Deadly Maui Wildfires Kill 36

A series of wildfires on the Hawaiian island of Maui, sparked by undetermined causes and fueled by strong winds from Hurricane Dora, have led to the death of at least 36 people. The fires, which began earlier this week, have devastated the historic town of Lahaina, causing substantial damage to over 271 structures. Additionally, around 1,000 acres of agricultural land in Maui's Upcountry, including Haleakala National Park, have been scorched. The wildfires have resulted in power and cellphone outages across the western part of the island. Evacuations have been ordered for 13 communities, with search-and-rescue efforts supported by federal teams. President Biden has mobilized federal resources to aid in recovery efforts. The fires have prompted concerns over the impact on tourism, as Maui is a popular destination, with approximately 1.5 million visitors in the first half of the year. The Lieutenant Governor issued an emergency proclamation and Hawaii's National Guard has been activated to assist in managing the situation.
