Paul Randolph Previews 2023 Indiana D-Line at Fall Camp
Transcript
00:00 >> Obviously, a lot of competition in the defensive line this fall.
00:05 Just wondering which guys have stood out so far as you opened up practice.
00:08 >> Well, you're right, there is a lot of competition.
00:11 I think that's the best part of it.
00:13 We've got guys competing with each other.
00:15 I think the best part of them competing with each other is they've grown into
00:20 a really close brotherhood.
00:22 So they understand we're gonna compete, we're gonna help each other be the best,
00:26 but we're also competing to play.
00:28 But right now, I think Andre Carter, of course,
00:32 he's been working his tail off the whole year ever since he's been here,
00:36 working his tail off.
00:37 LD Cox has done a really good job since the end of the season.
00:42 PJ Lucas, and then we added Phillip Bleedy and
00:47 Marcus Burris doing a really good job right now.
00:50 I got Sneed, he's my young fella coming up in the end, and really,
00:55 really excited about it.
00:56 And then, of course, Nick James, who got a little bit of playing time last year,
01:01 is doing a really good job, is in the mix.
01:03 So I guess what you're hearing is I'm excited about the depth we've got, and
01:08 like you said, the competition that we got going every single day.
01:11 >> Scott, I need to ask you a question.
01:14 >> Right here, Paul.
01:16 I asked Coach Allen the same question.
01:18 In early days, when you're first starting practice,
01:21 what are some of the things that you're looking to set guys apart at this stage?
01:25 I know you still got a ways to go, but what are the things you're looking for?
01:29 >> Attitude and effort early, and just trying to be the standard.
01:34 So being your mindset, physical, violent, aggressive, and
01:39 then finishing, which is, we call it break the stack.
01:43 When the ball is outside of my area, I'm breaking the stack, I'm going to the ball.
01:48 And so energy, effort, physicalness, we still can get that.
01:53 And the way we practice, which is who and what we want to be.
01:57 But to me, and then to finish, to burst, to break the stack, to the ball, and
02:01 just being explosive in those things.
02:04 >> Hi, Coach.
02:07 When you guys were working on that inside zone drill, I think it was pre-10 or
02:11 11, you guys talked a lot about the importance of physicality for
02:14 both the offensive and defensive lines.
02:15 >> Solved it.
02:16 >> From in the past, I've understood that your defensive lines have maybe been
02:20 asked to open up holes and allow the linebackers to make plays.
02:23 Can you describe what kind of effort you guys are making this year to allow
02:26 the defensive linemen to make more plays in the backfield with the increased size
02:29 and depth that you've talked about?
02:30 >> Absolutely, and to me, I think it does, not sure about the past.
02:36 But for us, our guys, I think we are bigger and more athletic, right?
02:43 Which allows for more playmakers, guys that can do the same thing, right?
02:47 Take two, our whole thing is two for one.
02:50 I tell them, Ms. Randolph loved two for one sales, right?
02:54 So we love to go two for one.
02:56 If we can do that, the linebacker's gonna be great.
02:59 And if we're doing that,
03:00 the linebacker's gonna pull one of them off of us at one point.
03:03 Now we've gotta be ready to make the play.
03:05 And I think we are athletic enough now to make the play when it's presented to us.
03:10 But for me, I tell my guys, we're gonna make plays through our responsibility.
03:14 So if you're straining through your responsibility,
03:17 you will make the plays that you're supposed to make.
03:19 And then if you wanna be an All-American, you have outstanding fanatical effort and
03:24 make plays on the sideline.
03:25 >> Hey, Coach, you mentioned Andre Carter and Vincent Snead there.
03:31 And can I ask you, I know in the spring you guys were moving Andre around a little
03:34 bit, depth's always important.
03:35 But to have the ability to move him around and
03:38 plug somebody on that end spot who doesn't really miss the beat.
03:40 I guess how important is that for you?
03:42 And then I guess at that D in spot,
03:44 what kind of depth are you seeing being built behind Andre?
03:47 >> Well, right now I think it's a lot of depth.
03:50 And what you don't know is big Marcus Burris is actually D in too.
03:55 Now and truthfully, it's crazy cuz he's 287 pounds and he moves like he's 250.
04:03 But that depth between Andre being able to do both inside or
04:09 out, Marcus Burris being able to do both inside and out.
04:14 Naturally, Snead is an outside only guy.
04:17 But to be able to move guys in and out, and then inside,
04:21 they're interchangeable also.
04:23 My noses can play three techniques, my three techniques can play nose.
04:27 And so that's how we're creating depth at every position.
04:30 >> Mike, I need to write to Jeff.
04:34 Has this been a unique circumstance with six new guys?
04:37 I mean, have you had anything like this in your career?
04:39 And did you kind of take pause and try to think about how to approach rebooting
04:43 like this, it's almost like free agency with you guys, or you brought in so
04:46 much talent, lost so much talent?
04:47 And did you take time to think about that?
04:49 And how have you, has that changed your approach at all this year?
04:53 >> Well, for me, right, the excitement of the new guys, for one.
04:58 When you do have all new guys that are trying to feel their way and
05:02 make their mark, right?
05:04 You get that competitiveness, you get competition.
05:07 And we all know competition breeds greatness.
05:10 And so to me, that's the best thing about it to me.
05:13 You got six new guys, they're all fighting for three spots, right?
05:17 And so it's gonna be heightened every single day, the level of competition.
05:22 And we do, every day, we grade it every day.
05:24 They know how they fared every single day.
05:27 But for me, I think adding the guys in, I think it's about your room.
05:33 In my room, I think the best thing I got is great character young men, I do.
05:38 And so when you bring in new guys, they welcome them as a brother, but
05:43 we're gonna compete, right?
05:45 We're gonna love you, we're gonna bring you in, but we're gonna compete.
05:49 And that's where LEO comes in.
05:50 >> All right, Jack, a front last question.
05:54 You mentioned Vincent Sneed and Nick James, the two young guys.
05:56 I remember last fall, Coach Allen said that they didn't physically look like
06:00 freshmen when they were freshmen.
06:02 I guess now that you've had a year to work with them,
06:04 what do you like about just what they bring and
06:06 where do you wanna see them keep improving?
06:09 >> Well, for Vincent first, right?
06:11 Vincent has put on 30 some odd pounds in a year, so he's actually bigger.
06:16 He didn't look like a freshman last year, now he really don't,
06:19 cuz he's up to 260 plus pounds, which is where we needed him.
06:22 So he's done an awesome job doing that.
06:25 And then now it's just about, cuz he's missed spring.
06:29 So now he's just working to catch up with all the fundamental techniques.
06:34 But being explosive, his athleticism, his work ethic,
06:38 those are the things that we love about him.
06:40 Nick is explosive, explosive, explosive, right?
06:43 And of course, his weight's up where we want it to be, so we're excited about him.
06:48 And the athleticism that Nick, all of them, but that Nick possessed,
06:52 is gonna allow him to be a playmaker also.
06:55 But you're right, those two young guys, they've got a chance to help us add depth,
07:00 and then also to be playmakers for us also.
