Marcus Maye talks about his second year with the Saints after training camp on Saturday.
Transcript
00:00 I got a good shot out there, so it's good.
00:04 Marcus, how does it feel kicking off year two with the team?
00:07 It feels great.
00:09 Definitely feel excited about this year coming in.
00:13 Had a pretty good off season, you know,
00:14 getting my body right and everything like that,
00:16 working on my game and stuff.
00:18 Just being around the guys, going into this defense year two,
00:22 being in the locker room, so just overall
00:24 feel a lot better than I did last year.
00:26 How would you say that chemistry with you entirely
00:30 is this year compared to last year?
00:32 It's definitely a night and day difference,
00:36 because obviously, you know, each week,
00:38 each practice we were learning each other,
00:40 but now I feel like we've got a pretty good hold of each other.
00:43 Like, we can do things.
00:45 We're not even, you know, necessarily thinking about it
00:47 and talking about it.
00:48 So just the chemistry that we have,
00:50 obviously we're locker mates.
00:52 So just we're around each other all day,
00:56 keeping track of each other in the off seasons,
00:57 things like that.
00:59 So it's, you know, carried to off the field as well.
01:01 So just being next to him, you know,
01:04 watching him, you know, for a long time
01:06 and learning from him at the same time
01:08 has definitely been helping me.
01:09 So just being out there with him has been great for me.
01:13 -Other side. -Where's some of the things
01:16 you've been doing to have a different outcome,
01:19 you know, with this upcoming season?
01:22 A lot was, you know, I was coming off of Achilles injuries,
01:24 things like that.
01:26 So that was the main thing, just getting that going again,
01:29 working on my strength and explosiveness,
01:32 speed and agility, stuff like that.
01:34 Definitely feel a lot better coming around year two.
01:38 You know, just overall general health and things like that.
01:42 So, you know, just feel overall healthy.
01:44 -What mentally?
01:46 -Just, you know, continue to work,
01:49 knowing that it's an everyday process.
01:51 You know, you can't look too far ahead.
01:53 Like I said, just an everyday grind,
01:55 just being around family and friends like that
01:57 and just looking forward to the season.
02:00 You know, this is always the best time of the year for me
02:04 and everybody else around me.
02:05 So, like, you know, just overall,
02:07 spiritually just excited about it.
02:09 -Did you ever, like, fully feel like yourself last year?
02:12 Was there a point, or is that more this year
02:13 that you feel more?
02:15 -No, I feel good. I mean, obviously,
02:17 I knew I was coming off an Achilles injury,
02:19 but just, you know, being ready for week one,
02:22 knowing that, you know, I still can play football,
02:25 I still can run and, you know, jump, cut, make tackles.
02:28 And so just being out on the grass for me
02:31 just in general was a big thing for me.
02:33 But obviously looking to make a jump now going into year two,
02:37 so I just feel better overall.
02:39 -And what's it been like working with the Joeys
02:41 and the Ranked Chargers? -It's been great.
02:43 I mean, they've been around for a long time.
02:45 They've seen a lot of ball,
02:47 been around a lot of great safeties and DBs,
02:49 and they had a great thing coming in for us,
02:55 just learning new things,
02:58 just taking their knowledge one day at a time.
03:00 And so just having them in the room this year
03:02 has definitely been great so far.
03:04 -Mark, you get a chance to be around Marshawn.
03:06 What's he sort of like?
03:08 -Right.
03:10 No, I mean, we all know Marshawn.
03:12 He's a quiet guy.
03:13 But, you know, once he's comfortable with you,
03:16 he definitely opens up.
03:19 You know, he loves ball.
03:20 That's all he talks about is ball.
03:22 You know, just watching him go to work,
03:24 obviously last year was my first year
03:26 being out there with him.
03:28 But always from the outside looking in,
03:30 you know the type of talent he has,
03:32 the ability that he has to lock down
03:33 the whole side of the field.
03:36 But now that you see him go to work every day,
03:38 like, you see how it shows up on Sunday.
03:40 So just being a part of it now is definitely a blessing for me.
03:44 -Does he seem even more like him, just playing camp?
03:47 -Yeah, he's -- you know, he came in.
03:49 I mean, he even, like, throughout our days,
03:53 you know, he's in the gym, in the weight room,
03:57 still in conditioning reps, on a treadmill,
04:00 on an elliptical, doing sprints while everybody's,
04:03 you know, sitting at lunch, things like that.
04:05 And, you know, he doesn't really say anything,
04:08 but, like, you go in there and you catch him,
04:10 you're like, "Okay."
04:10 Like, you see, like, a different Marshawn.
04:13 So just, you know, him being overall locked in
04:15 on this iPhone this year.
