Tyrann Mathieu speaks with the media following Monday's training camp practice.
Transcript
00:00 >> First half two minute drill, but for the defense,
00:02 how valuable is it to start to kind of get those situational reps in?
00:05 >> Yeah, I mean, a lot of times, a lot of games we play,
00:08 it comes down to the situation of football.
00:11 You have to improve the communication, and obviously you gotta try to find
00:16 a way to get off the field and get the ball back to the offense and
00:20 get them to appear in the business.
00:21 So I think the more and more we're able to kind of do realistic situational
00:26 games, I think the better off we'll be as a team.
00:30 >> Do you feel like that's particularly good for
00:32 the young guys that haven't maybe had that experience at NFL speed yet?
00:36 >> Yeah, I mean, a lot of those guys come from good programs,
00:38 but they're not necessarily in those kind of situations.
00:43 I think in the NFL, we can, we doubt, we're in those kind of situations,
00:48 whether it be into the second quarter, into the fourth quarter, so even third down.
00:54 We had a third down period today too, so the more and more we're able to kind of
00:58 win those situations and communicate and be better at that,
01:01 I think we can put a lot of wins together.
01:04 >> So what are you telling about Jordan Howden coming in and learning everything?
01:09 >> He's been great, man.
01:10 I think, like I said a few weeks ago, he's very smart.
01:16 He's a bright one kid.
01:17 He can really run, he can cover, he can play deep zone, short zone.
01:23 So he's coming along well.
01:25 We're kind of putting him in about three or four different spots.
01:28 So it's kind of cool to see him learn all those things and
01:31 kind of put it all together.
01:32 So he's been coming along great.
01:34 >> So I mean, your guy has obviously played a lot of different spots in your career.
01:38 So does he come and ask you about that sort of stuff?
01:41 >> Yeah, yeah, I mean, he does a lot on his own as well too.
01:44 So obviously, he's asking me and me a bunch of different questions, but
01:49 a lot of work that he's doing on his own.
01:52 Coming in here early in the morning, meeting the coaches, staying late.
01:57 Even when we're kind of on our breaks,
01:59 going through walk-throughs with different coaches and stuff.
02:03 So he's a young man that definitely committed to playing football.
02:08 >> What were you doing in the break season game?
02:09 Was it weird to look over there and see those guys?
02:13 Even though you were- >> Nah, not really.
02:18 Like I said, it's the fourth team I played for.
02:20 I'd probably say, I haven't won a championship with the other teams I've
02:24 played for.
02:25 So I'd probably say mostly, man, it'll be cool to kind of see those guys.
02:30 I haven't seen a lot of them in about two years now.
02:33 So it'd be cool to see some coaches that I've really grown close to and
02:37 had great relationships with.
02:38 So just take it all in, but it'll be good to see those faces.
02:43 >> Tyron, what have you seen from Frege in addition to Ugo Lombardi?
02:46 Does he just keep showing up?
02:48 >> Yeah, he's versatile, man.
02:49 Really just an instinctual player, great in space.
02:54 I think he's one of those guys too that at least has a nose for football.
03:00 So wherever he at, the ball seems to be in that area.
03:04 So he's another guy too that's been playing nickel and playing strong and
03:09 free.
03:09 So I think the more versatile guys that we have like that,
03:13 the better off our team.
03:15 >> Tyron, Johnny Manziel has been kind of making a lot of headlines recently,
03:21 talking about his time at A&M, some of the off the field stuff that he went through.
03:26 And kind of being a young kid, throwing him into the spotlight.
03:29 Are there any times that you struggled with kind of every move you made,
03:33 everyone was watching, everyone was kind of talking about you?
03:37 >> Yeah, I mean, I spoke about that a bunch.
03:40 I think being a young kid and kind of being thrust into that kind of stardom,
03:46 at a young age, I think a lot of us weren't prepared for it.
03:50 It's not something that you kind of grew up as a kid and envision you being.
03:56 So I think a lot of guys go through it.
03:59 But kudos to him for being able to be transparent about that and
04:04 speak about that.
04:05 And it seems like he's come out on the right side of it.
04:08 So I hope and pray that he continues to kind of keep pushing forward.
04:13 >> And especially now with NIL, what's your message for these 18,
04:17 19 year old kids who are coming in and getting these bigger deals?
04:20 Just kind of being thrown into the spotlight.
04:23 >> Yeah, I'd probably say try your best to kind of keep football and
04:27 school, continue to make those things a priority.
04:31 And then in the meantime, just find a way to kind of
04:37 make yourself smarter on finance and different things like that.
04:41 So take it easy.
