00:00 As much as video games are often best enjoyed while stopping to smell the roses at every
00:04 possible opportunity, there's nothing quite like witnessing an expert player bend the
00:08 game over their knee and break it down to its most basic components.
00:12 The speedrunning community has grown massively in recent years, thanks to sites like Twitch
00:16 allowing skilled players to broadcast their brain-breakingly impressive speedruns live
00:21 to their followers.
00:22 And that's what we're covering today, games that only have just come out, have just hit
00:26 the shelves, and have already been beaten in embarrassingly quick fashion.
00:30 So let's take a look at them as I'm Jules, this is WhatCulture.com, and these are 10
00:33 Recent Video Games That Got Beat In Record Time.
00:36 10.
00:37 Halo Infinite - 26 Minutes
00:39 Though the critical path through Halo Infinite's campaign isn't that long, clocking in at around
00:44 10 to 12 hours, speedrunners have had an absolute field day using every dirty trick possible
00:49 to boil a playthrough down to less than 30 minutes.
00:53 At present, the world record on easy difficulty is a ludicrous 25 minutes, 45 seconds, held
00:59 by the runner Bareface, who also holds the world record for a legendary difficulty run
01:03 of 28 minutes, 59 seconds.
01:06 Pulling off a tight speedrun is heavily reliant on the player's expertise in using Master
01:10 Chief's much-loved new grapple shot, a grappling hook that allows players to propel themselves
01:14 across the game's environment at great speed.
01:17 Even so, knowing how to make the absolute most of the grapple shot is what truly separates
01:21 the skilled from the absolutely gifted.
01:24 Bareface's run, which is apparently the product of over 700 hours of work, is nothing short
01:29 of mesmerizing, even as he insists there's still more time to be saved here.
01:33 Also, be sure to check out IGN's hilarious video where they got some of Halo Infinite's
01:37 developers to react to the previous record holder's speedrun.
01:40 They are gobsmacked.
01:41 9.
01:42 Resident Evil Village - 1 Hour, 22 Minutes
01:46 Speedrunner SpicyTV currently holds the world record among Resident Evil Village's spirited
01:51 and highly competitive speedrunning community, having beaten the game in a truly impressive
01:56 1 hour, 22 minutes, and 33 seconds on casual difficulty in New Game+.
02:01 It is a run that demonstrates absolute mastery of the various gameplay systems, conserving
02:06 ammo and resources for the most necessary parts, skipping every possible skippable enemy,
02:10 leaping off ladders to save precious seconds, and having the various puzzles memorized beforehand.
02:15 Given that most players average on around 9-10 hours on a first playthrough, it is a
02:19 jaw-dropping performance.
02:21 Although with many other speedrunners currently clipping at their heels, it's just a matter
02:24 of time before he or somebody else posts a new world record.
02:28 8.
02:29 Elden Ring - 18 Minutes
02:31 Elden Ring may be the newest game on this list, but FromSoftware fans, being the dedicated
02:36 bunch that they are, of course wasted no time at all in mercilessly taking the lush action
02:41 RPG apart.
02:42 Though a typical critical path playthrough will take most players somewhere between 30-50
02:46 hours, tirelessly committed players have already managed to conquer the game in less than 20
02:51 minutes.
02:52 The current world record, which could change any day now admittedly, is held by Distortion2,
02:56 who raced through the game in just 17 minutes and 43 seconds.
03:00 Unsurprisingly, the fastest Elden Ring speedruns are generally achieved through exploits, namely
03:04 a wrong warp where the spawn point can be manipulated to warp players much further than
03:08 the game intends, which allows them to potentially skip huge parts of the campaign.
03:12 Distortion2, however, used a specific and difficult to execute glitch called "The Zip",
03:17 allowing him to skip massive portions of the game and take pole position in the speedrunning
03:21 standings.
03:22 Though FromSoftware has since glitched the zip out of the game, PC players have simply
03:26 reverted to the previous patch in order to continue refining their runs while still benefiting
03:30 from the zip.
03:31 Glorious stuff indeed.
