01:49 >> Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Vintage Unplugged 2019.
01:54 We have a living legend, a master of the craft, Vali.
01:58 >> Only unplug my boy.
01:59 >> We unplug you, we unplug you.
02:01 Welcome, welcome, welcome.
02:03 >> Unplug me.
02:04 >> What's now, that tune was a monster, you know.
02:06 Still is a monster, you know.
02:07 >> Well, it was a kind of message, a fighting message.
02:11 We had a, oh, many moments die.
02:13 I did one before, one day, and we can't, I say wait now.
02:17 We begging these people.
02:18 No, no, no, it's war, drums of war, it's fighting.
02:20 I see this show on TV called Shackles in the Roof.
02:23 More fight.
02:24 So I say look, we ain't begging, we fighting.
02:27 If you touch Mandela, you touch all of us.
02:30 >> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:31 >> That is where I went.
02:32 >> And that's the kind of unity and strength that we're talking about.
02:34 So tell me, let me go back to the, let me go back to the beginning.
02:37 When you get in this thing?
02:38 >> Beginning?
02:39 >> Yeah, this kind of thing.
02:40 >> I want to know where it begin.
02:41 >> Well, that's why I want to find out.
02:42 You want to tell the story?
02:43 It's your story.
02:44 >> You want to find out where it is, man?
02:46 Come with me here.
02:47 >> From the beginning in the Kaiso.
02:49 >> Oh, in the Kaiso.
02:50 >> In the Kaiso, not in your whole life.
02:51 >> Well, beginning in Kaiso, I sing in Kaiso, I don't sing in my mother's belly,
02:54 but I had likes in paro.
02:57 >> Right.
02:58 >> When I heard the S-paro and seen paro, I said, boy, I like this thing, you know.
03:01 And then afterwards, I started living in Malik, and later living in a few other zones.
03:08 And I was streaming up a lot of time, and I was singing at a temple in my neighborhood.
03:12 I was singing in Kaiso.
03:13 And I went in the local thing.
03:16 But then I dropped out, and they keep telling me, boy, come and sing at the Kaiso.
03:19 You can sing, you can sing.
03:20 I said, next year, next year, next year.
03:23 And then one day, he tell me, he said, you see, you're frightened.
03:26 And I pained myself.
03:27 I said, wait, I'm like, you're already frightened.
03:30 I said to myself, what I'm going to do?
03:32 I'm going to make a record.
03:34 So if I have a record outside.
03:36 >> You had a choice.
03:37 >> I had a choice.
03:38 I had to think much of the fear and thinking.
03:40 I did that, and the rest is history.
03:43 Come outside and sing.
03:44 Bang, bang, bang.
03:45 >> And you had Winnie Young Kings, too?
03:47 >> That was about four or five years after.
03:50 I started at Winnie Young Kings.
03:52 >> So when you started, you joined Ten Something one time?
03:54 >> When I released the record, and I went by, you know, Sparrow, and they did the only audition ever did.
04:01 First time, and it was accepted.
04:03 >> You remember the song?
04:04 >> I sang my song, Jupiter.
04:06 This woman had committed to the world going to end.
04:10 The stars going to line up, and you're going to have the Jupiter effect.
04:13 I said, wait, now, let the world go to an end.
04:16 I went in on Wednesday after I had done my mask.
04:19 So that was the whole concept.
04:21 >> Priorities.
04:22 Make sure you get your priorities.
04:24 >> I went in on Wednesday, and I went.
04:27 After I had done my mask.
04:30 >> Makes sense.
04:31 Makes sense.
04:32 So tell me about working with Sparrow.
04:34 You say audition.
04:36 >> It didn't last long.
04:38 >> That was down in Valley?
04:40 >> Yeah.
04:41 We started in Seaman.
04:43 But in the very next year, we had to go down there because of some financial difficulties.
04:47 It was about four years, and then I went to Crossroads Spectacular.
04:51 It didn't last long there.
04:53 >> I remember you in Spectacular days.
04:56 Because I went to Spectacular as a youth member.
04:59 I remember you used to come on stage and mash up the place.
05:02 And I was always so amazed by the tempo.
05:05 Most people coming out singing that kind of slow, you know, 86 BPM kind of slow.
05:11 And you coming out jamming down the place, party time and all kind of things.
05:17 >> Me fighting for no man.
05:18 >> Yeah, me fighting for no man.
05:19 Going down the road.
