Mitchell Marsh and David Warner plundered half-centuries as Australia won their first Twenty20 cricket World Cup with an eight-wicket victory over New Zealand in Dubai on November 14. Australia, a five-time winner of the 50-over ICC World Cup, was in poor form in the T20 format leading into the tournament and Warner was struggling to get game time in the Indian Premier League. The form turned around quickly when it counted, with Australia winning all but one game and Warner winning the award for player of the series. (Video courtesy: ICC; Images: AP)

00:00 How did you win six tosses out of seven and how important the toss factor in this tournament?
00:05 Yeah, that did that did play a big factor to be honest. I
00:08 Tried to play it down as much as I could because I thought at some point in the tournament
00:12 I'm gonna lose a toss and we'll have to bat first
00:14 But it did play a big part the you saw at the at the end there the dew
00:18 Factor the slow balls weren't holding in the wicket as much it was I don't know how I did it
00:23 Maybe maybe it was just fate.
00:25 David Warner, he was of the color during IPL second edition. So how did you back him?
00:31 I didn't no one expected that he would be the man of the tournament.
00:34 You didn't expect that? I certainly did.
00:38 Without a word of a lie, I promise you I called Justin Lange a few months ago
00:43 And I said don't worry about Davey. He'll win. He'll be man of the tournament
00:47 I didn't I thought Adam Zampa should have been man of the tournament personally, but he's a great player
00:51 he's one of the all-time great batters and
00:54 He's a fighter. He's someone who when he's backs against the wall. That's when you get the very very best of David Warner. So
00:59 There was a special finish to the tournament for him the the last couple of knocks
01:05 I didn't a word on Mitchell Marsh you you guys moved him to number three spot
01:10 Obviously he comes from a sporting rich family and and you know
01:13 There has been some talks that he hasn't lived up to the expectations, but what a performer he has been for you guys in this
01:19 T20 World Cup, so what was the motive behind like, you know promoting him at the numbers three spot and demoting Steve Smith down the other end
01:27 And what a what a and who is the DJ for the night in the racing room Adam Zampa and Kane Richardson
01:32 They're the DJs for tonight Mitch Marsh's move to number three was was a really important one in the West Indies
01:37 We felt as though he's someone who can play
01:39 He obviously plays fastballing very well growing up at the WACA. He's
01:43 Very very dominant off the back foot. He's someone who
01:47 Loves the contest loves a challenge
01:49 And we just backed him from the start. We
01:52 We committed to him batting number three for a long time
01:56 He knew that and that was that's all you need
01:58 sometimes you need a little bit of backing you need some confidence from from everybody else and I
02:02 Think it was the first first ball. He faced in the practice game the first practice game against New Zealand. We hit for six also
02:09 That's it just shows the confidence that he has the confidence we have in each other
02:16 It was brilliant. I are and you're the first Australian man to win the the world t20. I'm how proud a moment is this for you?
02:22 Yeah, it's awesome. It really is. I think
02:24 There's been so much talk about
02:27 This being the one that's been elusive to Australia
02:30 And and to be fair, we've probably underperformed in the past if we're being honest with ourself. We've had some great teams along the way
02:36 This team's pretty special the the camaraderie the
02:42 The way that everyone really cares for each other and looks after each other
02:45 Looks out for each other is pretty special. So yeah, it's awesome. That's brilliant and it's great for for Australian cricket
02:53 And if you've been told a fortnight to go after the England game that you'd be here now
02:57 Winning captain would you believe them? Yeah. Yeah, I would have I think a
03:02 few things would have had to go on our way to do that, but honestly the
03:06 We had such a belief in our group that we could that we were good enough that that our team
03:12 and our squad and our extended squad were the right players and the
03:16 As good as anyone in the world
03:19 T20 career you need a bit of luck. Don't get me wrong
03:21 Yeah, of course, you need a bit of luck and like you said we won six six out of seven tosses
03:25 Which goes a long way?
03:27 But
03:29 But we played some really good cricket. We played we played cricket where we we put teams on the back foot because we were aggressive and
03:36 Yeah
03:38 Yes, that's nice and it's strange that Australia has won 550 over cups, but this is your first t20 title prior to the tournament
03:47 Did you sort of you know, I mean pinpoint a couple of areas where you would like to sort of?
03:51 Do well and address issues moving forward
03:53 Yeah, we knew that the the middle overs against against spin particularly leg spin
03:58 We understand that that it hasn't been our strength
04:01 if
04:01 If you look at all into the numbers
04:04 It shows that that leg spin hasn't been our main strength in in t20 cricket or one day create even test cricket. So
04:09 we were we're really
04:12 We're really committed to staying positive and aggressive
04:15 Against spin and and that showed tonight the way that Mitch and Davey played against against New Zealand
04:22 Shadab got four four in the semifinal, but we kept attacking and and we were so committed to that throughout the tournament
04:30 We were comfortable to be able to fail being aggressive because we know that that's when we play our best
04:36 I
04:37 Think would if you if you go home and you don't make the semis or you don't make the final you're kicking yourself
04:42 If you're an Australian team and you play in your shell
04:44 So that that was a real positive for us Aaron
04:48 Could you just sum up the last six weeks you've had with his side?
