00:00 "Begging to be touched, like one of my mother's long, silky Saturday night wigs."
00:05 Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 10 Modern Sitcoms You Should Be Watching.
00:11 "That is incredible, Miss Howard. Can't wait to get on that level."
00:16 For this list, we're looking at the best situational comedies that premiered within the last decade
00:20 that you should definitely check out if you don't want to experience FOMO.
00:23 As much as we love New Girl, it hit our screens back in 2011, so you won't be seeing it on this list.
00:30 Did your favorite contemporary TV comedy make the list? Let us know in the comments.
00:34 Number 10. Grace and Frankie.
00:37 This quirky Netflix show stars some classic actors and actresses like Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Sam Waterston, and Martin Sheen.
00:44 "Why didn't you tell me?"
00:46 "Well, honestly, it never occurred to me."
00:50 They've all had their fair share of screen time throughout their decades-long careers,
00:54 but nothing they've done in the past has a premise like this one.
00:57 "Oh, it's not what you think. It's a he."
01:01 "Excuse me?" "And it's Saul. I'm in love with Saul."
01:05 The titular Grace and Frankie discover their husbands are more than just business partners,
01:09 and they find themselves as odd couple roommates despite the fact that they couldn't be more different.
01:14 "You're out of your mind. You're good at this."
01:19 This series is not only hilarious, but it shows us the power of friendship and resilience.
01:24 And also that, hey, spending our golden years with our best friends is totally an option.
01:29 Number 9. The Good Place.
01:31 Who would have thought that an idea that centers around the idea of death could be not only funny, but also uplifting and wholesome?
01:37 "Your true soulmate is here too. That's right. Soulmates are real."
01:43 Michael Schur did.
01:44 This is pretty unsurprising given that he's the creator responsible for tons of your favorite sitcoms.
01:49 Including The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
01:53 When Ne'er-do-well Eleanor finds herself in the afterlife,
01:56 she meets some of the most interesting people in one of the most captivating settings on any modern show.
02:01 "What the fork? Who are you?" "I'm Janet. I'm the informational assistant here in The Good Place."
02:06 Twist after twist keep us hooked, and discussions of morality, mortality, and the meaning of life
02:12 reveal some real insightfulness about what it means to be a human.
02:15 Here's a show that manages to be an absolute delight from start to finish.
02:19 "I'm ready."
02:21 Number 8. How I Met Your Father.
02:28 This How I Met Your Mother spinoff starring Hilary Duff has given us the early-oughts fix we've been looking for.
02:33 "We live in confusing times where it's really hard to meet someone and connect and have it feel...easy."
02:42 With the same general format as its predecessor, we love the modern take the creators have chosen to go with.
02:47 Sophie navigates things like Tinder, struggling as an artist and finding love,
02:52 all while being supported by her hilariously endearing friends.
02:55 "You are completely insane." "I am very into it."
03:00 We can't help but feel like we're watching a mashup of our favorite sitcom and our favorite reality show,
03:05 and we can't get enough.
03:07 This show is still in its early stages, and we've already seen a plethora of storylines and character growth happen before our eyes,
03:14 so we can't wait to see what happens next.
03:16 "I wanted to say, 'You rear-ended me, so how about I rear-end you?'"
03:19 "Hai-yai-yai-yai-yai-yai-yai-yai-yai!"
03:21 "But I didn't."
03:26 Number 7. One Day at a Time.
03:28 This series may be a reboot of a sitcom from the 70s, but it's anything but old-fashioned.
03:33 "Oh, yeah! She's good!" "Oh, my money's on her."
03:36 In this version, we meet Penelope, her kids Elena and Alex, and her mother Lydia as they deal with topics like mental illness,
03:43 sexuality, gender identity, and what it means to be Cuban-American.
03:47 "And it's so nice to finally have a young Latina around who speaks Spanish."
03:51 "I speak Spanish." "I'm young!"
03:55 They tackle all of these with a humor and relatability that is perfect for a TV show in today's world.
