00:00 is a long-term goal to manage this land with a mosaic burn that makes it easy to control,
00:07 doesn't have it overgrowing, doesn't create the bushfire dangers that we created in the past,
00:13 and put foundations in place to do more cultural burning all year round in a safe, easy manner
00:21 because of the low intensity. Here we are at Tura Beach, we've just completed a cultural burn with
00:26 the Bega Lock, L-A-L-C, and behind me is what's left of about an acre burn and it's got to be
00:37 the easiest burn I've ever done, low intensity, led by the local community who did a fantastic
00:46 job of keeping it a low height, easy burn. We've still got wildlife, we've still got insects,
00:53 we've got birds coming back in, it's just been an awesome experience. Overall it's a much slower
00:58 moving fire to watch take place. We need to do a lot more of it actively in the community,
01:02 there's no doubt about that. Brings back natives and sort of puts a balance back into the landscape.
01:10 The way we work is we clear around all trees, logs, create control lines,
01:16 and protect anything like, all these larger trees we need to protect, because that's our mother
01:22 trees. So we basically prep all around them and any logs, that's a habitat for small creatures
01:27 and stuff. So we go through and methodically clear everything around that needs clearing.
01:32 The fire should slowly move out into a circle pattern and it should be like, the way the fire
01:38 works is the fire should be no faster than any bugs that's going away from it. So the bugs,
01:43 if the fire's moving faster than the bugs, then the fire's too fast for what it needs to be on
01:48 the ground. So the way this is, the way it's been burnt over years, our fires that we call,
01:54 we call them a reset burns. So we're trying to reset the natural state of things. So we do a
02:00 reset burn to try and reset it back to how it's meant to be in the country type. So it might
02:05 happen the first reset burn, so it might take another reset burn after that to actually restore
02:11 it back to how it naturally should be. So Tanya and Leticia with the Bega Lauk and here doing
02:22 cultural burns. What are you trying to teach Leticia? How to clear our land and do a cultural
02:29 burn. Yeah, keep the land clean and clear and look after animals and plants. I've got to say,
02:38 it's awesome having some ladies from fire rescue here, some ladies from the
02:41 lands council and just helping, you know, improve everything.
