01:18 Andrea Warwick and her husband Leonard have just welcomed their first child, Trudy.
01:22 They live in Kasoola, a suburb of Sydney, Australia.
01:25 Leonard is a firefighter, but while he spends his time at work rescuing people, at home,
01:30 he's controlling and violent to his wife.
01:33 He quickly becomes possessive of their newborn daughter.
01:35 He doesn't let anyone enter the house or see her, even Andrea's friends and family.
01:40 On Andrea's birthday, her sisters and their children try to visit, enraging Leonard.
01:45 And they knocked on the door, and he wasn't going to allow them to come in.
01:49 So I just pushed past him and I said, "They're coming in."

01:54 And he had his fireman boots on, and he stood on my leg and just thrashed into my arm.

02:10 After years of enduring an abusive relationship, Andrea finds a strength to get out and tell

02:20 Judy is shocked to hear about Leonard's violence.
02:22 That was the first I knew.
02:23 And I said to Andrea, "Why didn't you tell me?"

02:30 Because of how badly Leonard hurt her, Andrea couldn't get Trudy out of the house.

03:57 Andrea makes phone calls, but no one has seen Stephen since the night of February 21st.

04:04 Police come to investigate the house, and they find specks of blood in his bedroom.
04:08 Six days later, a group of friends are out boating at Cowan Creek in the Cooringai Chase
04:13 National Park in northern Sydney.
04:15 Suddenly, they see something floating in the water.
04:18 They call the police, who take over and start their investigation.
04:22 Andrea says, "We found Stephen."
04:26 And I just automatically said, "Oh, is he alright?"
04:29 He says, "We've got some bad news."
04:31 That's when they told me.
04:35 Police find that Stephen Blanchard was shot and killed at home in the middle of the night.
04:40 The attacker likely used a silencer to avoid waking up the rest of the family.
04:44 Then they drove to Cowan Creek and used a boat so they could drop his body in the middle
04:48 of the water.
04:50 His body was weighed down with bricks, and investigators find they were tied with a fireman's
04:54 pocket line, but they don't discover any other evidence to help them catch the killer.
04:59 The Blanchard family now has to face life without Stephen.

05:53 Four months after Stephen Blanchard's murder, Justice David Opus is having dinner with his
05:58 wife, Kristen, and his kids Josh and Persia when the doorbell rings.
06:02 His son Josh tells him to stay at the table and not answer it, but he does, and when he
06:07 goes to greet the person at the door, he is shot with a .22 caliber rifle.
06:11 A man runs away from the scene, and Justice Opus' family rushes to his side, but it's
06:16 too late.
06:17 After the phone call from the police had told me that Judge Opus was murdered, when I put
06:23 the receiver down, I thought, "Something's going on here.
06:26 There's got to be a connection."
06:30 Andrea is already suspicious because Leonard was angry at Justice Opus for restricting
06:35 his access to Trudy.
06:36 Andrea tells police she thinks Leonard is involved.
06:40 Investigators search his locker at the fire station where he works.
06:42 They find newspapers with headlines about the murder, but no physical evidence that
06:46 can link him to the scene.
06:48 Leonard also refuses to answer any questions from the police.
06:51 As a family court justice, David Opus dealt with many people who could want revenge for