04:17 -Really, since he's signed,
04:20 Smoke Money has been kind of a fan favorite.
04:22 -Yeah. -What is it about his personality
04:24 that he's kind of got?
04:26 -He's a good player, as well.
04:27 I mean, he's a great guy off the field, too.
04:30 But once you see him on the field,
04:32 you can tell he really loves football.
04:35 You know, just, you know, he obviously had, you know,
04:38 injuries and stuff like that,
04:39 but his spirit was always the same.
04:42 He never had, like, a --
04:44 I mean, obviously, everybody has their days,
04:46 but you can tell overall, generally,
04:47 he just likes being around us.
04:49 He likes being around the guys,
04:50 and he enjoys being around football, so.
04:53 -Wade, is there any information from the league
04:56 on the possible suspension of the album
04:59 that's going to come out?
05:01 Have you heard?
05:02 -Not yet. It's still ongoing.
05:05 I haven't talked to the league yet.
05:07 But, obviously, coming up in a few weeks,
05:10 I will start that process.
05:12 -Is there a change or anything different
05:15 about D.A. from his first year at Santa
05:19 and going into his second year,
05:20 or is he the big upper out of that?
05:23 -No, he's definitely made his jumps, as well.
05:25 I mean, that's what he preaches to us.
05:27 He preaches everybody has, you know,
05:30 their duty to get better for each other around us.
05:33 So, you know, him being, you know, our ultimate leader,
05:36 you can see every day that he shows up to work.
05:39 You know, just something as him running win sprints
05:42 with us during camp is something, like,
05:45 you normally don't see, you know, from your head coaches.
05:47 So, you can tell he's excited about it.
05:51 He knows the type of team he has.
05:52 He knows the ability that he has.
05:54 He's made a lot of changes in the offseason
05:56 with coaching staff.
05:57 So, you know, just overall, you see him,
05:59 you know, coming along great.
06:00 So I'm excited for him, as well.
06:02 -Is there a chance that he ran them all?
06:04 -No, not at all.
06:06 No, no, but he definitely ran them all.
06:08 He was right next to me the other day.
06:10 So, you know, just to see your coach going to work, too,
06:13 for his players, so, you know, you're always excited
06:15 to play for somebody like that.
06:16 -When it comes to Woods and Robertson,
06:18 is there anything specific that they bring
06:20 in terms of their focus to the safety position?
06:22 -Right. Yeah.
06:24 With him, he does a great job of teaching us the details.
06:27 He gives us different perspectives to look at.
06:31 Every day, there's something new.
06:33 And he doesn't miss a beat.
06:35 He's from foot alignment to, you know,
06:39 your landmarks to everything like that.
06:40 He's very detailed.
06:42 You know, that's what you want from a coach,
06:44 to be able to find those little things
06:47 to help you get better as a player.
06:49 So just the fact that he's so detailed
06:51 is something that I appreciate.
06:52 -How's the relationship with him,
06:54 as you know, having the playing experience?
06:57 -Right. Yeah. Like I said, that's a major thing.
06:59 Just him actually playing the game,
07:01 going through it, and now coaching it and giving it back.
07:04 So he has both sides.
07:06 He has both perspectives.
07:07 So, you know, you appreciate that from the coach.
07:10 -When you talked to Bradley Wilby earlier,
07:13 is it just as simple as far as taking the football away
07:16 at times and we just catch?
07:17 -Right. Yeah. Yeah.
07:20 No, that's -- Joe, what he's put up --
07:23 We watch tape every day about all the missed opportunities
07:27 that we had last year.
07:30 And now, looking back on it, like you said,
07:34 if we literally just catch the balls that are thrown to us,
07:37 we could be, you know, top three in the league
07:39 in turnovers, things like that.
07:42 Even with us, you know, our past defense
07:44 being pretty good last year, it could have been even better
07:46 if we just made those small plays.
07:49 You know, it could have, you know,
07:51 changed the total outcome of everything last year.
07:53 -That's awesome.
07:55 Casey also spoke a little bit about the bonding
07:58 from defensive backstrips over the offseason.
08:00 -Right. -How has that impacted you?
08:02 -No, it's been great.
08:03 It's what you need, you know, on the field,
08:06 camaraderie and off the field,
08:07 because, you know, you got to get to know each other
08:09 as players and as men off the field.
08:11 So just knowing how everybody, you know,
08:14 operates on a daily basis, you know,
08:17 how everybody can talk to different people,
08:18 everybody has different things going on.
08:20 So just us being around each other during the offseason,
08:24 us, you know, in group chats, just small stuff,
08:26 keeping track of each other, checking on each other,
08:28 how's their day going and things like that.
08:30 It translates on the field.
08:32 So just us being around each other,
08:34 keeping up with each other 24/7 definitely helped.
