00:00 When they saw us out there from California with Jerry Crulls,
00:03 they just started booing.
00:05 So, you know, it didn't discourage us.
00:08 Yo, what's up?
00:09 This is Ice Cube.
00:10 Esquire has asked me to explain some things,
00:13 so let's dive in.
00:15 I think both of those guys broke
00:24 the first time I had a chance to work with them.
00:28 The first scene I worked with them
00:30 is when he first addresses them
00:33 in the Korean Jesus Church.
00:35 I ad-libbed a lot.
00:37 So they didn't know I was gonna do that,
00:41 so they broke.
00:41 They was laughing.
00:43 Out of all the people that I've played on screen,
00:46 man, let's see.
00:49 Probably wanna sit down, you know, with Doughboy.
00:51 Talk to Doughboy.
00:52 Darius Stone, Triple X,
00:54 he probably has a lot of stories and adventure.
00:57 So I guess those two guys.
00:59 Oh man, I was discovered.
01:05 I actually ran into John Singleton backstage
01:08 at the Arsenio Hall show.
01:10 He was an intern, and he was like,
01:13 "I'm a junior at USC.
01:15 "I'm writing this movie.
01:18 "You're perfect for it."
01:20 And I was like,
01:21 "Watch out, man."
01:23 He pursued me for two years.
01:24 You know, I would run into him,
01:26 and he would be like,
01:26 "Yo, I'm a senior now at USC.
01:30 "I'm gonna do this movie with you, Q."
01:31 And I'd be like, "Yeah, man, whatever."
01:33 Patting him on the head.
01:35 The rest was kinda history.
01:36 You know, he's definitely changed my life with that movie.
01:39 I would love for people like Lonzo Williams
01:46 to be celebrated.
01:47 Me and Dre were on his label
01:49 before we went to Ruthless with Eazy.
01:51 So he's a guy who's deep and entrenched
01:55 in West Coast hip hop,
01:57 and people should know it.
01:58 Yeah, always.
02:03 I would love to do that movie.
02:05 I think we need to have a petition
02:08 and talk to New Line.
02:10 And I have the rights to the movie.
02:11 They have the rights to distribute it.
02:14 If they put the IP in my control,
02:16 we get a lot more Friday franchise-type stuff,
02:20 and they'd make a lot more money.
02:23 - Come on, y'all.
02:24 Send them on the police at my door.
02:26 - That line is actually from my friend Ice-T's track.
02:32 It was a song, one of the first to really hit
02:36 out here on the West Coast that was real big.
02:39 It was cool to be able to bring some contemporary
02:43 culture to Superfly, you know,
02:45 that he's an Ice-T fan.
02:48 You get to be evil and nasty.
02:53 That's what's great about playing a villain.
02:55 But what's cool about Superfly, he has a heart.
02:57 He just wants, you know, to be liked.
02:59 And when you don't like him,
03:01 then he wants to rip down the skyscraper.
03:04 You know, it's just, it's normal stuff.
03:08 The first experience that I had on the New York stage
03:12 was at the Apollo Theater, getting booed.
03:17 I was in NWA.
03:19 Couple of songs, but nothing like,
03:21 we wasn't really major yet.
03:23 We went to the Apollo to perform at a seminar.
03:26 They had Biz Marquis, the Big Daddy Kane.
03:29 And so when they saw us out there from California
03:33 with Jerry Crowes, they just start booing.
03:36 So, you know, it didn't discourage us.
03:39 I came back as a solo artist and they cheered
03:42 and they threw money.
03:43 So it's pretty cold and a hot reception there.
03:48 Appreciate you watching.
03:50 Check out Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,
03:52 Mutant Mayhem in theaters August 2nd.
03:55 (upbeat music)
