00:02 - Hey everybody, it's Christian Pedersen
00:03 joined by Dan Dickow back
00:05 for another Gonzaga Nation podcast.
00:06 You've caught us on a mailbag edition.
00:08 That's where we ask you guys,
00:11 I ask Dan your questions.
00:14 That is technically according to like the way
00:15 the show was written, it's supposed to be for both of us.
00:17 But again, not a single question ever rolls in for me
00:20 'cause you guys wanna talk to Dan.
00:21 He's the legend, he's the best.
00:22 I love this guy.
00:23 Dan, first one we got coming up to us
00:26 was brought to our social team on Facebook
00:28 and shout out as always to our social team
00:30 for running all this.
00:31 You guys rock.
00:32 Kate and Perry, they wanna know
00:34 what the impact is of him leaving.
00:35 - Well, I think Gonzaga had hopes
00:39 that he would get healthy enough to play
00:41 and they gave him the space and the time
00:44 and all the resources with physical therapy
00:48 and rehab and everything to allow him
00:51 to make his own decision if he was going to be right
00:54 and able to play.
00:55 Obviously he's made that decision
00:56 where he doesn't feel it's a go
00:58 and he's gonna step away from the game
01:00 and just be a student.
01:00 And I love the fact that Gonzaga always respects that
01:05 and honors that scholarship
01:06 to allow those kids to stay in school.
01:10 But I don't think this is anything
01:11 that Gonzaga wasn't preparing for.
01:13 I think if you look at the track record of his history
01:17 and injuries from high school
01:18 to his first two years at Gonzaga,
01:20 they had to have known that, especially last year,
01:26 that something like this was possible.
01:28 And so I don't think it was any kind of surprise
01:30 to the staff.
01:32 I think it was more so if he does,
01:35 if he is able to get through the rehab
01:39 and get back to where he's playing
01:41 and be available for a few minutes here and there,
01:46 it was gonna be a big time bonus.
01:49 It was gonna be kind of icing on the cake
01:51 and it would add to their depth.
01:54 Like I said, I don't think they were planning
01:56 on him playing big minutes anyways.
01:58 - Next question coming at you.
02:00 We got, what's the latest on Coach Few and Team USA?
02:04 - They're 5-0 in all their exhibition games.
02:08 They've looked good at times
02:10 and then they had a scare from Germany.
02:12 They had to have Anthony Edwards
02:15 make some big plays down the stretch.
02:17 I'm becoming a big believer and a big fan of his game
02:20 over the last three weeks
02:22 watching some of these USA games.
02:25 But when you kind of follow the USA basketball,
02:28 watch some clips and watch some stretches of the games
02:31 and you see some social media,
02:33 Coach Few's getting a heck of a,
02:35 granted he's got a ton of work,
02:37 scouting reports, running practices
02:39 alongside the rest of the staff,
02:41 but he's seeing the world.
02:42 I mean, they're gonna be in Manila, the Philippines,
02:46 Jakarta, they're gonna be,
02:48 or they've been at that, the great hotel.
02:51 I think it's the rate of the best hotel in the world,
02:54 Burj Al Khalifa, I wanna say it is.
02:56 His ability to see the world from an NBA perspective
03:04 is definitely being enhanced.
03:06 So I'm curious if it's gonna change
03:08 what Gonzaga's travel itinerary is looking like
03:12 if they're not gonna be set to stay at the Ritz-Carlton's
03:15 as opposed to maybe a Marriott.
03:16 There's nothing wrong with a Marriott,
03:18 but you never know, by being in those
03:22 unbelievable five-star resorts and places like that,
03:27 it's hard to wanna go back.
03:31 - When I heard you say change Gonzaga's travel itinerary,
03:34 I pictured that you were gonna have them flying
03:38 with St. Mary's to play in Manila or something like that.
03:41 And I got a kick out of just the thought of that.
03:44 Last question we had,
03:45 this one was one of the people wrote in on Twitter
03:47 asking, "When are you gonna start having coaches
03:49 "back on the show from around the WCC?"
03:52 - Oh, hopefully soon.
03:54 That's part of the thought and process
03:56 once we get back into fall.
03:58 We had a few coaches on early summer,
04:02 and then things got so unbelievably busy for them
04:05 in regards to recruiting calendars
04:09 and lining schedules up for many coaches were difficult.
04:12 But each coach that I've reached out to
04:14 in the early, late spring, early summer,
04:18 we're excited to be on, they made time.
04:21 And I think we'll be starting that up in the near future.
04:24 'Cause again, yes, this is Gonzaga-centric
04:28 and most people love the insight on Gonzaga,
04:30 but to get the full picture of Gonzaga and the WCC,
04:34 it's great to have a viewpoint and an idea
04:37 of what these other schools or programs are doing.
04:39 Because I think, we've talked about it
04:41 over the last couple of years,
04:42 the WCC continues to elevate
04:45 and there's some darn good programs in this league,
04:48 especially when you look at two years ago,
04:49 three teams were in the tournament.
04:50 St. Mary's should be ranked in the top 25
04:53 to start the season again this year.
04:56 There's a lot of good teams
04:57 and a lot of great coaches in this league.
04:59 - Absolutely love it.