07:17 Another family court justice, Richard G., takes over Justice Opus' cases after his
07:21 murder, and his family fears they could be next.
07:24 "Well I knew that Justice Opus had been shot dead, and then dad said they've offered
07:30 me the job to replace him.
07:32 And I just had this, I don't know, call it sixth sense that something was going to
07:38 happen to us."
07:40 But years pass without any other attacks, and the paranoia begins to fade.
07:45 Andrea tries to give Trudy a happy childhood, but the nightmare is far from over.
07:50 March 6th, 1984, almost four years after Justice Opus' murder, Justice Richard G. is at
07:56 home with his children, Allison and Stephen.
07:59 It's around 1.45am, and they're all asleep.
08:01 Suddenly, a bomb goes off, destroying most of the home.
08:05 "I just heard a really loud clap of thunder, the loudest I'd ever heard.
08:10 Just saw debris all in my room, and it was just like I'd woken up in a movie or a nightmare."
08:16 Allison finds her brother, and they frantically try to get out of the house, desperately hoping
08:20 their dad also made it out.
08:22 They make it out safely through a window.
08:24 They find their dad around the back of the house, injured, but alive.
08:28 "He was covered in debris dust.
08:31 Over his whole body, looked like a ghost, except that he had blood pouring down his
08:36 legs from his thighs.
08:38 I just cried, and I just felt really sad.
08:41 Just looks like a war zone."
08:42 Miraculously, the whole family survives, but it's clear someone is still out for revenge.
08:50 Right away, police warn other judges to check their homes and cars, and they search family
08:54 courts across Australia.
08:56 Investigators also look into all the cases that Justice Richard G. oversaw.
09:01 Andrea again tells them that Leonard is the culprit.
09:04 Justice G. had further restricted Leonard's access to Trudy, and he even issued an arrest
09:08 warrant when he failed to return her.
09:10 "This was an attack on the administration of justice in Australia.
09:14 Judges would make a ruling against him, and he responded with lethal force."
09:19 "We wanted justice served.
09:22 It's Leonard John Warwick.
09:24 I said, 'He is the only person.'
09:27 Every time I spoke to him, it's him."
09:30 Andrea knows that her ex's violence is getting closer and closer to her, and she has to continuously

09:43 the bomb at Justice G.'s house.
09:45 But in the middle of the night before Leonard was supposed to appear, the family law court
09:50 building itself is largely destroyed as another bomb detonates.
09:54 Fear and panic is spreading throughout Sydney.
09:57 Again, Andrea alerts investigators about Leonard's connection to the attacks, but still, he continues
10:02 to walk free.
10:03 It becomes clear to Andrea that no one can keep her and Trudy safe from him, not even
10:08 the police.
10:09 He doesn't leave evidence behind, and unless someone can get him to stop, anyone with connections
10:14 to the family court is in danger.
10:16 "We did know that the offender was Warwick.
10:19 Everything was done that could be done at the time.
10:22 We couldn't gather enough evidence to charge him then."
10:26 As Justice Richard G. recovers from his injuries after the bombing at his house, Ray Watson
10:31 takes over his cases, including Leonard and Andrea's.
10:35 Even with fear and suspicion growing, Andrea still respects the visitation rights set by
10:39 the court.
10:40 Trudy loves her father and is happy to see him, but Andrea has to keep returning to court
10:45 because Leonard still ignores the court's orders.