05:21 Why is it so different and stand out?
05:24 >> I don't know.
05:25 People have their identity, their signature, their fingerprint.
05:29 Like you know a shadow, that is a shadow.
05:32 That is he.
05:33 You hear a farrow out joke, or whatever, that is he.
05:37 That's funny.
05:38 That is the DNA.
05:40 So my tempo business, that is me.
05:42 That is my DNA.
05:44 But I try to vary, too.
05:46 Because Maxi, that was a slow song.
05:48 I try to vary.
05:50 >> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
05:51 But the essence of it is always, there's always a very significant message that you're sending, a story you're telling.
05:57 >> Yeah, yeah.
05:59 >> Whether it's political, social.
06:01 You're always looking for a very interesting way you can party to it.
06:06 And then afterwards you realize --
06:08 >> I get that from Sparrow.
06:10 Listen to Sparrow.
06:12 All of his songs are melodious.
06:15 They have a melody.
06:16 Whatever he's singing, they have a melody.
06:18 Whatever I'm doing, I have a nice melody.
06:21 So it will be pleasant in the ear.
06:23 You know, this kind of dreary kind of thing.
06:25 Pleasant in the ear.
06:26 Melodious.
06:27 So I try to have a melody while doing the lyrics.
06:31 So you're getting a message.
06:33 But you're getting a sweet --
06:35 >> You're getting a joy.
06:36 >> Yeah, you're going to sit down and shaka, shaka.
06:38 You're going to dance.
06:39 But it's a very deep message.
06:41 >> I didn't realize the message until I became an adult, if I'm being honest with you.
06:43 Because I just think it's a fighting song.
06:45 I'm going to be out there to dance and fight.
06:47 >> Party time.
06:48 >> Yeah.
06:49 >> I've seen you come.
06:50 I've seen you come up to me and say, yeah, it's a party time.
06:53 It's about 15 years.
06:56 I know there's a political --
06:58 >> Political song.
06:59 >> It's a party song.
07:01 He didn't see the message.
07:03 He didn't realize it was a Dublin time.
07:05 >> You see, because we always have this idea that a Dublin time has always had to be smutty or something like that.
07:11 That's always the twist we just look for.
07:14 But that was a very interesting twist in party time because it was about political parties coming together.
07:20 >> It's about the election.
07:22 >> Yeah.
07:23 >> And they played every election.
07:25 So it's a kind of time there.
07:27 >> All right.
07:29 We have Vincent unplugged.
07:31 The master.
07:32 Bali.
07:33 Let me take a little -- Bali unplugged.
07:35 Sorry.
07:36 Change the name of the show today.
07:38 The whole name of the show changed today.
07:40 Let me take a quick break and see if we can find the name of the show.
07:43 Please dance.

09:58 [ Laughter ]
10:00 But we were talking just now about the power of politics in music
10:06 and the power of music towards politics
10:08 and especially using Calypso as the oral tradition
10:12 to send out a message to the masses.
10:15 Where are we at now?
10:18 Politically speaking, climate-wise, the way the country is set up.
10:22 How do you feel about it as a Calypsoanian who's come through the years
10:26 and spoken about it?
10:28 Well, I'm a bit concerned, you know, because concerning the fact that
10:33 a few years ago I did a song, and I believe it was prophetic in terms of the times now.
10:39 The song starts this way.
10:41 Heaven forsake, one day we will
10:45 All the oil done, all the oil done
10:48 All the gas gone
10:51 If you hear politicians cry
10:56 Boo, poo, poo, the treasury dry
11:00 People in a state, what will be of thee but
11:05 Culture is we very heart and soul
11:09 Will we treasure the treasury can hold
11:12 We don't have to cry, just diversify
11:16 All the energy, culture will supply
11:19 So, oil gone, right at that time I said, well, you could use the culture as a diversity.
11:25 Yeah, no, I feel like you didn't say it loud enough because I didn't hear any of it.
11:28 And I said, we could harvest the steel of Calypso
11:33 And the steel bar the melodies that flow
11:36 Or tap into the rhythms of the Tasa
11:40 Or cultivate the energies of Soka
11:43 High, high, high, high, we always jump up
11:47 High, high, high, unlike oil we don't drop
11:50 Wave, wave, wave, cups of the wave in action
11:54 Wave, wave, wave, wave, windmills in motion
11:58 Anytime the oil run out on we
12:01 Culture will drive the economy
12:04 If ever the gas evaporate
12:07 Culture will fuel the ship of faith
12:10 So, I'm talking to Mr. Rowley, you hear what I'm saying?
