Alvin Kamara and Cam Jordan dominated the headlines from Friday's Saints training camp practice, but there was tons of action from Day 8.
Transcript
00:00 All right folks back for another Saints training camp recap day 8 Friday
00:07 TGIF out in Metairie fans back in attendance before we break it down
00:12 Let's make sure to give some love to Justin Burgess of Ben pro for sponsoring today's show again
00:18 If you have a business that's in the greater New Orleans region need help with employee benefits or health insurance
00:24 Please give him a call 504-888-8038
00:28 He's helped a lot of people locally. He's gonna be helping some really big people locally here soon
00:34 So thank him again for producing today's show and sponsoring today's show
00:38 All right, so we got a lot of fun stuff to talk about. Let's start with how the day
00:43 Transpired right? So the first part of today is Cam Jordan getting his contract extension
00:51 So essentially it's a two-year contract extension worth up to 27 and a half million dollars
00:56 And so presumably that would take cam into year 15. So he's in year 13 right now
01:02 So he's locked up for our next couple of seasons and then after that we'll see how it goes
01:06 But this gives him an opportunity and a chance to finish his career as a saint
01:10 Which is something very meaningful his dad Steve Jordan played for the Vikings from I think it was 82 to 94
01:17 If I'm not mistaken might be 81, but I'm pretty sure it's 82, but he played for the Vikings his whole entire career
01:23 Legend amongst the Minnesota Vikings fan base community all those types of things in Jordan
01:28 Look when it comes down to it be hard not to look at you know, he's obviously gonna go in the ring of honor
01:34 He has a team's franchise all-time
01:37 Leading sack artist has a chance to get into the top 20 by the time his careers over
01:43 He might be able to get into the top 15 all-time at sacks just depends on usage all those types of things
01:49 So, uh, look it's super important. I think it's a great move. Cam's been a guy again
01:54 I kind of pointed this out a little bit here and there but
01:57 no matter what the team is, nobody has a better pulse on this team than Cam Jordan, right and
02:02 When there is a loss or win whether it's things aren't going well cam is always talking to us
02:10 He always I mean he doesn't sugarcoat anything. He's obviously very honest and I know some people say well 24-hour rule
02:17 That's all you see from him and stuff. But when he's in the locker room, he talks he tells us all the stuff
02:20 So look, I'm happy for this one. I don't think it's a bad deal. You know, look he's playing extremely
02:27 well, he's missed two games one was due to kovat and then the other was due to
02:32 Orbital injury and he said he was trying to push to play that week, but didn't work out for him
02:38 So look, that's obviously the biggest news of the day. We'll get in a training camp in a second
02:42 But the other one is Alvin Kamara. He talked to us after practice, but the judgment has been handed down by the NFL
02:50 It's a three-game suspension. So he's gonna miss the season opener against Titans
02:54 He'll miss the second week against the Panthers and then the third week he gets Green Bay
02:58 Those both are road trips Panthers game is on Monday night football and then he's eligible to return after week three
03:05 After that games over so just some context on it
03:09 He can be in preseason practices and games, but after once we get to the regular season
03:14 He cannot so that's gonna be interesting Kendra Miller taste some Hill
03:19 And obviously Jamal Williams if you're playing in a fantasy league
03:23 Those are the guys you absolutely want to get and ride for the first few weeks
03:27 I'd lean more to Jamal Williams possibly taste some Hill for sure
03:30 But Kendra Mill is gonna get his is his work in and then if you're looking for an option beyond that, you know, Benjamin
03:36 Possibly Kirk Merritt would be the other guys. I'd take a look at but you know, look Kamara hasn't talked to us in a long time
03:42 He said it afterwards have been about an 18 19 month ordeal and in Kamara is usually the best one of the best locker room interviews
03:48 He's straight to the point. He's very insightful. He knows his stuff and then some he also has a great pulse on this team
03:55 But obviously hasn't been talking to us and not talking about football and with this thing kind of just lingering, right?
