside Oberdorff, who mentioned before,
21:05 the best defensive midfielder in the world, potentially at the minute.
21:08 Now, I said before, a bit of fun stuff.
21:11 These are normally set by my colleague, Georgia Golden.
21:13 I leave her with the fun questions because I'm only good at the semi-serious ones.
21:19 One rule, you're only allowed to use former or current teammates,

21:28 Who would you call to pick you up if your car broke down?
21:34 Well, I didn't actually – I called Emma Mitchell.
21:38 She lives quite close to me, but I actually crashed my car one day.
21:41 It's a crappy story. I'm not even going to go into it.
21:43 I don't even know how I managed to do it. Very stupid.
21:46 So, yeah, I phoned her, but I think I'd phone Mitchie in a lot of emergencies.
21:50 Mitchie is my best pal. She has been for years and years,
21:54 and I'd probably phone her in any kind of dire situation.
