Disappointing to lose a match we controlled: Jason Holder

  • last year
West Indies captain Jason Holder said his batsmen need to take more responsibility after they lost to Australia by 15 runs in the Cricket World Cup on Thursday. Chasing 289 for victory, West Indies made a poor start before Shai Hope (68) and Nicholas Pooran (40) rebuilt the innings, but the Mitchell Starc-led Australian attack restricted them to 273-9. “Guys just need to learn from the mistakes that they make,” Holder told reporters. 00:02 - Point it was looking that the West Indies would go on
00:08 and cause Australia a lot of problems.
00:10 To not beat them from such a strong position,
00:12 does it feel like you've really missed an opportunity there?
00:15 - Yeah, we definitely missed an opportunity.
00:17 I just think that's sport,
00:19 you know, we've just got to learn from it.
00:21 Yeah, it's a bit disappointing to be losing a game
00:23 like that when we were full control of the game,
00:25 but you know, these things happen.
00:29 - Jason, what does it mean to have a pace attack
00:31 like you have right now to be able to call upon them?
00:33 And how far do you think they have to go
00:35 to sort of match the pace attacks of before?
00:39 And you know, there's been a lot of nostalgia
00:40 that they've raised.
00:42 - Yeah, I think the boys are bowling really well
00:43 at the moment.
00:44 The good thing for us, we've been getting some early wickets
00:47 and you know, we've been able to get wickets
00:48 in the middle as well.
00:49 I just think we just need to be aggressive,
00:51 continue to be aggressive, smart aggression,
00:54 and you know, just continue to look to take wickets.
00:58 - Andre looked to be, you know, some discomfort
01:01 with his knee again towards the end of the Australian innings
01:05 and you also sort of cramping up.
01:07 So any fitness issues?
01:09 - Yeah, we've got one or two niggles in the camp.
01:12 You know, obviously Andre's been struggling
01:13 with his knees for a long time now.
01:15 It's just something we're just trying to manage.
01:16 You know, we just try to manage them as best as we possibly
01:18 can and keep him on the park.
01:20 I'm fine.
01:21 - Jason, five DRS referrals, a lot of confusion.
01:27 (laughs)
01:28 It's the system working.
01:29 Did you have any concerns with the standard of umpiring
01:32 or how that played out?
01:33 It was bizarre.
01:34 - I think all I'll say is that I just found ourselves
01:36 a bit unlucky to be on the other end
01:38 at all the decisions.
01:40 You know, I guess honest mistakes from the umpires
01:43 and I want to get into the officiating part, you know,
01:46 but it's just ironic or I don't even know
01:49 what to say about it.
01:51 But it is a funny situation where all of them
01:53 went against us and then we had to review them.
01:55 But I guess it's part of the game again.
01:57 - Jason, from four for 38 or whatever Australia
02:00 were there early on,
02:01 did you kind of feel like you let the game slip there?
02:04 - Not really.
02:06 Partnership's a part of cricket, you know,
02:07 I thought Steve batted really well and, you know,
02:09 the guys came in and batted around him.
02:10 You know, Alex Currie played a really good knock as well.
02:13 Also Nathan Cottener, you know, he came on,
02:16 he was very, very positive.
02:17 Things went his way early on and, you know,
02:20 we put him down, I think 60 odd, you know,
02:21 which in the end, you know,
02:22 proved a little bit costly for us.
02:24 But having said that, I think,
02:26 yeah, what I didn't like to continue to take wickets,
02:28 but it happened for us today.
02:29 But I think there are lots of positives,
02:31 as I said before, for us, you know,
02:32 I think we showed a lot of aggression up front
02:34 to basically rattle their top order.
02:36 But, you know, again, you know,
02:38 partnerships do build in cricket
02:40 and it's well played to Australia.
02:42 - And just on Mitchell Stark,
02:43 I think he might've ended up with three for one
02:45 off his last couple of overs there.
02:47 Like, just how hard is he to face
02:49 when he's got the old ball and he's bowling to the tail?
02:52 - I think he bowled well.
02:54 You know what you get with Stark,
02:55 he comes back and he goes quite full.
02:58 You know, credit must be given to him.
02:59 You know, he came back and bowled a really good spell.
03:01 I guess it was just his day to day.
03:03 - Jason, I believe the ball before Chris Gowell
03:07 was out as well, it was actually shown to be a no ball.
03:09 If it had been called,
03:10 obviously that would have been a free hit
03:11 that he got out on.
03:12 Is that frustrating to learn as well, mate?
03:14 (Jason laughs)
03:16 - I saw it on the screen in the dressing room
03:18 and I just laughed, man.
03:19 I couldn't believe it.
03:20 But again, I guess things didn't go our way today.
03:25 - Thanks.
03:26 - Jason, are you just a little concerned
03:30 about the game awareness
03:31 of some of the batsmen in that middle order?
03:33 Especially, like you said, it is a missed opportunity,
03:35 but at the times at which they got out
03:37 and how do you rectify that?
03:39 Or how do you discuss that?
03:41 - I think learning just needs to take place.
03:42 You know, guys just need to learn
03:44 from the mistakes that they make.
03:45 You know, take a little bit more responsibility.
03:48 And Chasen especially, you know,
03:50 just need to take responsibility.
03:51 And it's important that one of the top four batters
03:53 be there at the very, very end.
03:54 I think one thing that we could take
03:56 from the Australians' performances
03:57 is that Steve batted quite deep.
04:00 And that's something that we need
04:01 for a little bit more top order.
04:02 I think Shea Hopkins has been outstanding in that regard,
04:05 you know, but it didn't go his way today.
04:07 You know, I think credit must be given to Australia.
04:09 I thought they came back and bowled really well
04:10 with the old ball.
04:11 And it created problems for us, you know,
04:13 we had to decide what we wanted to do
04:14 in terms of playing it or taking it on
04:16 or, you know, just knocking it around, you know,
04:18 but credit must be given.