04:02 And so he spent 20 minutes with us after practice
04:05 He was making sure he answered all questions, right and you get pulled off like hey, it's time to time to go
04:11 We got other people talking. He's like no I see these questions. So that's definitely appreciated but
04:15 Just taking accountability and responsibility for his actions and just obviously talking about the incident and you know again
04:22 Everything that he said it's it's valid. I mean, it's you just got the elephant out, you know
04:28 Or address the elephant in the room and you know, we can get back to football the suspensions in place
04:33 Obviously the Saints they're gonna keep on moving forward with everything, you know again when this first came out personal conduct conduct policy
04:41 I could have put him at six games
04:43 But you know three
04:45 Sounds like a pretty good deal to me if from everything
04:48 It looks like I've read and just seen or heard it doesn't look like there's gonna be any appeals process
04:53 So this is probably what's gonna happen my best case for all parties involved and such
04:58 But obviously very remorseful for his actions all those types of things which obviously goes a long way and we can put this to bed
05:04 And so he just wants to focus on playing football. He's looked really good out there
05:07 You know, let's talk about practice probably the reason you came here training cap
05:12 But of course, you know sage.media si.com slash NFL slash Saints to get your full
05:17 Breakdown recap. This was a day probably a lot of people if you talk to him said there's not much going on
05:24 Somehow I end up finding recap a whole bunch of stuff
05:27 So again, if you want to know all the details with all the stuff that happened go over to say stop media
05:32 Check out my full recap. We'll hit on some of the high points. First thing would be the attendance part of it
05:37 So you had guys return like Ryan Ramchick and Bradley Roby, you know, the team had a day off on Thursday
05:43 But they were in back in the lineup same thing with Jimmy Graham as well
05:47 So that was obviously the first good thing to see you had guys leave practice early like Alante Taylor and Calvin Throckmorton
05:53 Taylor was out there Throckmorton was not so you had Michael Thomas veteran rest day
05:58 Cam Jordan not their veteran rest day, of course
06:01 deservely, so
06:03 James Hurst wasn't there, but I did see him
06:05 You know around the facility stuff. That's not an injury related from my understanding
06:10 It should be a veteran rest day the two that are really
06:12 concerning I guess or the ones that you want to talk about is
06:15 Anders Pete and Calvin Throckmorton Throckmorton left with a elbow injury the other day at practice Pete is dealing with a strained quad
06:22 so
06:23 Not good news. It's a concern the offensive line
06:27 You know, I think that was probably the biggest question mark in some aspects. I think the defensive line is gonna be fine
06:34 Linebacker guys behind Pete Warner and Mario Davis still have me a little bit concerned, but the offensive line I've said it before
06:42 I'll say it again. It's not a matter of if it's a matter of when and we're already seeing these pile up during camp
06:48 You know, so Throckmorton, hopefully he's okay
06:52 That's something to pay attention to Anders Pete again. We know he's never played a full season
06:57 This is just kind of the fact since where the things are right now, right?
