00:00 We're now seeing the launch of new
00:01 federal rules that will govern
00:03 the energy efficiency of lighting
00:05 systems, ending the sale and
00:06 manufacture of incandescent
00:08 light bulbs.
00:08 Yes, this is news not only of
00:10 the new standards, but also,
00:12 there were still incandescent
00:14 light bulbs being produced.
00:16 Here's a video explaining
00:17 the change.
00:18 >> The Biden administration has
00:20 banned incandescent light bulbs and
00:22 Republicans are pissed.
00:23 The rule officially just increases
00:25 the minimum efficiency standard of
00:27 light bulbs.
00:28 In practice, that means businesses
00:29 can no longer sell inefficient
00:31 incandescent bulbs and
00:32 must begin selling LEDs instead.
00:35 Though there are a few exemptions
00:36 like weird sized bulbs and
00:37 bug lamps.
00:38 While they are more expensive up
00:40 front, LED lights use up to 90%
00:41 less energy and
00:42 last up to 25 times longer than
00:44 typical incandescent bulbs.
00:46 The Department of Energy is
00:47 expecting consumers to save almost
00:49 $3 billion every year by making
00:51 the switch.
00:52 It's the final step in a push to
00:53 make household appliances more
00:54 energy efficient, which began with
00:56 President George W Bush in 2007.
00:58 President Barack Obama tightened
00:59 those regulations even further,
01:01 though they were eventually undone
01:03 by President Donald Trump,
01:04 who reportedly said energy
01:06 efficient bulbs made him look
01:07 orange.
01:08 The new rule, similar to the made
01:09 up narrative that President Joe
01:11 Biden was banning gas stoves,
01:13 has pissed off Republicans who
01:14 are tweeting dramatic things about
01:16 their rights to buy light bulbs.
01:18 >> It's a great video by NowThis.
01:21 I love that they threw in
01:22 the comment about the,
01:23 that's what makes him orange.
01:25 That's true.
01:25 You can tell by the way how common
01:27 these comments are because I guess
01:29 they're everywhere if that's
01:30 the case.
01:31 Anyway, the new standards set for
01:33 light bulbs mean that you have to
01:34 reach a certain level of efficiency.
01:37 It's not that they're specifically
01:38 saying incandescents, you're bad.
01:40 It's just that they can't reach
01:42 the efficiency standards.
01:43 In case any conservatives are
01:45 watching, the government
01:46 establishing efficiency standards
01:48 is not being started today.
01:50 That's actually a thing that's been
01:52 around for decades under both
01:53 Democratic and Republican
01:54 presidents and governments,
01:56 as they pointed out with NowThis.
01:58 The rules, of course,
02:00 do not affect the bulbs that you
02:01 already own.
02:02 They're not going to be searching
02:04 your house for the bulbs, and
02:05 I have no doubt that the five
02:06 will be saying that today.
02:08 There's also a special exemption
02:10 for some incandescents,
02:11 like for instance, inside of oven.
02:14 So there are some places where they
02:15 will remain, but you also won't be
02:17 able to import them from outside of
02:19 the country.
02:19 Bear in mind, as they pointed out,
02:21 only about 5% of the energy in
02:23 an incandescent bulb produces light.
02:26 The rest is heat.
02:27 And as you know, they burn out way,
02:30 way, way faster than LED bulbs.
02:33 You have to replace them,
02:34 wasting money not only with
02:36 the energy that you use, but
02:37 wasting money when you have to
02:39 replace them.
02:40 This is how technology works.
02:42 Sometimes it takes too long, but
02:45 eventually we replace inferior
02:47 products with better ones.
02:49 And the way our society works is
02:51 that when that happens,
02:52 conservatives lose their mind about
02:54 it so they can gain some sort of
02:55 political advantage.
02:58 So anyway, that'll be coming up
02:59 next.
02:59 But Sabrina, what do you think?
03:01 Are you terrified about this
03:02 change?
03:03 >> I cannot express enough that it
03:06 is still legal to own and
03:08 use these light bulbs if you still
03:11 have them.
03:12 I mean, if they haven't burned out
03:14 by now.
