00:10 Thriving within the little space of this urban backyard garden is an assortment of various
00:15 plants and herbs which all add to a flavorful end product. Devon Samlalsing has integrated
00:21 a unique ecological system with financial benefits into the city of San Fernando.
00:27 It was basically a grassland, all the rubble, rubbish and everything from construction was
00:32 here and it's really trying to come here and build something like a food rain forest.
00:38 According to the United Nations, by the year 2050, two-thirds of the world's inhabitants
00:43 will become city dwellers. But Samlalsing's sights are already beyond the city's limits.
00:50 Basically a forest popped up in a couple years and that is all integrated to build an overstory
00:55 for that to drop, to build a soil layer and so you kind of manage how you grow that and
01:01 how it becomes sustainable. So here's basically a pilot project on a very small scale but
01:07 it can be amplified into utilizing a large farmland.
01:11 The university graduate however says there continues to be a growing cost to living space.
01:16 There's not looked upon in a high regard which I think is unfortunate because we all eat
01:22 and we all need to eat and especially where we reach right now in terms of the country
01:26 and with forex and we have such a high import bill.
01:29 He's however crafted an unconventional but tantalizing way of raising awareness about
01:35 the sector.
01:36 I haven't been bartending for very long but I have reached some level of accomplishment
01:46 in a very short amount of time and I've really been using that to be like well this all comes
01:51 from here, it comes from the ground. It is important to get these things involved, get
01:55 more people involved.
01:56 His drinks spike with homegrown ingredients not only earn him a living but also international
02:02 acclaim.
02:03 There have been quite a number of competitions for home bartenders, bartenders, Angostura
02:08 had one as well. I won one of the international ones I placed there and I also placed in some
02:16 of the other global competitions that they have and it's all using ingredients from here.
02:20 Devon has already clipped some of his own homegrown herbs so it's time to put him to
02:24 the test and see what type of drink this bartender can whip up.
02:29 So we have, this is dill and anise infused water. I also have blue pea syrup here, well
02:40 blue bouquet syrup. It is actually made, these guys actually supply some of the ingredients
02:45 too so it's made from some of the flowers here and I just picked some fresh herbs.
02:52 Cheers!
02:53 Yes, let me tell the story.
02:56 This is your straw by the way.
02:58 My straw?