11:03 Almost three months after the family court bombing, Justice Watson gets ready to leave
11:07 for work.
11:08 His wife Pearl opens the door of their house, unknowingly triggering a bomb that was fixed
11:12 to their front door.
11:13 Ray Watson survives, but Pearl is killed instantly.
11:17 The people of Sydney, stunned and heartbroken, demand answers.
11:22 After Pearl Watson's murder, investigators ramp up their efforts.
11:25 A joint federal-state police task force is established, and a half a million dollar reward
11:30 is offered.
11:31 "All family court judges, their courts, and their families will have a 24-hour surveillance
11:37 until this matter is resolved."
11:39 "We had federal surveillance officers and state surveillance officers.
11:43 We used up virtually every surveillance officer in New South Wales in Australia."
11:49 Surveillance officers follow the prime suspect, Leonard Warwick, desperate to find something
11:53 they can use to catch him and put a stop to all the attacks.
11:57 In the middle of the night, they follow him to a national park.
11:59 "He kept going back to the national park on a total of 11 occasions.
12:04 We went in with police dogs after he left when he was way out of the area.
12:09 It was never really ironed out as to what he was doing there.
12:12 I put it down to the fact that he was playing games with the surveillance officers."
12:18 February 10, 1985, police tell Andrea there was an attempt on her lawyer's life with
12:23 another bomb.
12:24 Fortunately, it was found before it could detonate, and no one was hurt.
12:28 But shortly after, she gets a call from her lawyer, Gary Watts.
12:32 "And he said, 'I won't be able to act on your behalf.'
12:36 And that was it.
12:39 He was scared.
12:40 He was frightened.
12:41 And I don't blame him."
12:43 "I've never met a person as dangerous as what Leonard Warwick is.
12:47 He stopped at nothing in his quest to keep custody of his daughter.
12:52 He took it personally.
12:53 Because everybody that stood in his way, he went after all of them."
12:58 Fear is spreading throughout Australia.
13:01 Anyone could be a target, and no one can help Andrea.
13:04 Even police are scared about their involvement in the investigation.
13:07 "One of the surveillance officers said, 'Look, I think we've got a worry, because Warwick's
13:12 sitting in the park watching police headquarters.'
13:14 A witness that I interviewed said he was looking for my address.
13:18 The wife and the kids, I had his photo, his police photo on the fridge, that if he was
13:22 ever sighted in the neighborhood, they would notify us immediately."
13:26 As Leonard intimidates the police with his own surveillance, the attacks keep getting
13:30 closer to home for Andrea.
13:32 All the while, she tries to shield Trudy from the violence that haunts them, and it's taking
13:37 a massive toll.
13:38 Leonard already has his eyes on his next target, as he makes phone calls to Andrea's sister,
13:43 Trudy, threatening to kill her and her children.
13:46 "The police told me, 'You're next on his hit list.'
13:50 Every noise, I had to wake up.
13:52 We were looking over our shoulder all that time.
13:55 We were going to be next."
13:57 Even though Andrea and the police believe Leonard is responsible for all the attacks,
14:01 they still haven't been able to find anything they can use to arrest him.
14:05 They've tried surveillance, offering reward money, and putting numerous detectives and
14:09 resources into their efforts, but nothing is working.
14:12 Andrea is terrified.
14:14 Leonard stalks her, often parking in front of the house, and watching her every move.
14:18 One day, he shows up at the house and yells at Andrea, demanding to see Trudy for an unscheduled
14:24 visit.
14:25 When she says no, he grabs Trudy anyway and starts to run.
14:28 But Andrea chases him, refusing to let him take her away.
14:31 In response, he punches Andrea in the face.
14:34 Shocked, she quickly gets Trudy and runs back inside, locking the doors behind them.
14:40 Andrea is desperate to get herself and her family away from him and his violence.
14:44 Even with the threat to her life, Andrea's sister Judy steps in.
14:48 A devout Jehovah's Witness, Judy turns to her congregation for help.
14:52 They need to escape in secret to stay safe from Leonard.
14:55 Her congregation steps up, helping them move away so they could hide.
14:59 "We didn't tell anyone why we were moving."
15:03 "Even the drivers of the truck didn't know where we were heading until an hour before
15:08 we got to Foster.
15:09 No one knew.
15:10 We sort of made it a fun game for the kids.
15:13 A drill.
15:14 If ever Len found us, we had an escape plan to get out."
15:22 Andrea does all she can to protect her daughter from Leonard and the destruction that follows
15:26 them.
15:27 Leonard doesn't know where Andrea and Trudy went, but he won't give up his search.
15:30 He makes multiple phone calls to members of Judy's congregation, demanding to know where
15:35 they are.
15:36 "There was a third call.
15:37 He was very upset.
15:39 He again said, 'You must know where she's gone.'
15:43 I said, 'Listen, mate, we don't know where she's gone.
15:46 Do not call here again.'"
15:49 July 1985.
15:51 Five months after Andrea and Trudy made their escape.
15:54 Leonard hasn't found them, and there haven't been any more attacks.
15:57 But there are two break-ins at the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in Kisoola, southwest
16:02 of Sydney.
16:03 During one of the break-ins, a window shatters and cuts the intruder.
16:06 They leave blood on the carpet, but with the limited capabilities of the time, investigators
16:11 can only determine that it's O-positive, and they can't use it to charge anyone.
16:15 They don't find that anything was stolen, and no one knows why the intruder broke in
16:20 or what they did.
16:21 It's Sunday, July 21, 1985.
16:24 The congregation starts their service like usual.
16:27 There are over 100 members in the building, including Joy Weix and her husband, Graham.
16:32 "We were holding hands, and I thought, 'Oh, his hand would be really cold.'
16:36 So we had a small rug over our knee, and I pulled it up over our hands, and he turned
16:41 to me and whispered, 'I love you.'
16:43 And that was the last thing I remember."
16:45 "My first memories was really in ICU.
16:51 I had already been into surgery.
16:53 I recall asking, 'Where's my husband?
16:56 Where's my husband?' all afternoon.
16:58 A doctor came and told me, 'We do have bad news for you.'
17:04 And I'd been asking and asking, and I must have already realized that he wasn't going
17:11 to be there."
17:13 A bomb was placed under the stage at the Kingdom Hall, timed to go off during the service.
17:18 Graham Weix is killed, and dozens more have life-threatening injuries, including little
17:23 children.
17:24 The Blanchard family is devastated to hear the news.
17:27 "I just burst out crying.
17:29 I could not speak for a long time."
17:32 "They announced that the hall had been bombed.
17:35 My daughter Natasha was standing next to me, and she said, 'Mum, that was Len.'
17:39 My whole body was shaking."
17:41 "And I rang down to the bomb squad.
17:43 They had their suspicions.
17:45 And I said, 'That's my congregation.'
17:47 And they said, 'Oh, that's what the connection is.'"
17:51 Joy Weix had helped the Blanchards pack for their escape, and Andrea blames herself for
17:55 Graham's death and all the injuries at the Kingdom Hall.
17:58 Police take a search warrant to Leonard's house, and they find handwritten notes with
18:02 phone numbers of Jehovah's Witness members.
18:04 But he refuses to answer any questions or give a blood sample.