12:13 Culture, don't look for the, you look at the sandals and sneakers and all that
12:18 Look at culture
12:21 And give culture, in the diversification drive, give culture a thought
12:27 Alright, I want to challenge you or not?
12:29 You want to challenge me?
12:30 Yeah, you say give culture a thought, right?
12:31 Challenge me, we are challenging me, don't talk, sing
12:33 No, no, no, gosh, you see, we talking a talk
12:36 I sing in your words
12:37 We talking a talk, no, but you're saying give culture a chance, right?
12:40 But, when I look at things like the Dimashqara competition, for example
12:44 And the Calypso King
12:45 And you realize that the people, our own people
12:48 Don't really support it anymore
12:50 The Calypso tents, you know, these things that
12:53 Is part of our culture and for a long time made up of very big part of our culture
12:58 Now, wait, why you not tell me?
12:59 I'm asking questions, I'm telling you nothing
13:01 Culture is like the Calypso tent?
13:03 No
13:04 Culture is like Dimashqara?
13:05 Well, is that not a part of it?
13:07 Of course it's a part of it
13:09 When I say culture, it's all culture we talking about, you know
13:12 It's the culture of them Choti, them Kaisoda, Pan, them Soka
13:17 Culture
13:18 But you see, so if you say culture, it's all like a person, right?
13:20 You say culture is like a person
13:21 All them things is arms and legs and parts of the culture
13:24 Right, look at the carnival
13:25 The carnival that bring in millions in the country, you know
13:28 So we could
13:29 How to carnival?
13:31 How one in Tobago to?
13:32 You understand what I'm saying?
13:34 How to carnival?
13:35 But you know how one in Tobago is, what you say?
13:37 I want it to be, no no no
13:39 Different date, different date
13:41 They try it already, come back and get again
13:44 You understand what I'm saying?
13:45 How to work out when they try it before?
13:46 I can't remember
13:47 But you see not only
13:48 You want to know why you can't remember?
13:50 Because it probably didn't work
13:51 He's a Kaisoda
13:54 This fella is a Kaisoda, you know
13:58 He make X-Tempo in on me, you know
14:00 You are Gypsy, eh?
14:03 I had Gypsy already
14:04 Gypsy teach me to X-Tempo
14:06 I remember you so fast
14:07 Wait now, speak about Gypsy
14:10 At that time, I was watching a spectacular episode on YouTube the other day
14:15 Where he was selling some good pecan for Gypsy
14:18 Things to sing, you remember that song?
14:20 Oh, well Kaiso, that is Kaiso, eh?
14:22 That is Kaiso
14:23 Any Kaiso could sing on me, because he's
14:25 That is Kaiso
14:26 So there are no bad blood there?
14:27 No, man
14:28 There you are, Bredwyn
14:29 I just making sure, because you know
14:31 You making joke, Gypsy
14:32 The little black boy going for cane again
14:34 Oh, I'm getting it
14:36 If you haven't
14:37 Go to the Gatsch channel, check it out on YouTube
14:39 That's my bro, man
14:40 That's my bro
14:41 To me, the best president we had in Tukuwami
14:44 Kind of, the best
14:46 Officer I really worked with was Luther
14:50 But in terms of president, Gypsy was very, very good
14:53 Didn't have the time as such to really put his all into it
14:57 And how you finding out about Sculpture Man and stuff?
15:00 I ain't gonna talk about that one
15:02 Because I write a letter
15:04 Now me and his friend, eh?
15:05 But I write a open letter in the paper
15:08 That put Booton, Errol, Bali, Ballantyne and others
15:11 It's the same, because I find he was
15:13 I didn't hide
15:15 If I ever tell you something, me going be on your back, you know
15:17 And that is Gypsy
15:18 You couldn't call him
15:19 That is Gypsy, eh?
15:20 No, he needed national attention
15:22 That is Gypsy
15:23 Gypsy fell, Gypsy
15:24 Nobody can tell you Gypsy bad talk, you be on your back
15:27 He's the teller
15:28 He'll flush your face
15:29 That is me too
15:31 So we good, we good
15:32 Me and Gypsy good
15:33 All them guys in here good
15:35 Yeah?
