00:00 Former US President Donald Trump, who is seeking his term, has once again raised the issue
00:08 of high tax by India on certain American products, in particular the iconic Harley Davidson motorcycles,
00:16 and has threatened to slap reciprocal tax if voted to power in the 2024 presidential
00:22 elections.
00:23 During his first term as the US President, Trump described India as a "tariff king"
00:30 and in May 2019 terminated India's preferential market access, generalized system of preferences
00:36 to the United States alleging India has not given the US equitable and reasonable access
00:42 to its markets.
00:44 In an interview with Fox Business News, Trump argued that the tax rates in India were quite
00:49 high and criticized it, talking about what he would do if he came to power, Trump said,
00:55 "The other thing I want to have is a matching tax, where if India charges us, India is very
01:01 big with tariffs.
01:03 I mean, I saw it with Harley Davidson.
01:06 I was saying, 'How do you do in a place like India?'
01:09 'Oh, no good, sir.
01:10 Why?'
01:11 They have 100% and 150% and 200% tariffs."
01:16 He noted that Indian motorbikes can be sold in the US without any taxes or tariffs, while
01:21 Harley Davidson motorcycles face high tariffs when exported to India.
01:25 The former US President also criticized Brazil for its high tariffs.
01:29 He mentioned a senator from Pennsylvania who opposed the idea of imposing tariffs on India
01:34 in response to its high tariffs on US products.
01:37 The former president questioned why the US could not charge any tariffs on Indian products
01:41 if they were charging the US such high rates.
01:44 "If India is charging us too, what I want to have is a, call it, retribution.
01:49 You could call it whatever you want.
01:50 If they are charging us, we charge them," Mr. Trump said in response to a question.
01:56 Trump is the leading candidate in the Republican presidential primaries despite facing multiple
02:01 court cases and indictments.
02:03 According to major national polls, he has garnered over half of the GOP votes.
02:07 Meanwhile, Donald Trump said on Sunday that he will skip this week's first Republican
02:12 presidential debate, arguing that Americans know him well and so there is no need for
02:18 a public showdown with his rivals for the White House.
02:21 In a message on his platform Truth Social, Trump touted what he called a "hugely successful
02:26 record" as president and what he described as his popularity among the American people.
02:31 "I will, therefore, not be doing the debates," he said.
02:35 The first debate in the race for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination is scheduled
02:40 for Wednesday in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