03:33 7.
03:34 It Takes Two - 1 Hour 30 Minutes
03:36 2021's consensus Game of the Year winner is an especially interesting game to speedrun,
03:41 because per its title, it's a co-op-only game which requires the involvement of another
03:45 player at all times.
03:47 Given that record-breaking speedruns require perfect split-second timing from a well-trained
03:51 individual, sharing that responsibility across two people obviously has huge potential for
03:56 failure.
03:57 And yet, the It Takes Two speedrunning community has been surprisingly lively regardless, with
04:02 the current world record going to G-Lint and GoodNoise, who managed to beat the game in
04:06 just 1 hour, 29 minutes, and 35 seconds.
04:09 Considering that many were surprised by the game's surprisingly beefy playtime upon release,
04:13 which is about 10-12 hours, reducing it by a factor of 10 in tandem with another player
04:18 is not to be sniffed at.
04:19 Speedrunners had struggled to crack a time below 90 minutes for an entire year after
04:23 the game's release, and while G-Lint insists that there remain many areas for improvement,
04:27 it's still a mighty achievement.
04:28 Watching the pair use out-of-bounds tricks to skip through portions of levels and expertly
04:32 coordinate their timings is nothing short of incredible.
04:35 6.
04:36 Deathloop - 16 Minutes
04:38 Though Deathloop's campaign length varies pretty wildly depending on the player, getting
04:42 to the end of the critical path should take around 15 hours on average.
04:46 Or if you're speedrunner Seeker, you know that it takes about the same time as it does
04:49 to have a shower.
04:50 Earlier this year, Seeker shattered the existing world record by plowing through the game in
04:55 just 15 minutes and 45 seconds, using every glitch in the book to shave precious minutes
05:00 and seconds off their time.
05:01 This included exploits such as leaning through locked doors to bypass them and using laser
05:05 mines to propel themselves to supposedly inaccessible areas.
05:09 As with Halo Infinite, IGN caught up with Deathloop's developers and had them react
05:13 to a previous world record holding 20 minutes speedrun of the game, where they can scarcely
05:17 believe what they're seeing.
05:18 5.
05:19 Metroid Dread - 1 Hour and 12 Minutes
05:22 Metroid Dread was one of last year's most acclaimed games, and despite its fair level
05:26 of challenge, took most players around 8 hours to beat.
05:29 Speedrunners, however, have managed to whittle that time down to barely an hour.
05:32 Though technically the world record to date is Marouf's run of just 1 hour 7 minutes,
05:37 Marouf used glitches which were patched out of the game within weeks of its release.
05:40 Without the Switch allowing players to downgrade their games, it effectively meant that no
05:44 future speedrunners could replicate their run without using a hacked Switch, so the
05:48 run is now part of the legacy wing of Metroid Dread speedruns.
05:51 The real world record then goes to speedrunner Bane, who demolished the game in just 1 hour
05:56 12 minutes with a level of practice deficiency sure to make regular Dread players feel wholly
06:01 inadequate.
06:02 Thanks.
06:03 4.
06:04 Hitman 3 - 5 Minutes
06:06 Though the sandbox-style gameplay of the Hitman games encouraged players to take their time
06:10 and experiment with teeing up their target's creative depth, it's also a fascinating thing
06:14 to watch the intricate levels be thoroughly dismantled by speedrunners.
06:18 Hitman 3, while typically taking around 8 hours for the average playthrough, has been
06:21 beaten in less than 5 minutes by Tupla Pecone.
06:25 This brain-exploding speedrun races through the opening Dubai mission in just 8 seconds,
06:30 and excluding loading menu screens and cutscenes, wraps the whole game up in a mere 4 minutes
06:35 and 55 seconds.
06:36 Throughout the video, it's clear that they have memorised the precise placement of every
06:40 single target and NPC patrol path, allowing them to barrel their way through each stage
06:44 in literal record time.
06:46 3.