07:01 And so look the offensive line today, you know, if it was to be today Trevor Penning James Hurst that left guard with if Pete's out
07:09 McCoy sees our Ruiz and then Ryan Ramchick. I'm not worried about from from McCoy on to the right side
07:16 I'm worried about that left side now
07:17 One of the things I also want to pass along kind of jumping all over the place
07:20 But Trevor Penning talked to us after practice and I know a lot of people said this guy's just injury prone all this other stuff
07:26 One of the things he said after practice and just want to touch on because I tweeted it out and such
07:31 But he said that these were just more for bad luck because if you remember his first injury with the turf
07:36 His toe got caught in the turf
07:38 So that's what happened to the first one and the second one was after the play just one of those flute things
07:44 Doesn't he'd said he didn't remember what it was
07:46 But he is working on some of his footing some technique and a few things just to help along the process
07:51 But really just chalked it up to bad luck. And so hopefully that's the case because this team needs Trevor Penning
07:55 He's definitely working in pass protection
07:58 That's where his kind of weaker part of his game is right now
08:01 But he told us like he's looked pretty good in past where I had him charted a couple times going up against Carl Granderson
08:06 And Isaiah Foskey, he looked really solid in his past protection reps
08:10 So I'm glad to see some of those evolve a little bit there
08:13 but you know, it's one of those things where
08:16 there's a legitimate concern on this offensive line and what things look like in week one and how is the durability and what's the plan for
08:23 the season right and so
08:25 Landon young got you know starting reps at left guard today. And if you've been reading my recaps, this is not new information
08:31 But he has been working in guard positions. Nick Saltavery is running the second team left guard position
08:39 You still have Lewis kid who has been playing it tackle. He's been playing a lot of
08:43 different tackle positions so
08:45 Brock Morton was a big piece of the offensive line depth, you know, they brought in Trey Turner
08:50 They brought in a couple of guys now, so it's just one of those things where now it seems like it's a revolving door at
08:56 This point, hopefully they can get healthy. Hopefully come together
08:59 Hopefully Nick Saltavery can come along pretty quickly because they're gonna need him at some point this year if all this
09:05 Continues to happen right but you know, look overall again
09:09 I wrote down a lot of observations some other things to point out
09:12 So Saints did mostly a traditional base for three
09:16 But then they rolled in where they had an extra DB and they were in and had slot guy, which is Bradley Robey
09:21 And so basically, you know three-man rush DeMario's at linebacker. So Jordan Howden has been that guy
09:27 That's the extra defensive back in that package now. We'll see if that plays out and continues to happen, but good sign for him
09:34 He's somebody that kind of flashed in minicamp a little bit and obviously some in OTAs
09:39 But with contact it's one of those that you want to see more
09:42 He said before long time ago that he'll play any position. He's done all those positions or play special teams
09:48 I think he's just one of those blue collar type of workers blue chip workers
09:52 Whatever you want to refer to him as that just does the work and can do a good job
09:57 So real good sign for him as far as practice goes just to hit on things. Obviously John Green was there
10:02 That was a big thing. He's in a consulting capacity similar to what he was before and so he's in for the next few days
10:09 Again, same thing. They've done this before they brought in guys like Mike Martz to the table
10:14 They brought in some of these guys
10:16 You know that used to be these big offensive gurus or things Mike March was brought in to help usage without in Camaro. So
10:22 Gruden here to help with Derek Carr a little bit. And so he's obviously here for the next few days. He's not on staff
10:29 So I know people are gonna tend to be like, oh John Gruden on the staff and stuff
10:33 So park the brakes a little bit
10:35 Pump the brakes if you will, whatever you want to call it that way
10:39 Just something to keep an eye on just as we progress through that something else that I've noticed is
10:44 the Saints using more of a two running back set, so
10:49 Again, I pointed out a couple things as far as what we've seen what we haven't seen
10:54 We've seen Rashid Shaheed out of the backfield
10:56 We've seen out there work with the wide receivers
10:57 But a more of a two running back set up and today you saw something simple simple was like
11:02 Khmer is running an angle route, you know going
11:05 Angle towards the middle and in Jamal Williams also on the field running towards the flats the Saints running backs
11:11 This is a more of talented group to be able to run a two-back set
11:16 I think in a lot of ways and so I'm really excited to see that prospect develop
11:20 So that was definitely one thing, you know