04:50 I think Stoney said that you almost sort of love each other. I mean how far do you think that's being affected in?
04:57 Taking to success here. It's unbelievable the the it's been brilliant
05:01 It honestly has the it's had ups and downs along the way. Don't get me wrong. It's it's
05:05 never smooth sailing there's
05:08 When you're in bio bubbles and things like that, it's always difficult
05:11 Guys can guys get along very well. We've played some golf together. We've hung out. We've been able to
05:18 Relax and just enjoy each other's company
05:22 But when you're in each other's company 24/7, of course, there's gonna be issues at times
05:26 but that's a part of that's a part of being in a team and
05:29 As you can hear in there now the the there's always music playing in the corridors of the hotel
05:35 There's everyone's doors are always open. It's it's been brilliant and just on March
05:39 I think two years ago. He said in a press conference that most of Australia hates me
05:44 I mean, I'm sure all of you love him
05:46 Could you just say a few words on him and how that feels tonight for him?
05:51 He's the nicest person you will ever meet in your life
05:53 He's he's obviously a special player to be able to put up with the critics for so long
05:58 When his performance haven't been bad at by any stretch of the imagination in any any format of the game
06:03 If you look at his ODI numbers, they're very good
06:05 For him to keep coming back and keep improving when when people keep doubting him shows how much of a quality person is
06:12 I don't the festive moment of your look
06:15 I mean you guys start in t20 as well now how confident you are to be continued in the next edition as well because
06:22 Next edition will be in Australia. Yes. It's that's quite a while away in terms of cricket cricket time
06:30 There's there's a lot of cricket to be played before then we're just gonna soak this up and really enjoy this one
06:35 My question is regarding which a major start, you know, it's off color. So how you back up him? He's a world-class baller, but
06:43 He's you know off-color. So what's true? Yeah, he's a world-class bowler and
06:49 came Williamson probably probably just got ahead of the game against him tonight in the
06:55 Them two overs towards the middle of the innings, but that's okay. He'll be he'll bounce back
06:59 He's he showed his how good he is in international cricket
07:03 Yeah, I think tonight you can't read too much into that. That's that's a team
07:10 New Zealand probably a little bit behind where they thought they they should have been after the first ten and they took a chance and
07:16 And got away with it. So he was yeah, Mitch is brilliant for us and great around the bowlers as well
07:22 So that can never be underestimated either how you see your individual performance
07:25 We see in the past that you were quite open about your performance beat in dressing room or you know
07:31 I just sing it publicly how you see your performance in the second part of the question is
07:34 Do you think that you know overall Australian players have played less amount of cricket in in last?
07:39 Twelve months or one and a half years. They're very fresh. They are injury-free
07:43 No bio bubble fatigues as compared to other teams. So you think that this this really helped you as a team to achieve this
07:50 Yeah, I think so guys different guys preparations were so guys preparations for this tournament were at different stages
07:56 Some were at IPL somewhere at their state preseason somewhere
08:01 Rehabbing and coming off injury. So yeah, I think that that played a part as well that to be to be mentally fresh towards the
08:08 back end of the tournament
08:10 Physically physically fresh as well
08:11 I think was a really important part and that's what my form was poor the last two games zero and five I think nine against
08:17 West Indies. Yeah, it's not ideal
08:19 But I've always said I'll take I'll take no runs in a win any day of the week
08:22 Do you have any particular message for the fans and the media persons were supported you throughout in this journey?
08:30 Yeah, of course, obviously, we're very very thankful of of the Australian public and the cricket public who have supported us right throughout
08:36 It's it's been special to to feel the love feel the support from home, especially
08:42 I know that the time zones haven't been ideal to be watching
08:45 Watching the games. I think they've been starting at 1 a.m. Especially the finals
08:49 But the amount of people that have been getting up turning on their alarms and supporting us
08:54 Has been unbelievable and we're very very grateful for that
08:58 Mitch Marsh was a man of the match but Josh Hazlewood played a huge role in the first innings
09:02 I mean he in fact is the only player to play both the IPL and World Cup finals this year
09:06 I know some of the players pulled out of the IPL
09:08 But did Josh give you guys any sort of tip on playing in the UAE after having all those difficult overs for CSK?