03:14 Because I think I did see that
03:16 people on Twitter are like, no,
03:18 they're going to come into our
03:20 homes, they're going to take our
03:23 light bulbs, they're going to take
03:25 our electricity, absolutely not
03:27 going to happen, don't worry.
03:29 And I am confused,
03:30 why would they not want the more
03:32 efficient product that lasts
03:34 longer, that saves you money?
03:37 I think maybe just because Biden
03:38 happens to be president right now,
03:40 and that's why they're freaking
03:42 out even though it was a Republican
03:44 president that kind of initiated
03:46 this change.
03:46 >> Yeah.
03:47 >> Yeah, people are being silly.
03:49 >> Well, look, it's going to save
03:51 a lot, $3 billion, they estimate
03:53 it'll be safe to consumers on
03:55 their energy bills.
03:56 Energy bills are really high,
03:57 people want them to be lower,
03:58 right?
03:59 This would seem to be a good thing.
04:00 It also puts far less carbon in
04:02 the air.
04:03 If you're a conservative,
04:04 don't go.
04:05 I know that you want more carbon in
04:06 the air, but sorry,
04:08 you're going to save money, but
04:09 we will pollute less, unfortunately.
04:11 It's all so ridiculous.
04:14 The thing about it that bothers me
04:16 is we are continually reminded by
04:18 the right that we cannot expect
04:20 anything big to be done to stop
04:22 climate change.
04:23 Everyone stopping eating meat,
04:25 which would be great for
04:26 the environment, it can't happen.
04:28 It's too big.
04:29 Don't ask us to do big things.
04:31 Okay, can we ask you to do
04:33 something super small,
04:34 like change your light bulb?
04:35 No, you can't do that either.
04:37 I'm not going to get rid of my car,
04:38 I'm not going to get rid of
04:38 my light bulb.
04:39 Don't ask me to do literally
04:40 anything.
04:41 I don't want to live in a society.
04:42 I want to be selfish and
04:44 waste money on producing heat in my
04:46 house from light bulbs that should
04:48 have been replaced decades ago.
04:50 It's so pointless.
04:51 We're supposed to be the most
04:53 efficient society in the world and
04:54 we have to convince people to use
04:55 the clearly better technology.
04:57 But anyway, as we said,
04:58 right winger is not happy about
04:59 the new energy efficiency standards.
05:02 Take a look at Donald Trump here.
05:03 >> The light bulb, people said,
05:05 what's with the light bulb?
05:06 I said, here's the story.
05:07 And I looked at it,
05:09 the bulb that we're being forced to
05:11 use, number one to me,
05:13 most importantly, the light's no
05:15 good, I always look orange.
05:17 [LAUGH] >> And so do you.
05:22 The light is the worst.
05:23 [LAUGH] >> But number two,
05:25 it's many times more expensive than
05:28 that old incandescent bulb that
05:31 worked very well.
05:32 >> It did not,
05:33 they were actually designed to burn
05:35 out in the way that they always
05:37 have, everyone knows that it is way
05:40 cheaper to use these new
05:41 advanced bulbs.
05:42 He is simply lying to his audience
05:44 and they don't care.
05:45 They're not going to hear any of
05:46 these facts.
05:47 They're not going to understand any
05:48 of this because they're going to be
05:49 terrified that something is being
05:51 taken away from them.
05:52 Not something serious like bodily
05:54 autonomy, but something stupid like
05:55 outdated technology.
05:56 Joey Manorino says,
05:58 today they're taking away your
05:59 incandescent light bulbs.
06:02 Tomorrow they take away your gas
06:03 stove, no they don't.
06:04 They're taking away everything they
06:06 can so they can ultimately take
06:08 our guns.
06:09 As everyone knows,
06:10 the government would love to just
06:11 take your guns right now.
06:13 But if they were to bust into your
06:15 house, they'd be too visible with
06:17 the current light.
06:18 So they need to darken a bit with
06:20 the LEDs before they can take
06:21 your guns.
06:21 This is a plot that makes total
06:23 sense.
06:23 And once they take our guns,
06:25 they'll take us off to FEMA camps
06:27 to reeducate us from our backwards
06:29 conservative views.
06:30 Never stop fighting every last
06:34 thing.