18:17 The attacks continue to follow Andrea everywhere she goes, even when she escapes Leonard's

20:25 After getting everything he wanted, and all the destruction and suffering he caused, Leonard
20:29 lets his target Trudy go easily.
20:32 Finally, Andrea is reunited with her daughter, but they still aren't truly free of Leonard.
20:37 As Trudy grows older, she gets a better understanding of what happened when she was little.
20:42 From the beginning, Trudy's mom has repeatedly told police that Leonard Warwick is the man
20:47 who terrorized Sydney for years.
20:49 Despite her efforts, he thinks he will get away with everything, and for decades, he
20:54 does, until one mistake will come back to haunt him.
20:57 It becomes one of the coldest cases in Australian history.
21:01 Andrea had no one to turn to.
21:03 But in 2012, investigative crime journalists Debbie Marshall and Ross Coulthart hear of
21:08 the case and decide to investigate.
21:10 But everywhere they turn for information, they're warned.
21:13 The prime suspect is still free, and pursuing the story could get them killed.
21:18 Debbie Marshall even tries to interview Leonard, and he threatens her.
21:22 But the journalists work together with Andrea Blanchard to bring attention back to the case,
21:26 all of them refusing to back down in their fight for justice.
21:30 With the help of their work and the release of Debbie Marshall's book, investigators
21:34 reopen the cold case.
21:36 Kevin Woods, the former lead investigator, never forgot about the family court bomber.
21:41 He remembers the bloodstain left on the carpet before the Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall
21:45 bombing, when an intruder was cut with a glass from a window.
21:48 They didn't know it at the time, but the attacker broke in to plant the bomb.
21:52 Kevin Woods tells the current investigators about the blood sample, which could be the
21:56 key to exposing the person behind all the attacks.
22:00 Detectives ask Trudy if she would give a DNA sample for them to compare it with.
22:04 At first, she hesitates.
22:06 She still loves her father, and she's worried about betraying him.
22:10 She knows it could send him to jail if it's a match.
22:12 But she wants the truth for herself, and for all the other victims' families.
22:17 In an interview, she says, "People need answers, closure.
22:21 Innocent people were killed over me.
22:23 If you commit something like these crimes, you should be held accountable for it.

22:29 With advancements in DNA technology, they are able to match the blood with Trudy's,