11:22 Look, I think seven on sevens again, if you want all the details be sure to check out all my recaps
11:27 Just kind of talk about maybe some plays of the day or just guys that might be stood out
11:32 Camaro was one when we're doing seven on seven. Look they pick on Zach Vaughn a good bit and
11:37 Vaughn's probably not there as a pass as a pass defender. Not yet. I mean not to where he's like these guys got it
11:44 He's solid but I do like
11:46 some of the things I've seen from him as far as
11:49 Positioning and just being able to pursue and all those types of things
11:52 But this one just got torched by Alvin Camara and the thing is it was a wheel route huge hookup downfield
11:59 I don't know many people that when it's peak Alvin Camara
12:03 That's gonna be able to defend that perfectly thrown ball by Derek Carr perfect execution might have went for a touchdown
12:10 If not, it was a big gain
12:12 You put Camaro on a lot of guys. It's gonna be a mismatch
12:14 So I'm interested to see how that kind of plays out during the year
12:17 Um other things, you know, look I think the run defense the defense in general has had a really good day
12:24 Overall offense struggled a little bit today, you know, there was a few things a little bit of drops
12:30 There's still a little bit of just I don't know
12:32 I don't want to say the tempo was off but a little bit more runs
12:35 So you got a lot of more tackle for losses and just other things that kind of worked out in that advantage if you will
12:41 And so look, I think the overall practice it was a heater
12:45 They've changed the format so they you know started inside then they come out about 10 stay about an hour
12:52 Maybe a little bit over and that's just gonna be the format for fans who are in attendance on Saturday and Sunday
13:00 Just kind of looking up, you know, look you're gonna hear a lot about guys like Lynn Bowden jr
13:06 He was guy that flashed at practice today. He's one of the best they brought in guy from Kentucky and returned punts
13:12 He's one that made a couple plays today
13:15 You know, he's somebody that you know
13:17 I've talked about this wide receiver battle and just kind of put a bow on some of this stuff that we've talked about but the
13:23 Wide receiver battle is totally up for grabs
13:26 after
13:28 Michael Thomas and
13:30 Rashid Shaheed and
13:32 obviously for
13:34 You know Chris Alave
13:36 Four five and six if they keep six receivers is really up for grabs and I made the comment
13:42 I said if anybody is going to step up to the table
13:45 They need to do it soon, right? Because if the starting roster was assembled today
13:50 It's Drake one and then I put Keith Kirkwood there and then wide receiver six
13:55 It's a toss-up because I think a T Perry he has promise been a little bit inconsistent
14:01 The thing I like about Perry I put on a hit on this and some of the other
14:04 Many campuses OTAs and stuff is that he'll rebound pretty quickly. So it's off and on with him sometimes James, Washington
14:12 Sometimes we see some things not a lot that stands out or Brian Edwards same thing
14:17 He had a bad day the other day. And so
14:19 Again, I think four five and six is so up for grabs
14:22 But right now the edge is to trade one Smith and Keith Kirkwood because they're vets they look pretty good
14:28 Drake one does a lot of the dirty work all that type of stuff. So I mean again
14:33 something that we're gonna have to pay attention to and then lastly just kind of talk a little bit about it, but with the
14:39 Kicking battle so we got to see Blake Gilligan and will Lutz
14:43 Today Lutz went five of seven. He missed two kicks. He missed his second kick in the first set
14:50 So he did three and then he did five kicks
14:52 So his second one which was right after actually point about 41 yards, I would say maybe it's in that late
14:58 Long late like long 39 to 41 yard range
15:03 kick
15:04 Hits the right upright
15:06 No good, and then in his second attempts when he did those five
15:11 The first kick was just wide right extra point I get it happens
15:15 But you know and I point out Lou Hedley was holding so it's normally Gilligan. So I know they're gonna fill it out
15:21 I don't want to get people thinking just because he misses a kick in practice him or Blake groupie
15:27 That that means he's out of a job. I think we'll let's again
15:33 Going tie goes to runner. It's got to be Lutz today
15:36 It's got to be Gilligan these guys
15:38 Hedley and groupie are gonna have to just bring something a little bit extra and I think this is gonna come down to preseason
15:44 So a lot of good stuff from Saints practice. We've got Saturday. We got Sunday and
15:49 Monday and then we're off on Tuesday and then before you know it shoot first preseason games almost here
15:55 So we'll have plenty more to break down
15:58 Again, say stop media for all the latest and greatest from training camp in Ross Jackson
16:03 At there every day and getting you stuff as it comes
16:07 Also observations and interviews on our video side all the recaps. Thanks for your support. We really appreciate it
16:14 Also shout out to Justin Burgess have been pro for sponsoring today's show. Thanks guys. We'll be talking very soon
