00:04 for travellers who hate crowds.

00:13 For this list we're looking at wide open spaces across the globe where you can avoid large crowds,
00:20 allowing you to peacefully travel alone or with a select few companions.
00:24 Rotorua, New Zealand
00:28 Known best for providing the backdrop for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies,
00:32 New Zealand is ripe with sweeping landscapes to explore.
00:35 If the path to Mordor is too mainstream for your tastes, why not venture to the North Island?
00:40 While there, you can satisfy your thirst for adventure in Rotorua.
00:44 This quaint city possesses a population of almost 58,000.
00:48 While not the busiest area by urban standards, it's the natural wonders that you'll want to escape to.
00:53 You might not stumble upon Mount Doom,
00:55 but you will notice how volcanic activity has impacted the land,
00:58 which is renowned for its commanding geysers and luxuriating hot mud pools.
01:03 Take a soothing dip in Tecatere, aka Hell's Gate.
01:06 Don't worry, it's not as hot as it sounds.
01:08 There's also ample room in the mud pools of Curau Park.
01:11 You'll get messy, but you'll leave rejuvenated.
01:14 Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona
01:17 Given its desert aesthetic, Arizona might seem like an unusual locale for a national park.
01:22 Not all parks flourish with green grass and skyrocketing trees, however.
01:26 Petrified Forest National Park is among the most hauntingly beautiful locales in the American West.
01:31 Engulfed in petrified wood, the park may seem bleak on the surface,
01:35 but that's kind of part of its charm.
01:37 The surrounding fossils and fallen trees give the area the sentiment of a land that time forgot,
01:42 almost as if you're stepping into an ancient wilderness.
01:44 There are glimpses of colour to be found in the Badlands,
01:47 which supply the park with the surreal nature of a Salvador Dali painting.
01:51 It's an ideal place to be alone with your thoughts, providing nearly 350 square miles to explore.
01:56 You won't have to worry about urban noise either,
01:58 as the nearest city, Holbrook, is over 25 miles away.
02:01 Huacachina, Peru
02:04 We all associate Peru with landmarks like Machu Picchu,
02:07 which might not seem very crowded based on the travel brochure.
02:10 Upon arriving though, you'll find that a ton of tourists have the same idea you did.
02:14 To beat the crowds, venture to one of Peru's best kept secrets, Huacachina.
02:18 With only about 100 locals, the village's name has been linked to a couple of different meanings,
02:23 such as "conceal" and "guard".
02:25 It's also believed to be a condensed translation of "hidden lagoon".
02:28 The terrain certainly reflects this,
02:30 being a humble oasis veiled within the surrounding sand dunes.
02:34 If you really want to get off the grid, you could go glamping in the neighbouring desert.
02:37 For those who want to see the heart of the village though,
02:40 the lake still offers a peaceful spot to unwind, whether you're on the coast or in a boat.
02:44 Anguilla
02:46 Being such a hot spot for honeymoons,
02:48 crowds can quickly turn your Caribbean getaway from a dream vacation into a lavish nightmare.
02:53 For a remote Caribbean experience, we think you'll be more comfortable basking on the beaches of
02:57 Anguilla rather than in Barbados or Aruba.
03:01 In addition to hosting a fairly low population of just over 15,000,
03:04 Anguilla is among the Caribbean's least visited islands.
03:08 That doesn't mean Anguilla is inferior to the Caribbean's most iconic locales.
03:12 On the contrary, Anguilla is rich with coral reefs, crystal clear waters,
03:16 and tropical climate that we can connect to the Caribbean.
03:19 It's just much easier to find an open space to lay down a blanket on the white sand beaches.
03:24 If you're willing to go a step further, the main island is surrounded by minuscule caves
03:28 that are essentially deserted. Rent a boat and seek out a private island.
03:33 County Donegal, Ireland
03:35 Ireland boasts a boisterous sense of community, which can be found in any pub.
03:40 Of course, this country also accommodates those looking for a quiet alternative.
03:44 The north-western County Donegal has been described as a forgotten land.
03:48 That's not to say the county is desolate, as over 166,000 people live there.
03:52 As far as tourism goes though, you won't be shoving through the crowds
03:56 you'd encounter at the Cliffs of Moher.
03:58 What the county lacks in iconic landmarks, it more than compensates for
04:02 with other amenities that Ireland is famous for.
04:04 Fast green landscapes to traverse through, historic castles to admire,
04:08 and dramatic coastlines where one can contemplate what's on the horizon.