15:36 Except you
15:37 But we now meet outside
15:39 But you're trying to give me some talk
15:41 That tune you gave me
15:42 You're way good
15:43 Let me say it
15:44 We good, we good
15:46 Watch now
15:47 I'm gonna tell you about that later, but if I tell you
15:49 The first guy I ever learned to sing
15:52 Was one of your children
15:54 You pay all this?
15:56 I didn't sing it to money
15:58 I just sing it as a fan
15:59 Why is so?
16:00 What we doing here today?
16:01 I don't understand
16:03 You know what?
16:04 I'm done, let me take a next break
16:05 I can't go through this

35:36 No peacefulness.
35:39 No happiness.
35:41 No togetherness.
35:43 I would like to see the day
35:47 when love would come to stay.

36:28 would come to stay.
36:30 One love.

45:14 [BLANK_AUDIO]
45:24 [BLANK_AUDIO]
45:34 [BLANK_AUDIO]
45:44 [BLANK_AUDIO]
45:54 So you come back.
46:09 >> Back in town with everybody.
46:11 >> You're good, you all right?
46:11 >> Everybody on vlog.
46:12 >> [LAUGH] >> [INAUDIBLE]
46:16 >> Yeah, and that's not, well,
46:17 is he sure?
46:18 Is he sure today?
46:19 I understand what you're saying.
46:20 But I wanted to go back to your early days again.
46:24 You say you started off with Sparrow.
46:28 How would you say he inspired you, or
46:33 what did you learn when he was under Sparrow?
46:36 >> We really compared him to the rest of the barge at the time.
46:39 His delivery, his topics, his, as I said before, his music.
46:45 And I was 14, my father, he used to work with CDC, and
46:50 I used to go in the Savannah, go on every carnival Sunday night.
46:54 And I witnessed something on carnival Sunday night,
46:57 Sparrow singing 10 to 1, he's the only time
47:03 somebody get anchor in a carnival competition.
47:08 When Sparrow finished with them at 10 to 1, and
47:11 the crowd started clapping, the MC want to announce the next competitor.
47:17 But the crowd won't stop clapping at all.
47:20 Sparrow run back on stage, and sing a next verse or chorus.
47:24 I'd go, they wanted to do this qualifying, but they were not written any rules.
47:28 >> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
47:28 >> And I see all that, that was the best performance I have ever seen.
47:33 And all that inspired me to,
47:35 that was part of the inspiration that he put on me.
47:38 Seeing him actually perform- >> In action.
47:41 >> Is the greatest presentation of a calypso I have ever seen.
47:48 So I will attend to one and more that night.
47:50 >> You see, when you talk about people like Sparrow, right?
47:52 I mean, great, great, we all could agree on that for sure, for sure, right?
47:58 You see any, let's say younger artists.
48:04 You have any younger artists with that kind of potential?
48:06 Bungie?
48:07 >> Yeah, I like that.
48:08 Every time I hear Bungie sing, I was hoping, I was saying,
48:12 I want to break away from the carnival.
48:16 And I hear this song, he's singing, just them two lines, I focus, I say,
48:20 where did he get that from?
48:21 Because we always think about carnival and break away and think, but
48:24 he did it in such a unique way.
48:26 And from then, from then I became a fan of his.
48:29 I just like that guy.
48:31 >> He's a lyrical genius as well.
48:33 >> Yeah, I like that guy.
48:34 >> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
48:35 But let me go younger than Bungie still, because Bungie right now-
48:38 >> This voice, this voice.
48:39 This voice, what you doing Bungie?
48:40 >> No, no, what I mean, Bungie's established, he's grown, he's established.
48:44 >> All this fella, this voice.
48:45 >> I want you to go younger than Bungie.
48:46 >> This voice, well, Machel.
48:48 Machel, I believe, single-handedly,
48:51 although he brought back, to me, he brought back the youth in the art form.
48:57 >> Machel?
48:57 >> Yeah, Machel, he brought back the youth in the art form.
49:01 >> Explain that to me, what do you mean?
49:02 >> When he, because it was the older ones and Machel.
49:08 It had, they were not a young WBI Machel.
49:11 >> Ah.
49:11 >> It was just Machel.
49:13 And he was the only one, so and he said something, he said,
49:17 I seen fellas in suit, and you know, older fellas, and he is he, and he older fellas.
49:23 And he decided this guy, this suit, and he, you know, he go to the party.
49:27 And he's a singer, right?