06:34 Like fighting reason and
06:36 the linear flow of time and
06:38 the advanced society we live in and
06:41 all of that stuff.
06:42 The feeling in your gut that all of
06:45 this is dumb as hell,
06:47 never stop fighting that.
06:49 Anyway, Sabrina,
06:50 what do you think?
06:51 It's a convincing argument from
06:52 old Joey.
06:53 >> That tweet was so good.
06:55 I love how it was such a jump from
06:58 light bulbs to FEMA camps.
07:00 [LAUGH] >> That's a slippery slope
07:03 right there.
07:04 A slippery, dark slope.
07:05 >> It is indeed a slippery slope.
07:07 I love how Donald Trump blamed
07:10 the light bulbs on him being
07:13 orange.
07:13 Like, okay, but you're the only
07:16 one who's turning orange,
07:18 supposedly, as a result of these
07:20 light bulbs.
07:21 If that's really such an issue,
07:24 just adjust the camera warmth.
07:26 That's all you got to do.
07:27 But no, instead he has to prop up
07:30 these inefficient old light bulbs.
07:33 It's just such a funny,
07:35 it's so funny.
07:36 >> It's ridiculous.
07:39 It's ridiculous even just in
07:40 the replies because someone replied
07:41 to him, who the F still uses
07:43 incandescent light bulbs?
07:44 And he says,
07:45 people who don't want cancer.
07:47 And this model replies with that.
07:49 And I just think that's hilarious.
07:52 Who says Twitter can't still
07:54 be fun?
07:54 But anyway,
07:55 here's a fun challenge.
07:57 So I had never heard of Joey
07:59 Manorino or whatever, but
08:00 he's one of the many utterly
08:02 indistinguishable right wingers who
08:04 has a show or whatever.
08:05 So he has a show,
08:06 which means that he has a studio.
08:08 If we were to go in that studio,
08:09 what sort of bulbs do you think
08:11 he's got in all those lights he
08:13 uses to light his studio?
08:15 Obviously, he's not using those
08:16 advanced commie bulbs.
08:18 He's using bulbs that burn out
08:19 every day.
08:20 And sometimes they just explode
08:22 showering with glass like a man.
08:24 Anyway, he's not the only one.
08:26 Mark Levin also whined a bunch.
08:29 Mark Levin saying that Joe Biden's
08:30 making the case that there's
08:32 climate change because it's hot
08:33 outside.
08:34 Yeah, that's not, don't,
08:35 like Mark Levin,
08:36 you're 1,000 years old.
08:38 Don't do the ignorant thing that
08:39 like the Ben Shapiro's do and
08:40 everything.
08:41 You're an old person.
08:42 You're supposed to understand
08:43 the arguments that people are using.
08:45 You don't have plausible
08:46 deniability.
08:46 Nobody is saying that we believe in
08:48 climate change just because it's
08:49 hot out there.
08:50 But we can also point out that
08:52 record breaking heat waves
08:53 are currently, again,
08:54 why would he care about any of this?
08:56 He's not going to be around to
08:58 experience much more of it.
08:59 But we have to worry about future
09:01 generations as well.
09:02 So we're going to try to do
09:04 something by abiding with these
09:05 efficiency standards and
09:07 pushing for much more.
09:08 Any final thoughts, Sabrina?
09:10 >> That's such a silly point
09:11 because we also believed in climate
09:14 change when Texas was freezing over
09:16 when California was getting
09:18 destroyed with all the rain.
09:19 It's not necessarily a warmth
09:22 thing.
09:22 Yeah, just they're so silly.
09:26 >> Before we move on,
09:28 can I just point out to any
09:30 conservatives?
09:32 Isn't it weird that nothing can
09:34 ever improve for you?
09:36 That anything that changes,
09:38 obviously if it's replacing
09:40 something else,
09:42 well, how dare you replace that?
09:44 Isn't it weird that all these
09:46 people working really hard every
09:48 day, scientists and engineers and
09:50 all the people who are working hard
09:52 do, progressive society,
09:54 if they ever succeed,
09:55 that's a terrible thing and
09:57 it can't be allowed?
09:58 No, we need to go back to the old
10:00 broken busted stuff that,
10:02 it's just what sort of way to live
10:04 is this?
