00:00 -It's good to get a win.
00:05 I thought our first units, both offensively and
00:09 defensively, really came out strong and played well.
00:13 It was good to see the offense first drive of the game, take it right down the field,
00:17 let them play, get a touchdown. Obviously with
00:22 a few new pieces, it was good to see Derek out there. It was good to see Mike get a catch across the middle.
00:26 There were some good things that happened there. I thought our second
00:30 series offensively, again, we were able to take the ball down the field
00:34 and get points. Then really
00:38 honestly I thought it kind of went downhill from there. I don't think we executed very well
00:42 for a good chunk of the game.
00:46 Then obviously there at the end with the
00:50 two minute drive and then we get the
00:54 takeaway there at the end of the game to seal it.
00:58 Kind of the same thing on defense.
01:03 I thought initially we started out strong,
01:07 got a couple of stops with the first unit, which was good,
01:11 and then probably I'll say
01:15 we give up the deep ball, which kind of changed
01:19 the momentum of the game. That was
01:23 not good. Then as we got into the second half, I just thought we made too many
01:27 mistakes in the second half. Too many mistakes that will end up costing us
01:31 games. Like I said, glad we got the win
01:35 because I think this league's all about
01:39 winning. Winning in the preseason is
01:43 important. I was glad that our guys were able to do that. It was nice to see
01:47 a groupie get a chance to get a kick in that situation and be able to knock it
01:51 through. I'll take your questions. -Is there something
01:55 in particular you liked about the way Derek Carr played? -I just thought he was
01:59 in control, poised, threw it to the open guy.
02:03 Kind of the way you would want your
02:07 quarterback to operate the offense. Did a nice job stepping up
02:11 in the pocket a couple times. I thought overall
02:15 it was a good experience. -When you're evaluating the team
02:19 after each practice and reviewing the field and everything, does
02:23 this match what you've been seeing from that starting 11, especially the starting
02:28 five offensive linemen? Or was this even an improvement over the consistency?
02:32 -I think really on both
02:36 sides of the ball when we've had all of our guys out there,
02:40 I think it's been a highly competitive situation.
02:44 I would say
02:48 we operated pretty well when we had our
02:52 basically our starting 11 out there. Really on both sides of the ball.
02:56 -When you're evaluating Galante, does his work in the slot impact how you look at him
03:00 on the outside? Are those kind of like two different evaluations?
03:04 -I'd say probably two different evaluations.
03:08 I think overall
03:12 I think Galante's had a really good camp. I think he's still
03:16 used to playing inside in the slot. And look, that's
03:20 just part of the deal with growing up
03:24 and playing in our league. It's hard to have... If everybody's just
03:28 an outside corner, somebody's gotta go inside.
03:32 He's going in there and getting some work.
03:36 He'll learn from his mistakes. He'll keep getting better from it.
03:40 -Did he get a seat on Kendrick Miller? -No, he had a knee sprain.
03:44 I'm gonna go to the gym and check it out, but that's really all I have.
03:48 -Did you like the way that Ellis Merriweather kind of responded? -I did. I did. I thought he
03:52 got in there and ran the ball pretty well. I thought he ran the ball really physically.
03:56 He had a really nice run that got called back.
04:00 Got called back, but it was a good run.
04:04 -What do you think about A.T. Ferris' play today? -It was good to see.
04:09 I thought he stepped up and caught the ball well. Don't like him reaching for the
04:13 ball there at the end on his first touchdown, but it was good. We had some young
04:17 guys that scored their first NFL touchdowns. We had some
04:21 guys that kicked their first NFL field goal.
04:25 It was good to see some of those young guys make some plays.
04:29 Look, we're in a race to improve between now to week two.
04:33 We've got a few days before we get on a plane and head out to
04:37 LA and get ready to work against the Chargers.
04:41 We have a lot of things we've got to improve on. -Having gone through
04:45 the draft and offseason acquisitions, which acquisitions have you made
04:49 that you're most excited about and why? -Look, I mean
04:53 I'm excited about all the acquisitions.
04:57 You know what I mean? That's why we went out and got those guys.
05:01 I like them all. There's
05:05 different values that I think they bring to the team.
05:09 Yeah, I mean I like all those guys or else
05:13 we wouldn't have gone out and got them. -What did you think of Jake
05:17 Hainer's efforts? -Early on I thought it was a little erratic,
05:21 but I thought as he kind of settled down I thought he got better.