04:00 This Netflix original was saved from cancellation by Pop,
04:04 and we could not be happier that the team got the chance to wrap things up perfectly on their own terms.
04:09 "Berto wanted his final resting place to be at home, and I realized that wherever we are, it's home."
04:19 Number 6. Black-ish.
04:21 Starring Anthony Anderson and Tracey Ellis Ross as Dre and Rainbow Johnson,
04:25 this sitcom is not only full of laughs, it also tackles issues like social injustice,
04:30 racism, and marital hardships.
04:32 "Screwing things up is just another part of what it means to be a father, Dre.
04:36 It's how you learn to fix things."
04:38 The Andersons are an upper-class family living in suburbia,
04:42 and they manage to dish out equal parts happy and sad tears throughout the series.
04:46 While it shows the harsh truths of being black in America,
04:49 it also shows the light-hearted moments that come along with raising kids and navigating married life.
04:54 "A Saudi prince I met on Instagram wants to pay me to model."
04:57 It even spawned two spin-offs, Grown-ish and Mixed-ish,
05:02 both of which are as enjoyable as their source material,
05:05 and we think everyone should tune in to the ish universe.
05:08 "Sorry I'm late. There was a little snowflake on the elevator, so I had to take the stairs."
05:12 Number 5. Home Economics.
05:14 Accurately depicting the lives of people who are all in different places financially and
05:18 relationship-wise is not an easy task, but this show pulls it off.
05:23 "You know, falling to the bottom of the 1% of the 1% has
05:26 really made me rethink my spending habits, and now look at the price before I buy things."
05:30 In Home Economics, we're introduced to three siblings,
05:33 each of them representing the upper, middle, and lower class.
05:36 "That's just rich people, thinking they could take two parking spots like they own the world.
05:41 Meanwhile, we're cutting coupons just to get by."
05:43 "Yeah."
05:44 Their family is definitely a modern one, as all of them are struggling in their own ways,
05:49 which helps the audience connect to these relatable and realistic characters,
05:52 regardless of their social status.
05:54 "I'm not gonna leave and let you continue to lie to this woman in my yogurt mansion."
05:59 Through the ups and downs of life, it is clear that these siblings are there for one another,
06:03 which of course is always the recipe to a great family sitcom.
06:07 "How can I not be jealous? You guys are all BFFs with your work jokes and your Spanish and your
06:11 perfectly symmetrical faces."
06:13 Number 4. Superstore.
06:15 Any viewer that's worked in retail can surely relate to the plot of this show.
06:19 "We love this kind of passion and integrity that adds to all the colors of the cloud."
06:24 "Great, but you're not actually saying anything."
06:27 "That's because I'm truly listening."
06:29 Set in the fictional big box store Cloud 9, we meet quite the cast of characters.
06:33 Store manager Glenn runs a relatively loose ship.
06:36 Meanwhile, assistant store manager Dina more than makes up for it.
06:39 "No dependents."
06:41 "Me neither, unless you count my birds."
06:42 The store centers mostly around Amy and Jonah,
06:46 who work as hard at their jobs as they do suppressing their obvious feelings for one another.
06:51 Between the co-worker romances, hilarious cutaways with random shoppers,
06:55 and powerful scenes like a tornado ripping through the store,
06:58 there isn't much more we could ask for.
07:00 If you're looking to belly laugh in the middle of feeling all the feels, this is the one for you.
07:04 "What is employee appreciation day?"
07:07 "It's symbolic."
07:08 "I think it's a holiday in Canada."
07:09 Number 3. Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
07:12 Mike Schur just has this knack for taking workplaces that should be rather solemn
07:16 and turning them into gold mines for comedy.
07:18 Case in point, this lovable police procedural.
07:21 "Slam! That was a slam."
07:24 Andy Samberg's Jake Peralta may be the star of this show,
07:27 but every member of the precinct brings a lot to the table.
07:30 From Amy's towers of binders to Gina's hysterical delivery at every turn to
07:35 Holt being one of the best characters created ever,
07:38 there is no shortage of interesting personalities to fall in love with.