49:28 >> Yeah, yeah. >> He's a singer, and I believe he,
49:30 because you tell us he, they look at him, they don't look at, they won't look at us.
49:34 They look at him, and a lot of them try to get in the game, because of him, and
49:38 because of his success, right?
49:41 In terms of this, this boy has won the crown twice, voice.
49:43 >> Three times, sir.
49:45 >> Twice?
49:45 >> Three times, sir.
49:47 >> I count him bad.
49:47 >> You're counting bad.
49:48 >> It was a, it was a.
49:50 >> Triple.
49:51 >> You sure?
49:52 >> The man have a hat trick.
49:53 >> You talking about the Soca Monarch?
49:54 >> Yes.
49:55 >> Oh, the Soca, no, no, no.
49:57 >> The Indian Windy Calypso Manor?
49:59 >> That song he sang last year.
50:00 >> Yeah, for the Fire Go Burn Them, yeah.
50:03 >> Fire Go Burn Them, I don't know who get that piece of music.
50:07 But when I heard that, I said.
50:08 >> He get it?
50:09 >> I know, and I sent it to some of them, let me write it.
50:12 >> Well, yeah, yeah, they are producers, but no, he writes his music.
50:14 >> He write that?
50:15 >> He writes his music.
50:15 >> With a dummy boy.
50:17 When I hear, I tell, I tell, I tell that fella, I tell,
50:20 I said that boy go win the crown, you know?
50:22 Very, very early, I said he go win the crown, you know?
50:25 And but, he fell short, this boy beat him, right?
50:28 But that song was a masterpiece, you understand?
50:31 Masterpiece.
50:33 And believe you me, Kaiso in good hands.
50:36 Kaiso in good hands.
50:38 We have the, we have Dwayne Conner, we have the, Karina Shea.
50:43 We have this boy who won the Congress, yeah.
50:45 >> Helen.
50:45 >> Boy who, Helen.
50:46 These are, these are writers, you know?
50:49 >> And Mr.
50:49 Shock, the only one with my boy, Mr.
50:50 Shock. >> He a zombie boy.
50:51 >> [LAUGH]
50:52 >> But he's a young one, he's a young.
50:54 >> Yeah, I mean, he's part of that same generation.
50:55 I'm talking about he's part of that same generation.
50:57 >> So he sizes people.
50:58 >> Yeah, yeah, yeah, he sizes people.
50:59 He's just big.
51:00 >> He, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he, he.
51:05 He's something else.
51:06 He good, joy.
51:07 >> Spread joy. >> Spread joy.
51:08 [LAUGH] >> Spread joy.
51:11 He can.
51:12 So, the, the, the, the music in good hands.
51:15 We have no problem at all, you understand what I'm saying?
51:17 We in good hands.
51:18 >> So you think the battle has been passed successfully?
51:20 >> The battle passed already.
51:21 Yeah, man.
51:22 They're all just bringing on with it because they're gone and, and,
51:24 and I got happy for them.
51:25 You understand?
51:27 I tell you when I hear that song, that piece, I'm mad at that boy.
51:29 Thing last year, this, this, fire go burn them.
51:32 >> Yeah. >> That music, but we.
51:35 >> You think they have, have anybody you'd be interested in working with?
51:38 >> Me? Anybody would, anyone.
51:40 >> Anyone. >> Anyone.
51:40 You're there.
51:41 >> Of course.
51:42 [LAUGH] >> You see, there's the spirit.
51:43 And I find, you know, sometimes people complain that they,
51:45 they don't have that, that level of camaraderie in the industry.
51:48 You know, you hear, always hear about the, the fight and
51:50 the people who don't want this one to succeed and that one to succeed.
51:53 >> A thing I don't like.
51:54 Man, I don't like it at all.
51:55 The thing about them is writers, and them is singers, and them is.
52:01 Shopping list, all of these guys on here.
52:02 Who doesn't write, who don't write, who doesn't buy with teeth,

52:18 >> But, but, but, but, but.
52:18 >> You shouldn't be in the same class as me.
52:19 >> I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not.
52:22 >> Borrow. >> Borrow.
52:23 >> Borrow. >> Borrow.
52:23 Who does borrow?
52:24 >> [LAUGH] >> Who does borrow?
52:27 >> Right, right. >> But to look at that person and

52:33 Singing Zandra, them is no thing.
52:34 What you tell me about?
