Garrett Nussmeier: Fall Camp 2023
Transcript
00:00 It's a challenge, not a lot of people in the country are getting to have to deal
00:03 with this.
00:04 And so guys are tired and it makes us come together as a unit,
00:07 makes us push, makes us fight.
00:08 I think it's instilling a lot of toughness in our team.
00:11 And I think that's gonna pay off big time during the season.
00:14 >> So what are you doing to deal with that heat?
00:16 >> I mean, shoot, we got guys cramping, but we have a great nutrition staff.
00:22 So that makes things a lot easier.
00:24 They take good care of us and make sure we put in the right stuff in our bodies.
00:27 And so I think that helps a lot, but just pushing through it, fighting through it.
00:33 >> You obviously had such a good end to your last year playing that Georgia game
00:35 and in that bowl game.
00:38 I don't know if we've talked to you since then.
00:39 You seem like you maybe would have an opportunity to go elsewhere with the way
00:41 the transfer rolls.
00:42 What brought you back?
00:43 >> Man, yeah, no, we haven't talked about this.
00:47 I've been waiting for this.
00:50 I think for me, the biggest thing was, like I've said before,
00:55 it matters to me to wear this state on my jersey and to have LSU on my helmet.
01:01 It means something to me.
01:02 I think it means something to a lot of guys on our team.
01:04 But I was born in Lake Charles, all my family's in Lake Charles, that's my home.
01:08 And being a kid who moved around so much,
01:10 Louisiana was the only constant place in my life.
01:12 And every time I would cross from this state, it felt like home.
01:15 So the reason I came here is because I wanted to play for
01:19 LSU, for the state of Louisiana.
01:20 And that's why I came back.
01:22 I think, like you said, I could have gone elsewhere and done different things.
01:27 But I think it matters to me more to finish what I started and
01:31 to be where I want to be and be where I'm wanted.
01:35 And I think that played a big part into it, is just playing for LSU,
01:39 playing for these fans, my teammates,
01:43 the coaches that I've learned to grow relationships with.
01:45 And I think that's why I stayed.
01:47 >> How have they made you feel invested or that you're a big part of things?
01:51 I imagine that's part of it.
01:53 >> Yeah, I mean, just being a part of it every day.
01:56 Like I said before, I'll do what I'm told.
02:00 I play my role, whatever it is.
02:01 If they tell me to go in, I'm ready to go in.
02:03 If they tell me to compete, I'm ready to compete.
02:06 And so I think that's kinda how that works.
02:12 But I can't go too much into that.
02:14 But yeah, so.
02:16 >> Was there ever serious consideration of entering the portal?
02:19 Or is that always just gonna be here?
02:20 >> I mean, I think anybody in my situation, there's opportunities and
02:27 you look at things and you have to listen.
02:29 But I never entered the portal, so I wasn't talking to people.
02:33 I wasn't really thinking about that.
02:35 I wanted to focus on the situation that I'm in,
02:39 focus on making things right here at LSU.
02:41 And so I think that was the biggest thing for me.
02:45 Like I said, I felt wanted.
02:47 I felt like this is where I should be.
02:48 This is where I've always wanted to be.
02:50 and wanted to finish where I started.