05:25 He's kind of that way.
05:29 You guys have been watching him. He's got a little moxie to him.
05:33 When the game was on the line he ended up getting us down the field
05:37 and putting points on the board. It was disappointing on the
05:41 two point play that we snapped the ball early and don't get a chance
05:45 to at least try to execute in that situation.
05:49 I thought that was probably
05:53 the one take I'd take away from this. I thought we had too many self-inflicted wounds.
05:58 Not with the first groups, but as we
06:02 got into the second and third wave I thought there was way too many self-inflicted
06:06 wounds that we got to clean up. -Did Dennis Erdrich have done anything better?
06:10 -Let me look at the tape. I'm sure there's probably a couple of things that he could have done better,
06:14 but 11 plays and whatever it was, 80 yards
06:18 and a touchdown is pretty good. -Dennis, I know the situation is different with
06:22 Trevor and Cesar since Trevor has less experience and he played much
06:26 longer, but with Cesar is that a good sign that you guys have been seeing the development
06:30 coming off that injury that you need to see from him in camp? -Yeah.
06:34 Look, I mean the plan all along
06:38 was 10 to 15 plays with the first
06:42 group, give or take. There was a couple of guys that we might want to get out a little bit
06:46 earlier, a couple of guys that we might want to leave in a little bit longer.
06:50 It's kind of how the game played out, but
06:54 in response to Trevor, yeah, the
06:58 plan was to get him about 20 plays. I don't know what the final count ended up being.
07:02 Probably closer to 24, but 21,
07:06 22, something like that. -How about Cesar in particular though? Has it been a good
07:10 you like what you're seeing in these two months? -Yeah. I like what I've
07:14 seen. Now, you know, I'm sure we'll look at the tape and
07:18 see some things that we gotta improve on, but yeah, I like
07:22 where we're at. -Dennis, you kind of talk a lot about turnovers. It's nice to see you guys
07:26 kind of take advantage of the opportunities that we're given, especially
07:30 in the drill coming down with that one. -Yeah. We
07:34 talked a lot about taking the ball away. I think
07:39 we had two of them today.
07:43 I think takeaways are contagious. I think
07:47 when you start getting them, they tend to come in bunches.
07:51 Everything's about the ball. We gotta continue to emphasize that as coaching staff and
07:55 make sure our guys understand the importance of the ball, both protecting the ball
07:59 and trying to take it away. -What were your thoughts on A.T. Perry's day? Is this kind of a
08:03 confidence building moment for him? -Yeah. I thought it was good.
08:07 A couple of contested catches. I thought he was able to
08:11 run down the field, put his foot in the ground, come back, and create some separation
08:15 and then be able to make a catch in a contested environment.
08:19 Yeah, I thought he played well. -Was it the same knee that
08:23 Kendrae was dealing with this offseason? -I believe so.
08:27 -Dennis, what about the way that you won?
08:31 Because it's been a hot and humid camp for everybody here.
08:35 It seems like everyone, especially at the end, they chipped in.
08:39 -Yeah. Well, look.
08:43 Preseason game, when we didn't get the two point, we could
08:47 have said let's get out of this thing, save our pads
08:51 a little bit. I thought it was important for us to take the timeouts and see if we could
08:55 we figured if we got them three and out
08:59 and they had to punt the ball back to us, we'd probably get the ball with about
09:03 15 to 20 seconds left and maybe
09:07 we could get ourselves into a long field goal range and see if
09:11 Groupie could hit a long one and our guys on defense
09:15 made a play. You never know when those plays are gonna come. You just gotta keep playing.
09:20 -ADA on James' three sacks, how much of that
09:24 is on the offensive line? -I think we gotta look at that.
09:28 I'm gonna reserve judgment until I see exactly what happened
09:32 on the tape. Generally
09:36 when things like that happen, there's a little bit of blame to go around.
09:40 We'll look at it and see what we thought. -You said you were looking
09:44 forward to seeing Titan and Jimmy Graham out there. What did he show you?
09:48 -Well, look.
09:52 I thought he had one catch. I thought he ran a nice
09:56 route, got the ball vertical. I thought he did a couple of good
10:00 things in the run game in terms of blocking.
10:04 I didn't like the call against him.
10:08 Look, I'll go back and look at the tape. I thought
10:12 overall pretty good.