06:47 Death's Door - 45 Minutes
06:49 The highly challenging action-adventure game Death's Door takes players around 9-10 hours
06:53 to beat on average, but speedrunners have already gotten this down to a mere three quarters
06:57 of an hour.
06:58 The current record holder is Weejo N.2, catchy name there, who managed to complete a glitched
07:03 true-ending run of the game's original 1.0 release in just 45 minutes and 9 seconds.
07:08 They took advantage of every sneaky trick at their disposal, while also demonstrating
07:12 a phenomenal knowledge of the game's movement and combat mechanics.
07:16 Considering Weejo has shaved off more than 20 minutes of his time within the last two
07:19 months, don't be shocked if he takes this much further before this year ends.
07:23 2.
07:24 Returnal - 3 Minutes and 55 Seconds
07:26 Returnal's brutally difficult main story can take players well upwards of 20 hours, but
07:31 as of February this year, the world record is less than four damn minutes.
07:35 To be clear, Returnal's speedruns are divided into two main categories.
07:39 Fresh File are runs completed entirely from scratch, and New Game + ones, which begin
07:43 after the player has completed the game and has been thrown back out into the world.
07:47 In a regular playthrough, beating the last boss will take you back to the fourth biome,
07:51 and this is where New Game + runners begin their run.
07:54 New Game + runners have a major advantage given that their weapons and gear will also
07:58 carry over, but even so, beasting through it in barely the time it takes to make a cup
08:02 of coffee is absolutely, gloriously absurd.
08:05 Runner CaveCaveCave got through the game in just 3 minutes and 55 seconds, and they move
08:10 so quickly that it looks as though there's times where even the PS5's beefy SSD can
08:15 barely keep up with the speed at which Cave propels themselves through the game's procedurally
08:19 generated areas.
08:20 And if you think that a New Game + run is just a little too easy, CaveCaveCave also
08:25 holds the world record for a Fresh File run where they beat it in a stonking 42 minutes
08:29 and 38 seconds.
08:31 It is madness.
08:32 1.
08:33 Sifu - 17 Minutes
08:35 Much like Returnal, Sifu's runs are divided into the Fresh File and New Game + categories.
08:40 Though beyond allowing you to keep your permanently unlocked skills, a repeat playthrough still
08:44 requires a supernatural level of skill and concentration to power through.
08:48 The current New Game + world record is held by Cranky12, who completes Sifu in just 17
08:53 minutes and 23 seconds, a run which he claims is far from perfect as he lost precious seconds
08:58 on the second phase of the final boss, Yang.
09:00 Cranky also holds the world record for a Fresh File run at 40 minutes and 34 seconds, and
09:05 so whichever run you prefer, he's clearly developed an absurd command of the game's
09:09 combat mechanics alongside a near impossible degree of situational awareness.
09:13 Basically, in short, incredible isn't even the word to describe it.
09:17 And there we go my friends, those were 10 recent video games that got beaten in record
09:20 time.
09:21 I hope you enjoyed that, and please let me know what you thought about it down in the
09:23 comment section below.
09:25 As always I've been Jules, you can go follow me over on Twitter @RetroJWithA0, or you can
09:29 swing by Live and Let's Dice where I do all of my streaming outside of work, and it'd
09:33 be great to see you over there my friends.
09:34 But before I go, I just wanna say one thing, even though you're probably gonna speed
09:37 off and complete a brand new game in under, I don't know, like 2 minutes, let's just
09:41 make sure that we're taking care of ourselves in the right way by taking time out of our
09:44 busy days just to check in with ourselves mentally, alright?
09:48 You deserve love, happiness and success, and don't let anything or anyone else tell you
09:51 otherwise alright?
09:52 And if things feel like they're getting a bit too much, if you can, take a step away
09:55 from them, gain some perspective, speak to people about your problems, and then approach
09:59 them with new energy and fresh eyes.
10:01 Because trust me, staring at a problem over and over again doesn't make it any easier,
10:05 sometimes you do need to take a break, and that is more than okay.
10:08 As always I've been Jules, you have been awesome, never forget that, and I'll speak
10:12 to you soon.
