00:00 She really just wanted to hide.
00:02 She would cower under the dog bed.
00:06 She couldn't relax.
00:13 She would watch every movement we made
00:16 with this look of fear and anxiety.
00:19 This is Chips Ahoy.
00:21 She's my foster dog.
00:25 I'm bribing her with peanut butter.
00:27 Hey, Chips.
00:30 (gentle music)
00:32 Are we friends?
00:36 No, we're not.
00:37 We're not friends.
00:38 Wouldn't eat anything.
00:40 Wouldn't let us come near her without recoiling
00:43 or trying to find another place to hide.
00:46 She was just too scared to engage at all.
00:49 I think Chips was really scared
00:51 because of how much kept changing around her
00:53 all of the time.
00:54 I put some peanut butter in a toy
00:57 to see if she would like it.
01:00 (gentle music)
01:01 She loves it.
01:02 She loves it.
01:06 Oh, I scared her.
01:09 We're good.
01:13 She loves it.
01:15 Oh.
01:16 We wanted so badly to love her,
01:18 but understood this was going to take time
01:20 in order for her to trust us.
01:22 (Chips barks)
01:28 Do you like it?
01:29 My husband, Brendan, would just sit with her
01:34 and pet her for 20, 30, sometimes 40 minutes.
01:38 Slowly, she saw Brendan as her protector.
01:45 She would sit at his feet for hours
01:47 while he worked from home.
01:49 And whenever Brendan got up,
01:50 she went right there with him.
01:52 She became attached to Brendan.
01:54 If he went to the bathroom, so did she.
01:57 She had overcome her initial challenges,
01:59 so our work was done.
02:01 It was time for her to go to her forever home
02:03 and start the next chapter of her life.
02:06 We were so excited when we found out
02:08 that someone wanted to adopt her.
02:10 It was heart-wrenching to say goodbye,
02:13 but we were so excited to see her
02:14 get the best possible life.
02:16 Unfortunately, only two days later, she was returned.
02:20 She was quote unquote, "too much work."
02:24 She wasn't too much work at all.
02:26 She really just needed time.
02:28 Oh yeah, you like that peanut butter?
02:31 He has it under your nose!
02:33 She still wasn't playing with toys, but she was relaxing.
02:36 She was able to close her eyes and sleep during the day.
02:41 We also discovered that she loved other dogs.
02:45 She finally began to trust me like she trusted Brendan.
02:51 She loves to steal the socks right off my feet.
02:55 I've gone through so many pairs of socks already,
02:57 but I don't care.
02:57 She can have all the socks in the world that she wants.
03:00 You sitting on my sock?
03:03 There is a completely different energy
03:06 and pet in Chips Ahoy now.
03:09 She is no longer a shy, timid, scared dog,
03:14 and that's so great to see.
03:15 Yeah, there's my girl.
03:20 There's my girl.
03:21 I love your big jump on the couch.
03:23 We said to ourselves that we can't give
03:27 Chips Ahoy to another home.
03:29 Chips Ahoy is ours.
03:31 This is our dog, and we want to adopt her,
03:33 and we want to give her our home.
03:35 I'm just so excited that Chips Ahoy is in our life
03:38 and is a part of our family.
03:40 I've never been prouder to be a failure,
03:44 to be a foster failure.
03:45 So being a failure is the best, in my opinion.
03:49 Give me a big fat F, I'll fail any day
03:52 if it means I get Chips Ahoy.
03:53 Look at that tail going.
03:56 Oh yeah, there you go.
03:58 (laughing)
