How Freya Ridings transformed a painful childhood into musical success

Freya Ridings discusses how a love of music transformed her life, after being bullied as a child.  “I was completely ostracised and ridiculed at school because I was a strange child,” Freya told Love Lives’ Olivia Petter. “I just shut down and went into my shell and turned into a zombie version of myself.”  Freya opens up about finding acceptance and boosting her confidence when she discovered how to transform her pain into musical success through her songwriting. 00:00 I was a strange child, like I was, you know,

00:02 taller than all the other kids, I was red-haired,

00:04 like I was quite big as well,

00:05 I was just bigger than the other kids, you know, quite young.

00:08 And I think for me that made me such an outcast at school.

00:11 I'd just be completely like ostracized and like, ridiculed.

00:14 So I just kind of shut down and I went into my shell

00:16 and I became kind of like a zombie version of myself

00:19 at school and I wrote a song about people like,

00:21 being mean to me at school and like, leaving me out.

00:23 And that was the first time where I was like,

00:25 I felt like I'd turned something really inescapable

00:28 and painful into something like, good and like, beautiful.

00:32 There was a moment where this girl,

00:34 like the next school I went to was like,

00:36 like I was so like, left out and she was like,

00:39 everyone's freaking singing,

00:39 like they all like gathered around me

00:41 and I sang something and they were like, whoa.

00:42 It was like the first time I'd been treated

00:43 like a human being at school and I was like, yes.
