00:02 >> Bangers only.
00:03 >> Good beats, good beats, good vibes.
00:05 Great weather, can't get tired, boring stuff.
00:07 >> [LAUGH]
00:08 >> [SOUND]
00:14 >> Kim, when you get out here and
00:16 get a chance to just be kind of cooped up with the team for a couple days,
00:21 is this an opportunity for you guys to build?
00:24 >> A luxurious hotel that we're at?
00:26 No, it's not cooped up.
00:27 Take us back to the airport Hilton in 2011, we'll talk about it.
00:30 >> [LAUGH]
00:32 >> All right, let's forget about it.
00:35 >> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:36 >> But is this an opportunity for you guys to build?
00:37 >> The team bonding situation over here in California,
00:40 where it was what, like 67 degrees when I first woke up?
00:44 I was still on New Orleans time, it was like 5 o'clock in the morning.
00:46 >> Yeah, went for a run, it was great.
00:47 >> Yeah, I woke up at 3.30 this morning.
00:49 I was like, my body thinks it's 5.30, go back to sleep, please.
00:54 Rewoke back up with a purpose.
00:56 We're out here, we're trying to get better.
00:58 And you sort of love the idea that you can come out here and
01:02 literally have the most perfect weather type of day ever.
01:06 Light breeze, 77, 80 degrees out.
01:09 We're talking about it's hot, you're laughing because they have no idea.
01:13 That's competitive edge.
01:16 We started off with pods, which were good for us.
01:19 Anytime you can compete against another NFL team,
01:23 it's great for competition.
01:26 >> I did notice that a lot of them had their jerseys rolled up.
01:28 So the Chargers experienced today as a hot day, you would say.
01:33 >> Is that what that was?
01:35 Look, whatever they experienced, we would take this 20 days out of 20 days in
01:39 New Orleans.
01:40 In fact, I might throw on a sweater tomorrow.
01:43 >> But they did say it was hot?
01:45 >> That's what they said.
01:46 >> [LAUGH] >> I don't know exactly who day is, but
01:49 they said it was hot.
01:50 Like this is one of our hot ones, really.
01:52 >> [LAUGH] >> Can you get, like personally,
01:55 can you get work done in a different way when it's-
01:58 >> Absolutely, when you're going up
02:00 against a guy like Justin Herbert,
02:02 who is as accomplished as he has in his young career, you can get work done.
02:07 I love the idea that we're doing these two minute drills,
02:09 we're doing our team drills, and he's quicken out.
02:12 It teaches you patience.
02:14 It reteaches you that you have to drive home to the quarterback and
02:17 sometimes you're not gonna get there but continue your rushes.
02:20 You can definitely focus on the important things.
02:22 I think they've got a good running back in Austin Eckler and
02:26 what he's able to do.
02:27 So in terms of team reps,
02:29 you can hone in on exactly what you wanna do to get better that day.
02:32 We talked about today, one on ones, whatever that is.
02:36 You guys will make fanfare out of it.
02:38 I could care less.
02:38 I'm just trying to make sure that my next rep is better than my last rep.
02:42 >> Cam, along those lines, how would you assess how the defense did as a whole?
02:46 >> Red zone, I think there was a clear showing out right there.
02:50 In terms of two minute, you can't let them mosey on down the way they did.
02:54 A lot of quicks, a lot of whatever's.
02:56 But at the end of the day, if we wanna be our top tier defense,
02:58 we have to be having an answer for every type of offense that we see.
03:01 Ben don't break.
03:03 You saw technically, I guess you say we won the two minute, or
03:06 maybe they won the two minute, however you wanna look at it.
03:09 I think that after we break down the film, we'll get better from it.
03:11 That's key.
03:12 I'm not so worried.
03:15 Younger me would say, we wanna win each and every rep.
03:18 And of course you do.
03:19 But you also wanna be able to learn from it.
03:21 So let's break down the film and get better.
03:23 Love that it's preseason week two instead of week one talking about this.
03:28 >> What's the value to it just from breaking the routine and
03:30 coming out here and doing something different?
03:32 >> Yeah, when you think about flying in last night, getting in at 730,
03:38 having to adjust your clocks, your schedules, come out to a practice like this.
03:43 Where again, it's not like you're gonna get tired physically, but
03:46 mentally you're gonna see something new.
03:48 It's exhilarating, in fact, getting able to talk to Khalil Mack, Joey Boza.
03:54 You can run some ideas off of him, pop them off real quick.
03:57 That's the fun part.
03:59 What did you see, what did you see, and how do you get better?
04:01 >> Malcolm Roach had a bunch of standout plays today.
04:05 >> When doesn't he?
04:06 >> Is he having as good of a camp as it looks like it?
04:08 >> Yeah, I mean, I think he's refreshed.
04:10 Obviously, Malcolm Roach is what, his fourth year in our system?
04:17 And he has found his niche, if you will, and knows how to make these big plays.
04:22 And mentally speaking, again, he's at a refresh point, it seems like.
04:26 He looks like he's reinvigorated with the game.
04:28 >> Do you feel really good about all the young guys across the line that
04:32 are kinda stepping into either their newcomers or they're stepping into new roles?
