00:00 Insurgent group of Niger has declared the prosecution of deposed president Mohammed
00:07 Bazoum for high treason and undermining state security.
00:12 The announcement came hours after they communicated that they were open to dialogue with West
00:16 African nations to settle the ascending regional crisis.
00:20 The soldiers who took power last month are facing international pressure to release and
00:24 reinstate the democratically elected leader.
00:26 Colonel Major Amadou Abramane, their spokesman, claimed on state television on Sunday night
00:31 that the military regime had gathered the necessary evidence to prosecute before competent
00:36 national and international authorities, the ousted president and his local and foreign
00:40 accomplices for high treason and for undermining the internal and external security of Niger.
00:46 He also dismissed concerns over Bazoum's health, saying that the deposed leader had seen his
00:50 doctor the previous day.
00:52 After this visit, the doctor raised no problems regarding the state of health of the deposed
00:55 president and members of his family, he said.
00:58 Bazoum 63 and his family have been held at the president's official residence in Niamey
01:03 since the coup on July 26, with international concern mounting over their conditions in detention.
01:09 Those close to the president and his ruling party complain of paucity of food, electricity
01:13 and water.
01:14 However, the junta dismissed all reports on state television while it accused West African
01:19 politicians and international partners of promulgating disinformation to discredit and
01:23 vilify the junta.
01:24 The economic community of West African state's IKOWAS has called for Bazoum's reinstatement,
01:29 imposing severe economic sanctions on Niger and threatening military intervention if civilian
01:34 rule is not restored.
01:35 Still, the West African bloc, which has approved the deployment of a standby force to restore
01:40 constitutional order in Niger, has said it remains committed to finding a diplomatic
01:44 solution to the crisis.
01:47 The coup in Niger is seen as a major blow to many Western nations, which viewed Niamey
01:50 as a partner in the Sahel region that they could work with to beat back a growing uprising
01:56 by groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIL.
01:59 The United States and France have more than 2,500 military personnel in the region and
02:03 with other European countries have invested hundreds of millions of dollars in military
02:07 assistance and training of Niger's forces.