07:41 "Bing pot!"
07:42 The plots are clever, funny, and at times meaningfully grounded.
07:47 And we cannot forget about the Halloween heists, which are nothing short of iconic.
07:52 "What? No. What? No. What?"
07:58 Plus, the cold opens are unforgettable.
08:01 We love this show as much as Terry loves yogurt.
08:04 Number 2. Schitt's Creek.
08:05 This Canadian sitcom is a who's who of Canadian acting royalty.
08:10 The Rose family loses their fortune and moves to Schitt's Creek,
08:13 the only asset they have left.
08:15 And their big personalities are hard to squeeze into the small town.
08:19 "Okay, I don't know how to fold broken cheese like that."
08:22 "And I don't know how to be any clearer.
08:24 You take that thing and you fold it."
08:26 "And I don't know how to be any clearer.
08:26 You take that thing that's in your hand and you..."
08:29 "If you say fold in one more time."
08:31 While David's facial expressions and Moira's sayings never fail to make us laugh,
08:36 the emotional moments on the show are the ones that stick with us after the credits roll.
08:40 "It's called Schitt's Creek. And it's where we live."
08:43 Schitt's Creek is ahead of its time in its depiction of queer characters,
08:47 with the narrative leading with acceptance rather than mere tolerance.
08:51 If you still need convincing,
08:52 this series won all seven major comedy categories at the 2020 Primetime Emmys.
08:58 "Always nice to be nominated, Jocelyn,
09:00 but I'm not putting too much stock in regional hospitality awards."
09:04 Before we unveil our top pick, here are some honorable mentions.
09:07 Not Dead Yet.
09:08 Recently single and deeply haunted journalist Nell keeps us in stitches.
09:12 "I think I was so focused on what she wanted,
09:15 I didn't really take the time to consider what I wanted. What is this?"
09:19 "I thought you should know that you don't have to hide who you are around me."
09:21 "There are no rat archers in Star Rim."
09:23 Children Ruin Everything.
09:24 This comedy is hilariously real in its depiction of navigating parenthood.
09:28 "Mom, we're not really giving up."
09:30 "You were supposed to bring a side dish. You brought mayonnaise. And you're flies undone."
09:35 Last Man on Earth.
09:36 Will Forte's post-apocalyptic masterpiece was hilarious and cut short way too soon.
09:41 "Are you nice?"
09:42 "Are you a nice person?"
09:45 "Yes, yes, I'm really nice. I'm very, very, very nice. I'm so nice, seriously. I promise you."
09:50 Mom.
09:50 Christy and Bonnie's mother-daughter relationship is the epitome of chaotic fun.
09:54 "Well, for your information, I would give you any organ of mine."
09:57 "After what you put them through. You're better off taking a kidney from Gus."
10:03 Workin' Moms.
10:05 An endearing and hilariously real look at what moms go through to make it in today's world.
10:10 "You got quite a legacy around here."
10:12 "Oh, thanks. Yeah, I can't tell you how strange it is to get pregnant right at the top of my game."

10:32 Number 1. Abbott Elementary.
10:36 This newly debuted sitcom has already made waves through its whimsical and relatable
10:41 depiction of life in public schools in today's world.
10:44 "Look, I know this school is really cool. But I'm not sure I'm going to like it."
10:47 "It's rough, but I became a teacher to make sure students come out alive."
10:51 Taking place at an underfunded elementary school in Philadelphia, we see the teachers use humor,
10:56 meaningful connection, and resourcefulness to help their students succeed.
11:00 Quinta Brunson is the mastermind behind the series,
11:02 taking on the roles of both creator and protagonist.
11:05 At the 2022 Emmys, she made a name for herself as the first Black female three-time nominee
11:11 in the comedy category and also won the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
11:16 "Oh, do you hear that? Optimism wins again!"
11:19 While Abbott Elementary may be extra entertaining to educators,
11:22 everyone has either gone to school, has kids in school,
11:25 or knows teachers like the ones in the show. So it's got something for everyone.