09:15 Yeah, he was he was really important with our bowling group. He he shared his experience of CSK to be able to
09:22 To be able to share his his
09:25 Experience of at CSK. I think was really important to the length to bowl particularly at the end of the tournament where
09:32 the wicket start to get a little bit more worn and and
09:35 Hard length which is Josh's specialty. I guess is was tough to hit. So
09:40 yeah, that that was really important that he passed on that information and
09:44 Honestly the his performances in the IPL probably forced his way into the into the starting 11 over Kane Richardson
09:51 who's a wonderful t20 bowler and someone who
09:55 Who's been so important for us?
09:57 But yeah, it was it was a tough call just one on JL
10:00 Obviously was only a couple of months ago those plenty being said about him and where he's at
10:05 What do you think this means of him to him and secondly did did you notice any changes in him in this tournament that?
10:10 Potentially helped you guys get to this point as well. Yeah, he's been great
10:13 The vibe around the group has been unbelievable to just how well everyone's getting along
10:17 There's like I said earlier
10:19 There's a lot of a lot of time spent in each other's rooms and the team room and just chilling out
10:25 Lunches and dinners and breakfast everything is had all together. So I think that that just adds to the to the environment
10:31 So yeah, JL's played a part in that as well. And it's it's yeah great reward for him as well as the players
10:36 I think I'm right in saying you're on the same flight as the England players tomorrow
10:40 and you tell me what you think the mood might be like the contrasting moods might be like on that flight and how
10:46 Australian cricket might be buoyed into what's coming up over the next few weeks, please
10:50 Yeah, I'm not on that flight. So I don't know how it's gonna go
10:54 I'm flying home to Melbourne, which is which is nice to know quarantine and being with my family, which is which is all good
11:01 so I think it
11:03 The fact that we had so much support from back home
11:07 even through some times when we weren't playing our best cricket and
11:12 There was some some inconsistent performances
11:14 I think that that shows how committed we are to to playing cricket for Australia and how much we love it
11:20 Hey Finchie, obviously you would have been really happy with our Mitch Marsh went in those West Indies and Bangladesh tours
11:26 But Steve Smith had a pretty good record at three coming into the into the series as well
11:31 How big a decision I guess was that you know to devote him in a sense and how close were you to?
11:37 Maybe moving Mitch down the order and keeping Smith at three. No, not at all to be honest
11:41 It was something we chatted about
11:43 before the West Indies and then after it probably just reassured us and then
11:47 Smithy was was so open to it. Obviously, he'll do anything that the team needs. So
11:53 The way that we wanted to structure up was obviously be a little bit more aggressive in the power play
11:58 We saw how important that was for both either bat or ball. So
12:00 and smudges ability to play spin through the middle had added that extra layer of
12:07 Confidence in our group with Storness and Maddy Wade behind him as well
12:10 So that was that was the way that we try to structure that up. So that's all it was it was
12:15 Yeah turned out to be a nice move
12:19 Hi, I'm just on Mitch again. You obviously left him out against England
12:23 Could you talk about how he responded to that decision on the night and then his performances in the next four games?
12:28 Yeah, he bounced back beautifully
12:30 It was obviously disappointed everyone is when they get dropped
12:33 I don't know anyone who's who's over the moon when they get dropped. So
12:37 Yeah, he's disappointed, but he knew that it wasn't a performance thing
12:41 It was it was only a structural change of the team when we went with a different makeup
12:45 So that's all that was so but but the way that he's bounced back has been unbelievable
12:50 Hi, Aaron. My question is this current Australian team has five test specialists
12:55 often we hear about a team of t20 specialist and you one with three fast bowlers were test regulars and
13:02 Warren Smith who are also test regulars. So do you think it's a kind of a myth that
13:07 A t20 team needs only a t20 specialist per se. Well, there's a common there's a argument for all of it
13:15 Whichever way you want to structure up. We're lucky that five of our guys are
13:20 Brilliant test players and have been for a long time. So but they've all proven themselves in t20 cricket as well
13:26 So I don't think you can read too much into to however you go about that
13:30 I think it's it's important that you're picking guys for specific roles and they execute what you think that what was a turning point of
13:38 Today's game and how much does it benefit you in this matter today?
13:41 Ah the turning I thought the way that we bowled with the new ball in that power play was obviously really important
13:47 That first 10 overs to restrict New Zealand if I think 57
13:50 But we knew that one down there was
13:53 It was always going to be tough because the Jews started to come down quite heavy
13:57 which we hadn't seen at all in the tournament so far, but I
14:00 Think the turning point was when I got out
14:04 To be able for Mitch Marsh to be able to come in and and play the way that he did is it was outstanding
14:08 That partnership with Davey was was brilliant the way that they put the pressure back on the opposition
14:13 It was exactly what was needed at the time
14:15 You
14:17 [BLANK_AUDIO]