04:36 Across the board, it seems like it's been a promising month for Karl and Peyton.
04:42 >> Yeah, absolutely.
04:43 I mean, new guys in terms of Shep, in terms of Colin Sanders,
04:49 you bring in Roach, the way he's playing.
04:53 Even our draftees, BB, Brian Brizzee, I think that's a lot of potential.
05:01 There's a great thing about young guys is they have tons of potential, and
05:05 you're trying to realize and capture that as fast as you can.
05:08 And the faster we can do that and
05:09 roll into week one with some added experience, that's what we're doing.
05:13 We're building experience, and hopefully that experience is gonna be phenomenal.
05:16 >> You guys are able to get some more interior push.
05:19 How much does that help you on the edges?
05:22 >> Yeah, that would be a game changer, right?
05:24 If we, Dream World, you have 4D linemen rushing every third down.
05:30 That would never happen.
05:31 But Dream World, when you have those two big hogs pushing three,
05:35 four yards up and the quarterback can't escape through the A's and B's,
05:38 it gets fun on the outside.
05:40 You know, Dream World, if you have four down D linemen every third down,
05:47 maybe they can't double the ends.
05:50 Again, Dream World.
05:51 >> Look, hey man, it was in the 60s when you woke up this morning.
05:54 >> I mean, that's what, in terms of the decades, or
05:57 are we talking about the weather?
05:59 Yeah, the weather was sort of chilly.
06:01 I put a sweater back on.
06:03 I walked down, I was like, this is, no, no sweater, yeah.
06:07 >> Eric McCoy has talked about how quick Nathan Shepard and
06:10 Colin Saunders are.
06:11 Is that how you're seeing it as well?
06:13 What is it like with those two on the inside being as fast as they are off
06:16 the line?
06:16 >> Yeah, I love how Colin Saunders has surprising wiggle.
06:22 You know?
06:23 I mean, you see an explosive nose like that and he loves to play the run.
06:30 You love somebody who knows their role and wants to excel at it.
06:33 But at the same time, if you give him a chance, like say,
06:35 he'll give you some wiggle, he got some moves.
06:37 He got some things that, that root hog mentality that you sort of love.
06:41 And then of course, you talk about Shep and
06:44 Brzee, they like to stretch that three, and I can work with that.
06:48 I mean, if they give me what they've been giving me,
06:51 I can definitely play off and work off that and it'll be great in the long run.
06:55 >> Surprising wiggle, is that a reference to the worm the other day?
06:57 >> Man, you seen that?
06:58 >> [LAUGH] >> I mean, again, surprising wiggles.
07:01 >> [LAUGH] >> What do you think about his
07:03 personality, though?
07:03 Like not only as a energetic fun guy, but also-
07:07 >> Right, reminisce.
07:07 >> Willing to take on a leadership role, it feels like, with a new team.
07:09 >> Reminisce of John Jenks in terms of personality wise, and
07:12 then he has not even a subtle leadership personality.
07:17 Like he's willing to lead the charge.
07:18 Somebody you can go to war with.
07:21 >> Yeah. >> And you love that off rip.
07:22 I like that, when these live bullets get going, you need to know who you can trust,
07:26 who you can walk into a bar with and come out on the other side.
07:28 >> [LAUGH] >> And B.B., did he earn a new nickname?
07:32 >> He came in- >> He was B.C. before.
07:34 >> Yeah, I mean, if you talk to my D-line coach, he was Breece, and
07:36 that messed me up mentally, so.
07:38 >> But B.B. is- >> B.B.
07:40 may be where I'm headed towards.
07:41 As of last week, I don't know if he looks like a Brian to me.
07:45 >> Does that mean he's earning something with this play?
07:47 >> Not at all. >> No?
07:48 >> No, not at all.
07:49 That was easier for me than him earning something.
07:52 No, no, he's gonna have to work his derriere off to earn it.
07:55 >> We got time for one more.
07:56 >> A little bit of an under discussed impact on the defensive line.
07:59 >> Wait, one more after him, or one more because of him?
08:01 >> One more after Raw.
08:02 There we go.
08:02 I just want a clarity.
08:04 >> I was a couple of batted passes at the line today.
08:06 It's something that's always been a specialty of yours.
08:08 Do you feel like it's yet another way away from sacks to get into the mind of
08:12 a quarterback?
08:12 >> Absolutely, again, when you saw the team reps, when you saw whatever the
08:15 situations were, there was a lot of quicks, and how do you get those quicks down?
08:20 Hands up.
08:21 I think that that's a great response, and it'll force them into some unfavorable
08:25 situations, or favorable for our defense anyways.
08:28 And that's when you can really get that pass rush on.
08:31 >> Does quarterback height kind of impact that at all, or is it about-
08:34 >> Depends on the quarterback, yeah.
08:35 It would be more along the lines of whether he's a high release guy or
08:39 low release guy.
08:40 It varies on quarterback.
08:44 You assume shorter quarterbacks, they have low balls, but
08:48 sometimes that's not the case.
08:49 They have a high release point because they have to get that loftiness in there.
