YEP rugby league writer Peter Smith reflects on Leeds Rhinos' crucial 24-22 win over Warrington Wolves.
Transcript
00:00 Well, the triple header here at Headingley has finished with Leeds Rhinos winning two
00:05 of their three games against Warrington Wolves. The women and the men's Super League teams
00:11 both picked up a victory in contrasting style. The women scored more than half a century
00:15 of points, the men won 24-22. The reserves beaten by two points to Warrington's reserves.
00:22 In that game there was some good news for Leeds, the return of Morgan Gannon who came
00:27 on in the second half as a substitute and played at stand-off and scored a try and had
00:32 a good impact on the game. He looked pretty sharp, hadn't played since May. Same for Harry
00:37 Newman who came back in the first team game for his first appearance since May. He looked
00:42 a bit rusty but he'll be better for having about 50 minutes in his legs. A good game,
00:49 exciting game. Leeds were behind a number of times, trailed at half-time but managed
00:56 to turn it around. I thought they showed good resolve to win the game in the final few minutes.
01:04 They scored a couple of late tries and then survived a scare on the final play when Matt
01:09 Dufty couldn't take a kick through from Stefan Ranchford. That sort of thing hasn't really
01:13 gone Leeds' way so far this season. The bounce of the balls tended to go against them. It
01:17 went their way this time. Donny Walker dropped a pass when he had a walk into the line in
01:24 the first half for Warrington. So Leeds rode the look but I thought they showed good resolve.
01:29 The second half was much better than the first. Kevin Smith, an outstanding individual performance
01:36 from him. It was one of those games that could have gone either way but for Leeds it's the
01:40 first winner in four. It keeps them in the hunt for the top six. They're now actually
01:45 two points adrift of Warrington Wolves who are fifth. It'll send them into another Muslim
01:51 game at Huddersfield next week in Goodhart. Impressive performance, good tries from David
01:59 Fusitua and James Bentley. It was nice to see Luke Cooley play well at full-back and
02:06 score his first Super League try. Some good individual performances, team-wise a lot to
02:11 work on but the win was all-important in this one and Leeds managed to get that.