04:11 To take a page from the Banshees of Inisheren, it's an idyllic place to work on your music alone.
04:16 It even inspired an Irish folk rock song entitled "Las Vegas, in the hills of Donegal".
04:21 Negril, Jamaica
04:24 Jamaica is another Caribbean destination where the crowds can sometimes take away
04:27 from the natural splendour. While most honeymooners are attracted to Montego Bay and Ocho Rios,
04:32 Negril is a far less populated and thus underrated beach resort.
04:37 Comfortably nestled near the island country's west end,
04:39 the town's population is roughly around 7,000. That's not to say other tourists
04:43 won't be drawn to Negril's stunning sunsets and cliff diving opportunities.
04:47 Thankfully, there's ample room to spread visitors out at the seven mile beach.
04:52 Technically, the beach is more like four miles long, with Bloody Bay making up the remaining
04:56 three miles, but room is still hardly an issue. The waters supply even more room with some of
05:01 the island's most tranquil spots for snorkelling, boating and diving.
05:04 Translating to Little Black One, Negril might seem small, but the Jamaican culture
05:08 rushes over the town like a tidal wave.
05:11 Guam
05:12 Guam is the largest of the more than 2,000 islands that make up the Micronesia sub-region.
05:18 So, there's plenty of space to go around as you trek across the exotic beaches,
05:22 lush forests and ancient ruins. On one hand, it's surprising that a territory with such
05:27 absorbing culture, history and backdrops isn't packed to the brim with tourists.
05:31 Perhaps part of that can be attributed to its location.
05:34 A dot in the middle of the Western Pacific Ocean, Guam is almost 2,500km away from the Philippines
05:41 and more than 2,600km from Japan. Plus, even when you're the largest island in the area,
05:46 it's easy to get lost in the shuffle with so many other options. This will ultimately work
05:50 to your advantage though, as you partake in the open diving spots, golf courses and shopping venues.
05:56 Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
05:59 Beyond its urban areas, Rwanda is saturated with green,
06:02 misty mountains that'll call to your inner adventurer. While there are various mountains
06:06 to conquer across the landlocked country, Volcanoes National Park stands out for a couple of reasons.
06:11 Namely, it hosts the world's largest mountain gorilla population,
06:15 as well as roughly 200 bird species and the elusive golden monkey.
06:19 For those looking to avoid crowds on their trip, you'll be drawn to the park's exclusivity.
06:24 Since the gorillas are endangered, they don't let anyone just wander into the park.
06:29 In addition to requiring a permit, only eight tourists are allowed to visit a gorilla family
06:33 per day. Although the gorillas are the main attraction, the park's caves, waters and rainforest
06:39 promise endless opportunities for exploration. As its name suggests, there are also five
06:43 sizable volcanoes in the park. Yangmingshan National Park, Taiwan
06:48 Taiwan possesses 10 national parks, although Yangmingshan may be the most calming spot to
06:53 get away from it all. Seven Star Mountain is the country's highest dormant volcano,
06:58 attracting visitors like a green beacon. Going in for a closer look, you'll quickly find that
07:02 Yangmingshan National Park has so much more to offer. The area is distinguished by its cheery
07:07 blossoms, sprinkling the land with a relaxing sentiment. It makes you want to slip into a
07:12 hot spring, which the park is thankfully abundant with. If you're looking for something more exciting,
07:17 Yangmingshan delivers with its hiking trails. The journey to Seven Star Mountain's summit
07:22 provides the most rewarding experience with a view that cannot be topped. Voyaging lower to the
07:26 northwest, you'll uncover another fascinating sight in Shaoyukeng, a post-volcanic marvel.
07:32 Koa Lipe, Thailand With a dense population of nearly 70 million,
07:37 Thailand might not strike you as a place to evade crowds. There is more to this Southeast Asia
07:42 country than booming metropolises like Bangkok, however. Koa Lipe is a thin piece of paradise
07:48 that many visitors sadly overlook. Maybe that's because it lives in the shadow of Koa Daeng and
07:52 Koa Raui, two large neighbouring islands. Others may flock to those titans, but their little sibling
07:58 has just as much to offer. About nine months out of the year, you can take a ferry down to this
08:03 haven for hiking, snorkelling and fun in the sun. During July, August and September though, you'll
08:08 have to take a boat from Pakbara. Visiting during this lower season has its advantages, allowing you
08:14 to pick out the most pristine spots at sunset, sunrise and Pattaya Beach.
